This paper investigates delay-distortion-power trade offs in transmission of quasi-stationary sources over block fading channels by studying encoder and decoder buffering techniques to smooth out the source and channel variations. Four source and channel coding schemes that consider buffer and power constraints are presented to minimize the reconstructed source distortion. The first one is a high performance scheme, which benefits from optimized source and channel rate adaptation. In the second scheme, the channel coding rate is fixed and optimized along with transmission power with respect to channel and source variations; hence this scheme enjoys simplicity of implementation. The two last schemes have fixed transmission power with optimized adaptive or fixed channel coding rate. For all the proposed schemes, closed form solutions for mean distortion, optimized rate and power are provided and in the high SNR regime, the mean distortion exponent and the asymptotic mean power gains are derived. The proposed schemes with buffering exploit the diversity due to source and channel variations. Specifically, when the buffer size is limited, fixed channel rate adaptive power scheme outperforms an adaptive rate fixed power scheme. Furthermore, analytical and numerical results demonstrate that with limited buffer size, the system performance in terms of reconstructed signal SNR saturates as transmission power is increased, suggesting that appropriate buffer size selection is important to achieve a desired reconstruction quality.

The fading wire-tap channel is investigated, where the source-to-destination channel and the source-to-wire-tapper channel are corrupted by multiplicative fading gain coefficients in addition to additive Gaussian noise terms. The channel state inform ation is assumed to be known at both the transmitter and the receiver. The parallel wire-tap channel with independent subchannels is first studied, which serves as an information-theoretic model for the fading wire-tap channel. The secrecy capacity of the parallel wire-tap channel is established. This result is then specialized to give the secrecy capacity of the fading wire-tap channel, which is achieved with the source node dynamically changing the power allocation according to the channel state realization. An optimal source power allocation is obtained to achieve the secrecy capacity.
In this paper the performance limits and design principles of rateless codes over fading channels are studied. The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is used to analyze the system performance for all possible transmission rates. It is revealed fro m the analysis that the design of such rateless codes follows the design principle of approximately universal codes for parallel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, in which each sub-channel is a MIMO channel. More specifically, it is shown that for a single-input single-output (SISO) channel, the previously developed permutation codes of unit length for parallel channels having rate LR can be transformed directly into rateless codes of length L having multiple rate levels (R, 2R, . . ., LR), to achieve the DMT performance limit.
This paper concerns the maximum coding rate at which data can be transmitted over a noncoherent, single-antenna, Rayleigh block-fading channel using an error-correcting code of a given blocklength with a block-error probability not exceeding a given value. A high-SNR normal approximation of the maximum coding rate is presented that becomes accurate as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the number of coherence intervals $L$ over which we code tend to infinity. Numerical analyses suggest that the approximation is accurate at SNR values above 15dB and when the number of coherence intervals is 10 or more.
Discrete-time Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are considered, with no channel state information at the transmitter and receiver. The fading is assumed to be correlated in time and independent from antenna to antenna. Pe ak and average transmit power constraints are imposed, either on the sum over antennas, or on each individual antenna. In both cases, an upper bound and an asymptotic lower bound, as the signal-to-noise ratio approaches zero, on the channel capacity are presented. The limit of normalized capacity is identified under the sum power constraints, and, for a subclass of channels, for individual power constraints. These results carry over to a SISO channel with delay spread (i.e. frequency selective fading).
An encoder, subject to a rate constraint, wishes to describe a Gaussian source under squared error distortion. The decoder, besides receiving the encoders description, also observes side information consisting of uncompressed source symbol subject to slow fading and noise. The decoder knows the fading realization but the encoder knows only its distribution. The rate-distortion function that simultaneously satisfies the distortion constraints for all fading states was derived by Heegard and Berger. A layered encoding strategy is considered in which each codeword layer targets a given fading state. When the side-information channel has two discrete fading states, the expected distortion is minimized by optimally allocating the encoding rate between the two codeword layers. For multiple fading states, the minimum expected distortion is formulated as the solution of a convex optimization problem with linearly many variables and constraints. Through a limiting process on the primal and dual solutions, it is shown that single-layer rate allocation is optimal when the fading probability density function is continuous and quasiconcave (e.g., Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami, and log-normal). In particular, under Rayleigh fading, the optimal single codeword layer targets the least favorable state as if the side information was absent.
