In this paper we give a Casimir Invariant for the Symmetric group $S_n$. Furthermore we obtain and present, for the first time in the literature, explicit formulas for the matrices of the standard representation in terms of the matrices of the permutation representation.
It is proved that the continuous bounded cohomology of SL_2(k) vanishes in all positive degrees whenever k is a non-Archimedean local field. This holds more generally for boundary-transitive groups of tree automorphisms and implies low degree vanishing for SL_2 over S-integers.
The commuting graph of a group G, denoted by Gamma(G), is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of G and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if they commute. Let Z_m be the commutative ring of equivalence
classes of integers modulo m. In this paper we investigate the connectivity and diameters of the commuting graphs of GL(n,Z_m) to contribute to the conjecture that there is a universal upper bound on diam(Gamma(G)) for any finite group G when Gamma(G) is connected. For any composite m, it is shown that Gamma(GL(n,Z_m)) and Gamma(M(n,Z_m)) are connected and diam(Gamma(GL(n,Z_m))) = diam(Gamma(M(n,Z_m))) = 3. For m a prime, the instances of connectedness and absolute bounds on the diameters of Gamma(GL(n,Z_m)) and Gamma(M(n,Z_m)) when they are connected are concluded from previous results.
Motivated by questions originating from the study of a class of shallow student-teacher neural networks, methods are developed for the analysis of spurious minima in classes of gradient equivariant dynamics related to neural nets. In the symmetric ca
se, methods depend on the generic equivariant bifurcation theory of irreducible representations of the symmetric group on $n$ symbols, $S_n$; in particular, the standard representation of $S_n$. It is shown that spurious minima do not arise from spontaneous symmetry breaking but rather through a complex deformation of the landscape geometry that can be encoded by a generic $S_n$-equivariant bifurcation. We describe minimal models for forced symmetry breaking that give a lower bound on the dynamic complexity involved in the creation of spurious minima when there is no symmetry. Results on generic bifurcation when there are quadratic equivariants are also proved; this work extends and clarifies results of Ihrig & Golubitsky and Chossat, Lauterback & Melbourne on the instability of solutions when there are quadratic equivariants.
