Large-area PhotoMultiplier Tubes (PMT) allow to efficiently instrument Liquid Scintillator (LS) neutrino detectors, where large target masses are pivotal to compensate for neutrinos extremely elusive nature. Depending on the detector light yield, several scintillation photons stemming from the same neutrino interaction are likely to hit a single PMT in a few tens/hundreds of nanoseconds, resulting in several photoelectrons (PEs) to pile-up at the PMT anode. In such scenario, the signal generated by each PE is entangled to the others, and an accurate PMT charge reconstruction becomes challenging. This manuscript describes an experimental method able to address the PMT charge reconstruction in the case of large PE pile-up, providing an unbiased charge estimator at the permille level up to 15 detected PEs. The method is based on a signal filtering technique (Wiener filter) which suppresses the noise due to both PMT and readout electronics, and on a Fourier-based deconvolution able to minimize the influence of signal distortions ---such as an overshoot. The analysis of simulated PMT waveforms shows that the slope of a linear regression modeling the relation between reconstructed and true charge values improves from $0.769 pm 0.001$ (without deconvolution) to $0.989 pm 0.001$ (with deconvolution), where unitary slope implies perfect reconstruction. A C++ implementation of the charge reconstruction algorithm is available online at http://www.fe.infn.it/CRA .

A novel approach is presented to unfold particle hit positions in tracking detectors with multiplexed readout representing an underdetermined system of linear equations. The method does not use any prior information about the hit positions, the only assumption in the procedure is that isolated hit signals generated on consecutive detector strips follow a smooth distribution. Ambiguities introduced by charge sharing from multiplexing are reduced by using a regularization technique. We have tested this method on a multiplexed 50x50 cm$^{2}$ Micromegas detector with 1037 strips and only 61 readout channels, using cosmic rays, and we have found that single and multiple clusters of hits can be reconstructed with high efficiency.
More target mass is required in current TPC based directional dark matter detectors for improved detector sensitivity. This can be achieved by scaling up the detector volumes, but this results in the need for more analogue signal channels. A possible solution to reducing the overall cost of the charge readout electronics is to multiplex the signal readout channels. Here, we present a multiplexer system in expanded mode based on LMH6574 chips produced by Texas Instruments, originally designed for video processing. The setup has a capability of reducing the number of readouts in such TPC detectors by a factor of 20. Results indicate that the important charge distribution asymmetry along an ionization track is retained after multiplexed signals are demultiplexed.

We review latest progress in gaseous photomultipliers (GPM) combining solid photocathodes and various types of novel electron multipliers. Cascaded gaseous electron multipliers (GEM) coated with CsI photocathodes can efficiently replace UVsensitive w ire chambers for single-photon recording in Cherenkov and other detectors. Other hole-multipliers with patterned electrodes (Micro-Hole and Strip Plates) and improved ion-blocking properties are discussed; these permit reducing considerably photon- and ion-induced secondary effects. Photon detectors with other electron-multiplier techniques are briefly described, among them GPMs based on Micromegas, capillary-plates, Thick-GEMs and resistive Thick GEMs. The two latter techniques, robust and economically produced, are particularly suited for large-area GPM applications, e.g. in RICH. Cascaded hole-multipliers with very high ion-blocking performance permitted the development and the first demonstration of DC-operated visible-sensitive gaseous photomultipliers with bialkali photocathodes and single-photon sensitivity. Recent progress is described in GPMs operated at cryogenic temperatures for rare-event noble-liquid detectors and medical imaging.
The next generation of proton decay and neutrino experiments, the post-SuperKamiokande detectors as those that will take place in megaton size water tanks, will require very large surfaces of photodetection and a large volume of data. Even with large hemispherical photomultiplier tubes, the expected number of channels should reach hundreds of thousands. A funded R&D program to implement a solution is presented here. The very large surface of photodetection is segmented in macro pixels made of 16 hemispherical (12 inches) photomultiplier tubes connected to an autonomous front-end which works on a triggerless data acquisition mode. The expected data transmission rate is 5 Mb/s per cable, which can be achieved with existing techniques. This architecture allows to reduce considerably the cost and facilitate the industrialization. This document presents the simulations and measurements which define the requirements for the photomultipliers and the electronics. A proto-type of front-end electronics was successfully tested with 16 photomultiplier tubes supplied by a single high voltage, validating the built-in gain adjustment and the calibration principle. The first tests and calculations on the photomultiplier glass led to the study of a new package optimized for a 10 bar pressure in order to sustain the high underwater pressure.
We report on studies of non-toxic scintillating liquid useful for large surface detectors. Arrays of liquid scintillators offer a rather simple tool for detecting charged particles traversing a surface and tracking their path through a defined volume . Insertion of wavelength shifting fibres along the liquid scintillating containers significantly improves the light collection at the two ends of the scintillators. We have demonstrated that we can achieve timing resolution of O(1 ns) allowing good spatial resolution. Liquid scintillators with fibres read by Photo-multipliers or SiPMs provide an inexpensive alternative technology which suits well the requirement of the MATHUSLA experiment tracking system.
