Stardust grains recovered from meteorites provide high-precision snapshots of the isotopic composition of the stellar environment in which they formed. Attributing their origin to specific types of stars, however, often proves difficult. Intermediate-mass stars of 4-8 solar masses are expected to contribute a large fraction of meteoritic stardust. However, no grains have been found with characteristic isotopic compositions expected from such stars. This is a long-standing puzzle, which points to serious gaps in our understanding of the lifecycle of stars and dust in our Galaxy. Here we show that the increased proton-capture rate of $^{17}$O reported by a recent underground experiment leads to $^{17}$O/$^{16}$O isotopic ratios that match those observed in a population of stardust grains, for proton-burning temperatures of 60-80 million K. These temperatures are indeed achieved at the base of the convective envelope during the late evolution of intermediate-mass stars of 4-8 solar masses, which reveals them as the most likely site of origin of the grains. This result provides the first direct evidence that these stars contributed to the dust inventory from which the Solar System formed.

Stardust grains that originated in ancient stars and supernovae are recovered from meteorites and carry the detailed composition of their astronomical sites of origin. We present evidence that the majority of large ($mu$m-sized) meteoritic silicon ca rbide (SiC) grains formed in C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that were more metal-rich than the Sun. In the framework of the slow neutron-captures (the s process) that occurs in AGB stars the lower-than-solar 88Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios measured in the large SiC grains can only be accompanied by Ce/Y elemental ratios that are also lower than solar, and predominately observed in metal-rich barium stars - the binary companions of AGB stars. Such an origin suggests that these large grains represent the material from high-metallicity AGB stars needed to explain the s-process nucleosynthesis variations observed in bulk meteorites (Ek et al. 2020). In the outflows of metal-rich, C-rich AGB stars SiC grains are predicted to be small ($simeq$ 0.2 $mu$m-sized); large ($simeq$ $mu$m-sized) SiC grains can grow if the number of dust seeds is two to three orders of magnitude lower than the standard value of $10^{-13}$ times the number of H atoms. We therefore predict that with increasing metallicity the number of dust seeds might decrease, resulting in the production of larger SiC grains.
Context. Material processed by the CNO cycle in stellar interiors is enriched in 17O. When mixing processes from the stellar surface reach these layers, as occurs when stars become red giants and undergo the first dredge up, the abundance of 17O incr eases. Such an occurrence explains the drop of the 16O/17O observed in RGB stars with mass larger than 1.5 M_solar. As a consequence, the interstellar medium is continuously polluted by the wind of evolved stars enriched in 17O . Aims. Recently, the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) collaboration released an improved rate of the 17O(p,alpha)14N reaction. In this paper we discuss the impact that the revised rate has on the 16O/17O ratio at the stellar surface and on 17O stellar yields. Methods. We computed stellar models of initial mass between 1 and 20 M_solar and compared the results obtained by adopting the revised rate of the 17O(p,alpha)14N to those obtained using previous rates. Results. The post-first dredge up 16O/17O ratios are about 20% larger than previously obtained. Negligible variations are found in the case of the second and the third dredge up. In spite of the larger 17O(p,alpha)14N rate, we confirm previous claims that an extra-mixing process on the red giant branch, commonly invoked to explain the low carbon isotopic ratio observed in bright low-mass giant stars, marginally affects the 16O/17O ratio. Possible effects on AGB extra-mixing episodes are also discussed. As a whole, a substantial reduction of 17O stellar yields is found. In particular, the net yield of stars with mass ranging between 2 and 20 M_solar is 15 to 40% smaller than previously estimated. Conclusions. The revision of the 17O(p,alpha)14N rate has a major impact on the interpretation of the 16O/17O observed in evolved giants, in stardust grains and on the 17O stellar yields.
The electron-capture rate on $^7$Be is the main production channel for $^7$Li in several astrophysical environments. Theoretical evaluations have to account for not only the nuclear interaction, but also the processes in the plasma where $^7$Be ions and electrons interact. In the past decades several estimates were presented, pointing out that the theoretical uncertainty in the rate is in general of few percents. In the framework of fundamental solar physics, we consider here a recent evaluation for the $^7$Be+e$^-$ rate, not used up to now in the estimate of neutrino fluxes. We analysed the effects of the new assumptions on Standard Solar Models (SSMs) and compared the results obtained by adopting the revised $^7$Be+e$^-$ rate to those obtained by the one reported in a widely used compilation of reaction rates (ADE11). We found that new SSMs yield a maximum difference in the efficiency of the $^7$Be channel of about -4% with respect to what is obtained with the previously adopted rate. This fact affects the production of neutrinos from $^8$B, increasing the relative flux up to a maximum of 2.7%. Negligible variations are found for the physical and chemical properties of the computed solar models. The agreement with the SNO measurements of the neutral current component of the $^8$B neutrino flux is improved.

We present homogeneous abundances for Fe and some of the elements involved in the proton-capture reactions (O, Na, Mg, Al, and Si) for 202 red giants in 17 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) from the analysis of high resolution UVES spectra obtained wi th FLAMES@ESO-VLT2. Our programme clusters span almost the whole range in metallicity of GCs and were selected to sample the widest range of global parameters (HB morphology, masses, concentration, etc). Here we focus on the discussion of the Na-O and Mg-Al anticorrelations and related issues. Our study finds clear Na and O star-to-star abundance variations in all GCs. Variations in Al are present in all but a few GCs. Finally, a spread in abundances of Mg and Si are also present in a few clusters. Mg is slightly less overabundant and Si slightly more overabundant in the most Al-rich stars. The correlation between Si and Al abundances is a signature of production of 28Si leaking from the Mg-Al cycle in a few clusters. The cross sections required for the proper reactions to take over in the cycle point to temperatures in excess of about 65 MK for the favoured site of production. We used a dilution model to infer the total range of Al abundances starting from the Al abundances in the UVES spectra, and the Na abundance distributions found from analysis of the much larger set of stars for which GIRAFFE spectra were available. We found that the maximum amount of additional Al produced by first generation polluters contributing to the composition of the second generation stars in each cluster is closely correlated with the same combination of metallicity and cluster luminosity that reproduced the minimum O abundances found from GIRAFFE spectra. We then suggest that the high temperatures required for the Mg-Al cycle are only reached in the most massive and most metal-poor polluters.
Still today, the nucleosynthesis origin of Xe-H in presolar nanodiamonds is far from understood. Historically, possible explanations were proposed by a secondary neutron-burst process occurring in the He- or C/O-shells of a type-II supernova (SN-II), which are, however, not fully convincing in terms of modern nucleosynthesis conditions. Therefore, we have investigated Xe isotopic abundance features that may be diagnostic for differe
