Answering a question asked by Agol and Wise, we show that a desired stronger form of Wises malnormal special quotient theorem does not hold. The counterexamples are generalizations of triangle groups, built using the Ramanujan graphs constructed by Lubotzky--Phillips--Sarnak.

A generalized Baumslag-Solitar group is the fundamental group of a graph of groups all of whose vertex and edge groups are infinite cyclic. Levitt proves that any generalized Baumslag-Solitar group has property R-infinity, that is, any automorphism h as an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. We show that any group quasi-isometric to a generalized Baumslag-Solitar group also has property R-infinity. This extends work of the authors proving that any group quasi-isometric to a solvable Baumslag-Solitar BS(1,n) group has property R-infinity, and relies on the classification of generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups given by Whyte.
We construct several series of explicit presentations of infinite hyperbolic groups enjoying Kazhdans property (T). Some of them are significantly shorter than the previously known shortest examples. Moreover, we show that some of those hyperbolic Ka zhdan groups possess finite simple quotient groups of arbitrarily large rank; they constitute the first known specimens combining those properties. All the hyperbolic groups we consider are non-positively curved k-fold generalized triangle groups, i.e. groups that possess a simplicial action on a CAT(0) triangle complex, which is sharply transitive on the set of triangles, and such that edge-stabilizers are cyclic of order k.

We prove that the conjugacy problem in right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs), as well as in a large and natural class of subgroups of RAAGs, can be solved in linear-time. This class of subgroups contains, for instance, all graph braid groups (i.e. fundam ental groups of configuration spaces of points in graphs), many hyperbolic groups, and it coincides with the class of fundamental groups of ``special cube complexes studied independently by Haglund and Wise.
We say that a group has property $R_{infty}$ if any group automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. Felshtyn and Goncalves prove that the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(1,m) have property $R_{infty}$. We define a solvable generalization $Gamma(S)$ of these groups which we show to have property $R_{infty}$. We then show that property $R_{infty}$ is geometric for these groups, that is, any group quasi-isometric to $Gamma(S)$ has property $R_{infty}$ as well.
We construct a Teichmueller curve uniformized by the Fuchsian triangle group (m,n,infty) for every m<n. Our construction includes the Teichmueller curves constructed by Veech and Ward as special cases. The construction essentially relies on propertie s of hypergeometric differential operators. For small m, we find Billiard tables that generate these Teichmueller curves. We interprete some of the so-called Lyapunov exponents of the Kontsevich--Zorich cocycle as normalized degrees of some natural line bundles on a Teichmueller curves. We determine the Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmueller curves we construct.
