Using a nonequilibrium implementation of the extended dynamical mean field theory (EDMFT) we simulate the relaxation after photo excitation in a strongly correlated electron system with antiferromagnetic spin interactions. We consider the $t$-$J$ model and focus on the interplay between the charge- and spin-dynamics in different excitation and doping regimes. The appearance of string states after a weak photo excitation manifests itself in a nontrivial scaling of the relaxation time with the exchange coupling and leads to a correlated oscillatory evolution of the kinetic energy and spin-spin correlation function. A strong excitation of the system, on the other hand, suppresses the spin correlations and results in a relaxation that is controlled by hole scattering. We discuss the possibility of detecting string states in optical and cold atom experiments.

The excitonic insulator is an intriguing correlated electron phase formed of condensed excitons. A promising candidate is the small band gap semiconductor Ta2NiSe5. Here we investigate the quasiparticle and coherent phonon dynamics in Ta2NiSe5 in a t ime resolved pump probe experiment. Using the models originally developed by Kabanov et al. for superconductors, we show that the materials intrinsic gap can be described as almost temperature independent for temperatures up to about 250 K to 275 K. This behavior supports the existence of the excitonic insulator state in Ta2NiSe5. The onset of an additional temperature dependent component to the gap above these temperatures suggests that the material is located in the BEC-BCS crossover regime. Furthermore, we show that this state is very stable against strong photoexcitation, which reveals that the free charge carriers are unable to effectively screen the attractive Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes, likely due to the quasi one-dimensional structure of Ta2NiSe5.
We discuss photogenerated midgap states of a one-dimensional (1D) dimerized Mott insulator, potassium-tetracyanoquinodimethane (K-TCNQ). Two types of phonon modes are taken into account: intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. We treat these ph onon modes adiabatically and analyze a theoretical model by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our numerical results demonstrate that the intermolecular lattice distortion is necessary to reproduce the photoinduced midgap absorption in K-TCNQ. We find two types of midgap states. One is a usual polaronic state characterized by a localized elementary excitation. The other is superposition of two types of excitations, a doped-carrier state and a triplet-dimer state, which can be generally observed in 1D dimerized Mott insulators, not limited to K-TCNQ.

We investigate topological transport in a spin-orbit coupled bosonic Mott insulator. We show that interactions can lead to anomalous quasi-particle dynamics even when the spin-orbit coupling is abelian. To illustrate the latter, we consider the spin- orbit coupling realized in the experiment of Lin textit{et al}. [Nature (London) textbf{471}, 83 (2011)]. For this spin-orbit coupling, we compute the quasiparticle dispersions and spectral weights, the interaction-induced momentum space Berry curvature, and the momentum space distribution of spin density, and propose experimental signatures. Furthermore, we find that in our approximation for the single-particle propagator, the ground state can in principle support an integer Hall conductivity if the sum of the Chern numbers of the hole bands is nonzero.
The Mott insulator is the quintessential strongly correlated electronic state. We obtain complete insight into the physics of the two-dimensional Mott insulator by extending the slave-fermion (holon-doublon) description to finite temperatures. We fir st benchmark its predictions against state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating quantitative agreement. Qualitatively, the short-ranged spin fluctuations both induce holon-doublon bound states and renormalize the charge sector to form the Hubbard bands. The Mott gap is understood as the charge gap renormalized downwards by these spin fluctuations. As temperature increases, the Mott gap closes before the charge gap, causing a pseudogap regime to appear naturally during the melting of the Mott insulator.
Triangular lattice quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulators based on BEDT-TTF molecule and its analogies present the largest group of spin liquid candidates on triangular lattice. It was shown theoretically that spin liquid state in these materials can arize from a coupling to the fluctuating charge degree of freedom. In this work we discuss magnetic properties of one of such materials, $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl, which is known to be at the border of the phase transition from Mott insulator into a charge ordered state, and demonstrates charge order properties in the temperature range from 30 to 15~K. Our magnetic susceptibility and cantilever magnetisation measurements demonstrate an absence of spin order in this material down to 120~mK. We present arguments demonstrating that the charge order melting at low temperatures prevents ordering of spins.
