This work considers a super-resolution framework for overcomplete tensor decomposition. Specifically, we view tensor decomposition as a super-resolution problem of recovering a sum of Dirac measures on the sphere and solve it by minimizing a continuous analog of the $ell_1$ norm on the space of measures. The optimal value of this optimization defines the tensor nuclear norm. Similar to the separation condition in the super-resolution problem, by explicitly constructing a dual certificate, we develop incoherence conditions of the tensor factors so that they form the unique optimal solution of the continuous analog of $ell_1$ norm minimization. Remarkably, the derived incoherence conditions are satisfied with high probability by random tensor factors uniformly distributed on the sphere, implying global identifiability of random tensor factors.

In a variety of fields, in particular those involving imaging and optics, we often measure signals whose phase is missing or has been irremediably distorted. Phase retrieval attempts to recover the phase information of a signal from the magnitude of its Fourier transform to enable the reconstruction of the original signal. Solving the phase retrieval problem is equivalent to recovering a signal from its auto-correlation function. In this paper, we assume the original signal to be sparse; this is a natural assumption in many applications, such as X-ray crystallography, speckle imaging and blind channel estimation. We propose an algorithm that resolves the phase retrieval problem in three stages: i) we leverage the finite rate of innovation sampling theory to super-resolve the auto-correlation function from a limited number of samples, ii) we design a greedy algorithm that identifies the locations of a sparse solution given the super-resolved auto-correlation function, iii) we recover the amplitudes of the atoms given their locations and the measured auto-correlation function. Unlike traditional approaches that recover a discrete approximation of the underlying signal, our algorithm estimates the signal on a continuous domain, which makes it the first of its kind. Along with the algorithm, we derive its performance bound with a theoretical analysis and propose a set of enhancements to improve its computational complexity and noise resilience. Finally, we demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method via a comparison against Charge Flipping, a notable algorithm in crystallography.
We consider the problem of resolving $ r$ point sources from $n$ samples at the low end of the spectrum when point spread functions (PSFs) are not known. Assuming that the spectrum samples of the PSFs lie in low dimensional subspace (let $s$ denote t he dimension), this problem can be reformulated as a matrix recovery problem, followed by location estimation. By exploiting the low rank structure of the vectorized Hankel matrix associated with the target matrix, a convex approach called Vectorized Hankel Lift is proposed for the matrix recovery. It is shown that $ngtrsim rslog^4 n$ samples are sufficient for Vectorized Hankel Lift to achieve the exact recovery. For the location retrieval from the matrix, applying the single snapshot MUSIC method within the vectorized Hankel lift framework corresponds to the spatial smoothing technique proposed to improve the performance of the MMV MUSIC for the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation.
In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) joint transmit array interpolation and beamspace design for planar array mono-static multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation via tensor modeling. Our under lying idea is to map the transmit array to a desired array and suppress the transmit power outside the spatial sector of interest. In doing so, the signal-tonoise ratio is improved at the receive array. Then, we fold the received data along each dimension into a tensorial structure and apply tensor-based methods to obtain DOA estimates. In addition, we derive a close-form expression for DOA estimation bias caused by interpolation errors and argue for using a specially designed look-up table to compensate the bias. The corresponding Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) is also derived. Simulation results are provided to show the performance of the proposed method and compare its performance to CRB.
Designing decentralized policies for wireless communication networks is a crucial problem, which has only been partially solved in the literature so far. In this paper, we propose the Decentralized Markov Decision Process (Dec-MDP) framework to analy ze a wireless sensor network with multiple users which access a common wireless channel. We consider devices with energy harvesting capabilities, so that they aim at balancing the energy arrivals with the data departures and with the probability of colliding with other nodes. Randomly over time, an access point triggers a SYNC slot, wherein it recomputes the optimal transmission parameters of the whole network, and distributes this information. Every node receives its own policy, which specifies how it should access the channel in the future, and, thereafter, proceeds in a fully decentralized fashion, without interacting with other entities in the network. We propose a multi-layer Markov model, where an external MDP manages the jumps between SYNC slots, and an internal Dec-MDP computes the optimal policy in the near future. We numerically show that, because of the harvesting, a fully orthogonal scheme (e.g., TDMA-like) is suboptimal in energy harvesting scenarios, and the optimal trade-off lies between an orthogonal and a random access system.
A rate-distortion problem motivated by the consideration of semantic information is formulated and solved. The starting point is to model an information source as a pair consisting of an intrinsic state which is not observable, corresponding to the s emantic aspect of the source, and an extrinsic observation which is subject to lossy source coding. The proposed rate-distortion problem seeks a description of the information source, via encoding the extrinsic observation, under two distortion constraints, one for the intrinsic state and the other for the extrinsic observation. The corresponding state-observation rate-distortion function is obtained, and a few case studies of Gaussian intrinsic state estimation and binary intrinsic state classification are studied.
