We report on the experimental implementation of a spin pump with ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical superlattice. In the limit of isolated double wells it represents a 1D dynamical version of the quantum spin Hall effect. Starting from an antiferromagnetically ordered spin chain, we periodically vary the underlying spin-dependent Hamiltonian and observe a spin current without charge transport. We demonstrate a novel detection method to measure spin currents in optical lattices via superexchange oscillations emerging after a projection onto static double wells. Furthermore, we directly verify spin transport through in-situ measurements of the spins center of mass displacement.

We examine spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in optical superlattices theoretically using a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian that takes spin effects into account. Assuming that a small number of spin-1 bosons is loaded in an optical potential, we study single -particle tunneling that occurs when one lattice site is ramped up relative to a neighboring site. Spin-dependent effects modify the tunneling events in a qualitative and quantitative way. Depending on the asymmetry of the double well different types of magnetic order occur, making the system of spin-1 bosons in an optical superlattice a model for mesoscopic magnetism. We use a double-well potential as a unit cell for a one-dimensional superlattice. Homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic fields are applied and the effects of the linear and the quadratic Zeeman shifts are examined. We also investigate the bipartite entanglement between the sites and construct states of maximal entanglement. The entanglement in our system is due to both orbital and spin degrees of freedom. We calculate the contribution of orbital and spin entanglement and show that the sum of these two terms gives a lower bound for the total entanglement.
A general definition of the Spintronics concept of spin-pumping is proposed as generalized forces conjugated to the spin degrees of freedom in the framework of the theory of mesoscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamics. It is shown that at least three d ifferent kinds of spin-pumping forces and associated spin-currents can be defined in the most simple spintronics system (the Ferromagnetic/Non-Ferromagnetic metal interface). Furthermore, the generalized force associated to the ferromagnetic collective variable is also introduced in an equal footing, in order to describe the coexistence of the spin of the conduction electrons (paramagnetic spins attached to $s$-band electrons) and the ferromagnetic-order parameter. The dynamical coupling between these two kinds of magnetic degrees of freedom is presented, and interpreted in terms of spin-transfer effects.

Dirac-Weyl fermions are massless relativistic particles with a well-defined helicity which arise in the context of high-energy physics. Here we propose a quantum simulation of these paradigmatic fermions using multicomponent ultracold atoms in a two- dimensional square optical lattice. We find that laser-assisted spin-dependent hopping, specifically tuned to the $(2s+1)$-dimensional representations of the $mathfrak{su}$(2) Lie algebra, directly leads to a regime where the emerging massless excitations correspond to Dirac-Weyl fermions with arbitrary pseudospin $s$. We show that this platform hosts two different phases: a semimetallic phase that occurs for half-integer $s$, and a metallic phase that contains a flat zero-energy band at integer $s$. These phases host a variety of interesting effects, such as a very rich anomalous quantum Hall effect and a remarkable multirefringent Klein tunneling. In addition we show that these effects are directly related to the number of underlying Dirac-Weyl species and zero modes.
Topological pumping of ultracold atomic gases has recently been demonstrated in two experiments (Nat. Phys. 12, 296; 12, 350 (2016)). Here we study the topological pumping of a single magnon in a dynamically controlled spin-dependent optical superlat tice. When the interaction between atoms is strong, this system supports a dynamical version of topological magnon insulator phase. By initially putting a single magnon in the superlattice and slowly varying the dynamical controlled parameter over one period, the shift of the magnon density center is quantized and equal to the topological Chern number. Moreover, we also find that the direction of this quantized shift is entanglement-dependent. Our result provides a route for realizing topological pumping of quasiparticles in strongly correlated ultracold atomic system and for studying the interplay between topological pumping and quantum entanglement.
Quantum gas microscopy has emerged as a powerful new way to probe quantum many-body systems at the microscopic level. However, layered or efficient spin-resolved readout methods have remained scarce as they impose strong demands on the specific atomi c species and constrain the simulated lattice geometry and size. Here we present a novel high-fidelity bilayer readout, which can be used for full spin- and density-resolved quantum gas microscopy of two-dimensional systems with arbitrary geometry. Our technique makes use of an initial Stern-Gerlach splitting into adjacent layers of a highly-stable vertical superlattice and subsequent charge pumping to separate the layers by $21,mu$m. This separation enables independent high-resolution images of each layer. We benchmark our method by spin- and density-resolving two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard systems. Our technique furthermore enables the access to advanced entropy engineering schemes, spectroscopic methods or the realization of tunable bilayer systems.
