We are interested in the phenomenon of the essential spectrum instability for a class of unbounded (block) Jacobi matrices. We give a series of sufficient conditions for the matrices from certain classes to have a discrete spectrum on a half-axis of a real line. An extensive list of examples showing the sharpness of obtained results is provided.

We consider the family of $3 times 3$ operator matrices $H(K),$ $K in {Bbb T}^{rm d}:=(-pi; pi]^{rm d}$ arising in the spectral analysis of the energy operator of the spin-boson model of radioactive decay with two bosons on the torus ${Bbb T}^{rm d}. $ We obtain an analogue of the Faddeev equation for the eigenfunctions of $H(K)$. An analytic description of the essential spectrum of $H(K)$ is established. Further, it is shown that the essential spectrum of $H(K)$ consists the union of at most three bounded closed intervals.

The spectral problem for matrices with a block-hierarchical structure is often considered in context of the theory of complex systems. In the present article, a new class of matrices with a block-rectangular non-symmetric hierarchical structure is in troduced and the corresponding spectral problem is investigated. Using these results we study a model of error generation in information sequence where such block-rectangular hierarchical matrices appear in a natural way.
For a two-parameter family of Jacobi matrices exhibiting first-order spectral phase transitions, we prove discreteness of the spectrum in the positive real axis when the parameters are in one of the transition boundaries. To this end we develop a met hod for obtaining uniform asymptotics, with respect to the spectral parameter, of the generalized eigenvectors. Our technique can be applied to a wide range of Jacobi matrices.
We investigate the exact relation existing between the stability equation for the solutions of a mechanical system and the geodesic deviation equation of the associated geodesic problem in the Jacobi metric constructed via the Maupertuis-Jacobi Princ iple. We conclude that the dynamical and geometrical approaches to the stability/instability problem are not equivalent.
We continue studying the connection between Jacobi matrices defined on a tree and multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOPs) that was discovered previously by the authors. In this paper, we consider Angelesco systems formed by two analytic weights and ob tain asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients and strong asymptotics of MOPs along all directions (including the marginal ones). These results are then applied to show that the essential spectrum of the related Jacobi matrix is the union of intervals of orthogonality.
