Typical device architectures in polymer-based optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors organic light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells include sub-100 nm semiconducting polymer thin-film active layers, whose microstructure is likely to be subject to finite-size effects. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of the two-dimensional spatial confinement on the internal structure of the semiconducting polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). PFO melts were confined inside the cylindrical nanopores of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates and crystallized via two crystallization strategies, namely, in the presence or in the absence of a surface bulk reservoir located at the template surface. We show that highly textured semiconducting nanowires with tuneable crystal orientation can be thus produced. Moreover, our results indicate that employing the appropriate crystallization conditions extended-chain crystals can be formed in confinement. The results presented here demonstrate the simple fabrication and crystal engineering of ordered arrays of PFO nanowires; a system with potential applications in devices where anisotropic optical properties are required, such as polarized electroluminescence, waveguiding, optical switching, lasing, etc.

Comparison between single- and the poly-crystalline structures provides essential information on the role of long-range translational symmetry and grain boundaries. In particular, by comparing single- and poly-crystalline transition metal oxides (TMO s), one can study intriguing physical phenomena such as electronic and ionic conduction at the grain boundaries, phonon propagation, and various domain properties. In order to make an accurate comparison, however, both single- and poly-crystalline samples should have the same quality, e.g., stoichiometry, crystallinity, thickness, etc. Here, by studying the surface properties of atomically flat poly-crystalline SrTiO3 (STO), we propose an approach to simultaneously fabricate both single- and poly-crystalline epitaxial TMO thin films on STO substrates. In order to grow TMOs epitaxially with atomic precision, an atomically flat, single-terminated surface of the substrate is a prerequisite. We first examined (100), (110), and (111) oriented single-crystalline STO surfaces, which required different annealing conditions to achieve atomically flat surfaces, depending on the surface energy. A poly-crystalline STO surface was then prepared at the optimum condition for which all the domains with different crystallographic orientations could be successfully flattened. Based on our atomically flat poly-crystalline STO substrates, we envision expansion of the studies regarding theTMOdomains and grain boundaries.
There has been growing interest in structural quantum phase transitions and quantum fluctuations of phonons in the research area of condensed matter physics. Here, we report the observation of glass-like features in the lattice heat capacity of a stu ffed tridymite-type crystal, Ba1-xSrxAl2O4, a candidate compound of quantum paraelectrics. Substitutional chemical suppression of the ferroelectric phase transition temperature (TC) of Ba1-xSrxAl2O4 results in the disappearance of the TC at x=0.07. For the compositional window of x=0.2-0.5, the lattice heat capacity is enhanced below approximately 10 K and diverges from the T3-scaling law below 2.5 K. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments on single crystals reveal the weakly correlated disorder in the crystal structure that survives down to low temperature; this disorder is responsible for the observed excess heat capacity. These features can be considered one of the manifestations of structural quantum fluctuations.
Polymeric methyltrioxorhenium (poly-MTO) is the first member of a new class of organometallic hybrids which adopts the structural motives and physical properties of classical perowskites in two dimensions. In this study we demonstrate how the electro nic structure of poly-MTO can be tailored by intercalation of organic donor molecules such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). With increasing donor intercalation the metallic behavior of the parent compound, (CH$_{3}$)$_{0.92}$ReO$_{3} cdot x%$ TTF ($x = 0$) becomes suppressed leading to an insulator at donor concentrations $x$ larger than 50. Specific heat, electric resistance and magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that an increasing amount of TTF causes the itinerant electrons of the poly-MTO matrix to localize.

Ionic layer epitaxy (ILE) has recently been developed as an effective strategy to synthesize nanometer-thick 2D materials with a non-layered crystal structure, such as ZnO. The packing density of the amphiphilic monolayer is believed to be a key para meter that controls the nanosheet nucleation and growth. In this work, we systematically investigated the growth behavior of single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets templated at the water-air interface by an anionic oleylsulfate monolayer with different packing densities. The thicknesses of ZnO nanosheets were tuned from one unit cell to four unit cells, and exhibited good correlation with the width of Zn2+ ion concentration zone (the Stern layer) underneath the ionized surfactant monolayer. Further analysis of the nanosheet sizes and density revealed that the nanosheet growth was dominated by the steric hindrance from the surfactant monolayer at lower surface pressure; while the nucleation density became the dominating factor at higher surface pressure. The ZnO nanosheets exhibited a decreasing work function as the thickness reduced to a few unit cells. This research validated a critical hypothesis that the nanosheet growth is self-limited by the formation of a double layer of ionic precursors. This work will open up a new way towards controlled synthesis of novel 2D nanosheets from non-layered materials with a thickness down to one unit cell.
We show that it is possible to prepare and identify ultra--thin sheets of graphene on crystalline substrates such as SrTiO$_3$, TiO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$ and CaF$_2$ by standard techniques (mechanical exfoliation, optical and atomic force microscopy). On the substrates under consideration we find a similar distribution of single, bi- and few layer graphene and graphite flakes as with conventional SiO$_2$ substrates. The optical contrast $C$ of a single graphene layer on any of those substrates is determined by calculating the optical properties of a two-dimensional metallic sheet on the surface of a dielectric, which yields values between $C=$ ~- 1.5% (G/TiO$_2$) and $C=$ ~- 8.8% (G/CaF$_2$). This contrast is in reasonable agreement with experimental data and is sufficient to make identification by an optical microscope possible. The graphene layers cover the crystalline substrate in a carpet-like mode and the height of single layer graphene on any of the crystalline substrates as determined by atomic force microscopy is $d_{SLG}=0.34$ nm and thus much smaller than on SiO$_2$.
