The Galactic Ridge X-ray Emission (GRXE) spectrum has strong iron emission lines at 6.4, 6.7, and 7.0~keV, each corresponding to the neutral (or low-ionized), He-like, and H-like iron ions. The 6.4~keV fluorescence line is due to irradiation of neutral (or low ionized) material (iron) by hard X-ray sources, indicating uniform presence of the cold matter in the Galactic plane. In order to resolve origin of the cold fluorescent matter, we examined the contribution of the 6.4~keV line emission from white dwarf surfaces in the hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars (hSSs) and magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) to the GRXE. In our spectral analysis of 4~hSSs and 19~mCVs observed with Suzaku, we were able to resolve the three iron emission lines. We found that the equivalent-widths (EWs) of the 6.4~keV lines of hSSs are systematically higher than those of mCVs, such that the average EWs of hSSs and mCVs are $179_{-11}^{+46}$~eV and $93_{-3}^{+20}$~eV, respectively. The EW of hSSs compares favorably with the typical EWs of the 6.4~keV line in the GRXE of 90--300~eV depending on Galactic positions. Average 6.4~keV line luminosities of the hSSs and mCVs are $9.2times 10^{39}$ and $1.6times 10^{39}$~photons~s$^{-1}$, respectively, indicating that hSSs are intrinsically more efficient 6.4~keV line emitters than mCVs. We compare expected contribution of the 6.4 keV lines from mCVs with the observed GRXE 6.4 keV line flux in the direction of $(l,b) approx (28.5arcdeg, 0arcdeg$). We conclude that almost all the 6.4 keV line flux in GRXE may be explained by mCVs within current undertainties of the stellar number densities, while contribution from hSSs may not be negligible.

We present the result of a systematic search for the iron Kalpha fluorescent line at 6.4 keV among 1616 X-ray sources detected by ultra-deep Chandra observations of the Orion Nebula Cluster and the obscured Orion Molecular Cloud 1 population as part of the Chandra Orion Ultra-deep Project (COUP). Seven sources are identified to have an excess emission at 6.4 keV among 127 control sample sources with significant counts in the 6.0-9.0 keV band. These seven sources are young stellar objects (YSOs) characterized by intense flare-like flux variations, thermal spectra, and near-infrared (NIR) counterparts. The observed equivalent widths of the line cannot be attributed to the fluorescence by interstellar or circumstellar matter along the line of sight. The X-ray spectral fits and NIR colors of the 6.4 keV sources show that these sources have X-ray absorption of > 1x10^22 cm^(-2) and NIR excess emission, which is not expected when the fluorescence occurs at the stellar photosphere. We therefore conclude that the iron fluorescent line of YSOs arises from reflection off of circumstellar disks, which are irradiated by the hard X-ray continuum emission of magnetic reconnection flares.
We present here the preliminary results of the study of the fluorescent iron line emission from X-ray pulsars with Be companions. We propose to use properties of this emission to investigate the spatial distribution and physical conditions of the mat ter around the compact object as well as in the binary system as a whole. Using data of the RXTE observatory the iron line behavior in the transient X-ray pulsar V 0332+53 spectrum was studied during the powerful type II outburst in 2004-2005. Particularly, we investigated a variability of the iron line equivalent width on different time scales (pulse period, orbital period, outburst phase) and searched for its correlation with the continuum flux, spectral parameters, etc.
We present new, high signal-to-noise ratio results from a Monte Carlo study of the properties of the Compton shoulder of the Fe Kalpha emission line in the toroidal X-ray reprocessor model of Murphy & Yaqoob (2009, MNRAS, 397, 1549). The model compre hensively covers the Compton-thin to Compton-thick regimes and we find that the variety of Compton shoulder profiles is greater than that for both (centrally-illuminated) spherical and disk geometries. Our Monte Carlo simulations were done with a statistical accuracy that is high enough to reveal, for the case of an edge-on, Compton-thick torus, a new type of Compton shoulder that is not present in the spherical or disk geometries. Such a Compton shoulder is dominated by a narrow back-scattering feature at ~6.24 keV. Our results also reveal a dependence of the shape of the Compton shoulder (and its magnitude relative to the Fe Kalpha line core) on the spectral shape of the incident X-ray continuum. We also show the effects of velocity broadening on the Fe Kalpha line profile and find that if either the velocity width or instrument resolution is greater than a FWHM of ~2000 km/s, the Compton shoulder begins to become blended with the line core and the characteristic features of the Compton shoulder become harder to resolve. In particular, at a FWHM of ~7000 km/s the Compton shoulder is NOT resolved at all, its only signature being a weak asymmetry in the blended line profile. Thus, CCD X-ray detectors cannot unambiguously resolve the Compton shoulder. Our results are freely available in a format that is suitable for direct spectral-fitting of the continuum and line model to real data.
We report the discovery of a hard-thermal (T ~ 130 MK) and variable X-ray emission from the Be star HD 157832, a new member of the puzzling class of gamma-Cas-like Be/X-ray systems. Recent optical spectroscopy reveals the presence of a large/dense ci rcumstellar disc seen at intermediate/high inclination. With a B1.5V spectral type, HD 157832 is the coolest gamma-Cas analog known. In addition, its non detection in the ROSAT all-sky survey shows that its average soft X-ray luminosity varied by a factor larger than ~ 3 over a time interval of 14 yr. These two remarkable features, ``low effective temperature and likely high X-ray variability turn HD 157832 into a promising object for understanding the origin of the unusually high temperature X-ray emission in these systems.

We present new results from Monte Carlo calculations of the flux and equivalent width (EW) of the Ni Kalpha fluorescent emission line in the toroidal X-ray reprocessor model of Murphy & Yaqoob (2009, MNRAS, 397, 1549). In the Compton-thin regime, the EW of the Ni Kalpha line is a factor of ~22 less than that of the Fe Kalpha line but this factor can be as low as ~6 in the Compton-thick regime. We show that the optically-thin limit for this ratio depends only on the Fe to Ni abundance ratio, it being independent of the geometry and covering factor of the reprocessor, and also independent of the shape of the incident X-ray continuum. We give some useful analytic expressions for the absolute flux and the EW of the Ni Kalpha line in the optically-thin limit. When the reprocessor is Compton-thick and the incident continuum is a power-law with a photon index of 1.9, the Ni Kalpha line EW has a maximum value of ~3 eV and ~250 eV for non-intercepting and intercepting lines-of-sight respectively. Larger EWs are obtained for flatter continua. We have also studied the Compton shoulder of the Ni Ka line and find that the ratio of scattered to unscattered flux in the line has a maximum value of 0.26, less than the corresponding maximum for the Fe Kalpha line. However, we find that the shape of the Compton shoulder profile for a given column density and inclination angle of the torus is similar to the corresponding profile for the Fe Ka line. Our results will be useful for interpreting X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and X-ray binary systems in which the system parameters are favorable for the Ni Kalpha line to be detected.
