Underwater wireless optical communications is an emerging solution to the expanding demand for broadband links in oceans and seas. In this paper, a cellular underwater wireless optical code division multiple-access (UW-OCDMA) network is proposed to provide broadband links for commercial and military applications. The optical orthogonal codes (OOC) are employed as signature codes of underwater mobile users. Fundamental key aspects of the network such as its backhaul architecture, its potential applications and its design challenges are presented. In particular, the proposed network is used as infrastructure of centralized, decentralized and relay-assisted underwater sensor networks for high-speed real-time monitoring. Furthermore, a promising underwater localization and positioning scheme based on this cellular network is presented. Finally, probable design challenges such as cell edge coverage, blockage avoidance, power control and increasing the network capacity are addressed.

With the seamless coverage of wireless cellular networks in modern society, it is interesting to consider the shape of wireless cellular coverage. Is the shape a regular hexagon, an irregular polygon, or another complex geometrical shape? Based on fr actal theory, the statistical characteristic of the wireless cellular coverage boundary is determined by the measured wireless cellular data collected from Shanghai, China. The measured results indicate that the wireless cellular coverage boundary presents an extremely irregular geometrical shape, which is also called a statistical fractal shape. Moreover, the statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary have been validated by values of the Hurst parameter estimated in angular scales. The statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary can be used to evaluate and design the handoff scheme of mobile user terminals in wireless cellular networks.

Enabling high-rate, low-latency and ultra-reliable wireless communications between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their associated ground pilots/users is of paramount importance to realize their large-scale usage in the future. To achieve this g oal, cellular-connected UAV, whereby UAVs for various applications are integrated into the cellular network as new aerial users, is a promising technology that has drawn significant attention recently. Compared to the conventional cellular communication with terrestrial users, cellular-connected UAV communication possesses substantially different characteristics that bring in new research challenges as well as opportunities. In this article, we provide an overview of this emerging technology, by firstly discussing its potential benefits, unique communication and spectrum requirements, as well as new design considerations. We then introduce promising technologies to enable the future generation of three-dimensional (3D) heterogeneous wireless networks with coexisting aerial and ground users. Last, we present simulation results to corroborate our discussions and highlight key directions for future research.
Cellular-connected wireless connectivity provides new opportunities for virtual reality(VR) to offer seamless user experience from anywhere at anytime. To realize this vision, the quality-of-service (QoS) for wireless VR needs to be carefully defined to reflect human perception requirements. In this paper, we first identify the primary drivers of VR systems, in terms of applications and use cases. We then map the human perception requirements to corresponding QoS requirements for four phases of VR technology development. To shed light on how to provide short/long-range mobility for VR services, we further list four main use cases for cellular-connected wireless VR and identify their unique research challenges along with their corresponding enabling technologies and solutions in 5G systems and beyond. Last but not least, we present a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution and the unique QoS performance requirements of VR transmission compared with that of traditional video service in cellular networks.
A plethora of demanding services and use cases mandate a revolutionary shift in the management of future wireless network resources. Indeed, when tight quality of service demands of applications are combined with increased complexity of the network, legacy network management routines will become unfeasible in 6G. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a fundamental enabler to orchestrate the network resources from bottom to top. AI-enabled radio access and AI-enabled core will open up new opportunities for automated configuration of 6G. On the other hand, there are many challenges in AI-enabled networks that need to be addressed. Long convergence time, memory complexity, and complex behaviour of machine learning algorithms under uncertainty as well as highly dynamic channel, traffic and mobility conditions of the network contribute to the challenges. In this paper, we survey the state-of-art research in utilizing machine learning techniques in improving the performance of wireless networks. In addition, we identify challenges and open issues to provide a roadmap for the researchers.
Smart grid, regarded as the next generation power grid, uses two-way flows of electricity and information to create a widely distributed automated energy delivery network. In this work we present our vision on smart grid from the perspective of wirel ess communications and networking technologies. We present wireless communication and networking paradigms for four typical scenarios in the future smart grid and also point out the research challenges of the wireless communication and networking technologies used in smart grid
