The double-averaging (DA) approximation is widely employed as the standard technique in studying the secular evolution of the hierarchical three-body system. We show that effects stemmed from the short-timescale oscillations ignored by DA can accumulate over long timescales and lead to significant errors in the long-term evolution of the Lidov-Kozai cycles. In particular, the conditions for having an orbital flip, where the inner orbit switches between prograde and retrograde with respect to the outer orbit and the associated extremely high eccentricities during the switch, can be modified significantly. The failure of DA can arise for a relatively strong perturber where the mass of the tertiary is considerable compared to the total mass of the inner binary. This issue can be relevant for astrophysical systems such as stellar triples, planets in stellar binaries, stellar-mass binaries orbiting massive black holes and moons of the planets perturbed by the Sun. We derive analytical equations for the short-term oscillations of the inner orbit to the leading order for all inclinations, eccentricities and mass ratios. Under the test particle approximation, we derive the corrected double-averaging (CDA) equations by incorporating the effects of short-term oscillations into the DA. By comparing to N-body integrations, we show that the CDA equations successfully correct most of the errors of the long-term evolution under the DA approximation for a large range of initial conditions. We provide an implementation of CDA that can be directly added to codes employing DA equations.

Kepler-78b is one of a growing sample of planets similar, in composition and size, to the Earth. It was first detected with NASAs emph{Kepler} spacecraft and then characterised in more detail using radial velocity follow-up observations. Not only is its size very similar to that of the Earth ($1.2 R_oplus$), it also has a very similar density ($5.6$ g cm$^{-2}$). What makes this planet particularly interesting is that it orbits its host star every $8.5$ hours, giving it an orbital distance of only $0.0089$ au. What we investigate here is whether or not such a planet could have been perturbed into this orbit by an outer companion on an inclined orbit. In this scenario, the outer perturber causes the inner orbit to undergo Kozai-Lidov cycles which, if the periapse comes sufficiently close to the host star, can then lead to the planet being tidally circularised into a close orbit. We find that this process can indeed produce such very-close-in planets within the age of the host star ($sim 600 - 900$ Myr), but it is more likely to find such ultra-short-period planets around slightly older stars ($> 1$ Gyr). However, given the size of the Kepler sample and the likely binarity, our results suggest that Kepler-78b may indeed have been perturbed into its current orbit by an outer stellar companion. The likelihood of this happening, however, is low enough that other processes - such as planet-planet scattering - could also be responsible.

A test particle in a noncoplanar orbit about a member of a binary system can undergo Kozai-Lidov oscillations in which tilt and eccentricity are exchanged. An initially circular highly inclined particle orbit can reach high eccentricity. We consider the nonlinear secular evolution equations previously obtained in the quadrupole approximation. For the important case that the initial eccentricity of the particle orbit is zero, we derive an analytic solution for the particle orbital elements as a function of time that is exact within the quadrupole approximation. The solution involves only simple trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. It simplifies in the case that the initial particle orbit is close to being perpendicular to the binary orbital plane. The solution also provides an accurate description of particle orbits with nonzero but sufficiently small initial eccentricity. It is accurate over a range of initial eccentricity that broadens at higher initial inclinations. In the case of an initial inclination of pi/3, an error of 1% at maximum eccentricity occurs for initial eccentricities of about 0.1.
We use three dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to show that a highly misaligned accretion disk around one component of a binary system can exhibit global Kozai-Lidov cycles, where the inclination and eccentricity of the disk are interchanged per iodically. This has important implications for accreting systems on all scales, for example, the formation of planets and satellites in circumstellar and circumplanetary disks, outbursts in X-ray binary systems and accretion on to supermassive black holes.
The so-called Lidov-Kozai oscillation is very well known and applied to various problems in solar system dynamics. This mechanism makes the orbital inclination and eccentricity of the perturbed body in the circular restricted three-body system oscill ate with a large amplitude under certain conditions. It is widely accepted that the theoretical framework of this phenomenon was established independently in the early 1960s by a Soviet Union dynamicist (Michail Lvovich Lidov) and by a Japanese celestial mechanist (Yoshihide Kozai). A large variety of studies has stemmed from the original works by Lidov and Kozai, now having the prefix of Lidov-Kozai or Kozai- Lidov. However, from a survey of past literature published in late nineteenth to early twentieth century, we have confirmed that there already existed a pioneering work using a similar analysis of this subject established in that period. This was accomplished by a Swedish astronomer, Edvard Hugo von Zeipel. In this monograph, we first outline the basic framework of the circular restricted three-body problem including typical examples where the Lidov-Kozai oscillation occurs. Then, we introduce what was discussed and learned along this line of studies from the early to mid-twentieth century by summarizing the major works of Lidov, Kozai, and relevant authors. Finally, we make a summary of von Zeipels work, and show that his achievements in the early twentieth century already comprehended most of the fundamental and necessary formulations that the Lidov-Kozai oscillation requires. By comparing the works of Lidov, Kozai, and von Zeipel, we assert that the prefix von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai should be used for designating this theoretical framework, and not just Lidov-Kozai or Kozai-Lidov.
The secular approximation of the hierarchical three body systems has been proven to be very useful in addressing many astrophysical systems, from planets, stars to black holes. In such a system two objects are on a tight orbit, and the tertiary is on a much wider orbit. Here we study the dynamics of a system by taking the tertiary mass to zero and solve the hierarchical three body system up to the octupole level of approximation. We find a rich dynamics that the outer orbit undergoes due to gravitational perturbations from the inner binary. The nominal result of the precession of the nodes is mostly limited for the lowest order of approximation, however, when the octupole-level of approximation is introduced the system becomes chaotic, as expected, and the tertiary oscillates below and above 90deg, similarly to the non-test particle flip behavior (e.g., Naoz 2016). We provide the Hamiltonian of the system and investigate the dynamics of the system from the quadrupole to the octupole level of approximations. We also analyze the chaotic and quasi-periodic orbital evolution by studying the surfaces of sections. Furthermore, including general relativity, we show case the long term evolution of individual debris disk particles under the influence of a far away interior eccentric planet. We show that this dynamics can naturally result in retrograde objects and a puffy disk after a long timescale evolution (few Gyr) for initially aligned configuration.
