We present the first study of the intrinsic electrical properties of WS$_2$ transistors fabricated with two different dielectric environments WS$_2$ on SiO$_2$ and WS$_2$ on h-BN/SiO$_2$, respectively. A comparative analysis of the electrical characteristics of multiple transistors fabricated from natural and synthetic WS$_2$ with various thicknesses from single- up to four-layers and over a wide temperature range from 300K down to 4.2 K shows that disorder intrinsic to WS$_2$ is currently the limiting factor of the electrical properties of this material. These results shed light on the role played by extrinsic factors such as charge traps in the oxide dielectric thought to be the cause for the commonly observed small values of charge carrier mobility in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Embedding a WS$_2$ monolayer in flakes of hexagonal boron nitride allowed us to resolve and study the photoluminescence response due to both singlet and triplet states of negatively charged excitons (trions) in this atomically thin semiconductor. The energy separation between the singlet and triplet states has been found to be relatively small reflecting rather weak effects of the electron-electron exchange interaction for the trion triplet in a WS$_2$ monolayer, which involves two electrons with the same spin but from different valleys. Polarization-resolved experiments demonstrate that the helicity of the excitation light is better preserved in the emission spectrum of the triplet trion than in that of the singlet trion. Finally, the singlet (intravalley) trions are found to be observable even at ambient conditions whereas the emission due to the triplet (intervalley) trions is only efficient at low temperatures.

We report on the fabrication and electrical characterisation of etched graphene single electron transistors (SETs) of various sizes on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in high magnetic fields. The electronic transport measurements show a slight improvem ent compared to graphene SETs on SiO2. In particular, SETs on hBN are more stable under the influence of perpendicular magnetic fields up to 9T in contrast to measurements reported on SETs on SiO2. This result indicates a reduced surface disorder potential in SETs on hBN which might be an important step towards clean and more controllable graphene QDs.

We study fully hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-encapsulated graphene spin valve devices at room temperature. The device consists of a graphene channel encapsulated between two crystalline hBN flakes; thick-hBN flake as a bottom gate dielectric substrat e which masks the charge impurities from SiO2/Si substrate and single-layer thin-hBN flake as a tunnel barrier. Full encapsulation prevents the graphene from coming in contact with any polymer/chemical during the lithography and thus gives homogeneous charge and spin transport properties across different regions of the encapsulated graphene. Further, even with the multiple electrodes in between the injection and the detection electrodes which are in conductivity mismatch regime, we observe spin transport over 12.5 um long distance under the thin-hBN encapsulated graphene channel, demonstrating the clean interface and the pin-hole free nature of the thin-hBN as an efficient tunnel barrier.
Graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (G/$h$-BN) heterostructures offer an excellent platform for developing nanoelectronic devices and for exploring correlated states in graphene under modulation by a periodic superlattice potential. Here, we report on t ransport measurements of nearly $0^{circ}$-twisted G/$h$-BN heterostructures. The heterostructures investigated are prepared by dry transfer and thermally annealing processes and are in the low mobility regime (approximately $3000~mathrm{cm}^{2}mathrm{V}^{-1}mathrm{s}^{-1}$ at 1.9 K). The replica Dirac spectra and Hofstadter butterfly spectra are observed on the hole transport side, but not on the electron transport side, of the heterostructures. We associate the observed electron-hole asymmetry to the presences of a large difference between the opened gaps in the conduction and valence bands and a strong enhancement in the interband contribution to the conductivity on the electron transport side in the low-mobility G/$h$-BN heterostructures. We also show that the gaps opened at the central Dirac point and the hole-branch secondary Dirac point are large, suggesting the presence of strong graphene-substrate interaction and electron-electron interaction in our G/$h$-BN heterostructures. Our results provide additional helpful insight into the transport mechanism in G/$h$-BN heterostructures.
Kohn anomalies in three-dimensional metallic crystals are dips in the phonon dispersion that are caused by abrupt changes in the screening of the ion-cores by the surrounding electron-gas. These anomalies are also present at the high-symmetry points Gamma and K in the phonon dispersion of two-dimensional graphene, where the phonon wave-vector connects two points on the Fermi surface. The linear slope around the kinks in the highest optical branch is proportional to the electron-phonon coupling. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the influence of the dielectric substrate on the vibrational properties of graphene. We show that screening by the dielectric substrate reduces the electron-phonon coupling at the high-symmetry point K and leads to an up-shift of the Raman 2D-line. This results in the observation of a Kohn anomaly that can be tuned by screening. The exact position of the 2D-line can thus be taken also as a signature for changes in the (electron-phonon limited) conductivity of graphene.
