We report on early results from a pilot program searching for metal-poor stars with LAMOST and follow-up high-resolution observation acquired with the MIKE spectrograph attached to the Magellan~II telescope. We performed detailed abundance analysis for eight objects with iron abundances [Fe/H] < -2.0, including five extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) stars with two having [Fe/H] < -3.5. Among these objects, three are newly discovered EMP stars, one of which is confirmed for the first time with high-resolution spectral observations. Three program stars are regarded as carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, including two stars with no enhancement in their neutron-capture elements, which thus possibly belong to the class of CEMP-no stars; one of these objects also exhibits significant enhancement in nitrogen, and is thus a potential carbon and nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor star. The [X/Fe] ratios of the sample stars generally agree with those reported in the literature for other metal-poor stars in the same [Fe/H] range. We also compared the abundance patterns of individual program stars with the average abundance pattern of metal-poor stars, and find only one chemically peculiar object with abundances of at least two elements (other than C and N) showing deviations larger than 0.5dex. The distribution of [Sr/Ba] versus [Ba/H] agrees that an additional nucleosynthesis mechanism is needed aside from a single r-process. Two program stars with extremely low abundances of Sr and Ba support the prospect that both main and weak r-process may have operated during the early phase of Galactic chemical evolution. The distribution of [C/N] shows that there are two groups of carbon-normal giants with different degrees of mixing. However, it is difficult to explain the observed behavior of the [C/N] of the nitrogen-enhanced unevolved stars based on current data.

We report on the observations of two ultra metal-poor (UMP) stars with [Fe/H]~-4.0 including one new discovery. The two stars are studied in the on-going and quite efficient project to search for extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars with LAMOST and Subar u. Detailed abundances or upper limits of abundances have been derived for 15 elements from Li to Eu based on high-resolution spectra obtained with Subaru/HDS. The abundance patterns of both UMP stars are consistent with the normal-population among the low-metallicity stars. Both of the two program stars show carbon-enhancement without any excess of heavy neutron-capture elements, indicating that they belong to the subclass of CEMP-no stars, as is the case of most UMP stars previously studied. The [Sr/Ba] ratios of both CEMP-no UMP stars are above [Sr/Ba]~-0.4, suggesting the origin of the carbon-excess is not compatible with the mass transfer from an AGB companion where the s-process has operated. Lithium abundance is measured in the newly discovered UMP star LAMOST J125346.09+075343.1, making it the second UMP turnoff star with Li detection. The Li abundance of LAMOST J125346.09+075343.1 is slightly lower than the values obtained for less metal-poor stars with similar temperature, and provides a unique data point at [Fe/H]~-4.2 to support the meltdown of the Li Spite-plateau at extremely low metallicity. Comparison with the other two UMP and HMP (hyper metal-poor with [Fe/H]<-5.0) turnoff stars suggests that the difference in lighter elements such as CNO and Na might cause notable difference in lithium abundances among CEMP-no stars.
A chemo-dynamical analysis of 115 metal-poor candidate stars selected from the narrow-band Pristine photometric survey is presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDoNS spectroscopy. We have discover 28 new bright (V < 15) stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 an d 5 with [Fe/H]<-3.0 for success rates of 40% (28/70) and 19% (5/27), respectively. A detailed model atmospheres analysis is carried out for the 28 new metal-poor stars. Stellar parameters were determined from SDSS photometric colours, Gaia DR2 parallaxes, MESA/MIST stellar isochrones, and the initial Pristine survey metallicities, following a Bayesian inference method. Chemical abundances are determined for 10 elements (Na, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, Ba). Most stars show chemical abundance patterns that are similar to the normal metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo; however, we also report the discoveries of a new r-process rich star, a new CEMP-s candidate with [Y/Ba]>0, and a metal-poor star with very low [Mg/Fe]. The kinematics and orbits for all of the highly probable metal-poor candidates are determined by combining our precision radial velocities with Gaia DR2 proper motions. Some stars show unusual kinematics for their chemistries, including planar orbits, unbound orbits, and highly elliptical orbits that plunge deeply into the Galactic bulge (Rperi < 0.5 kpc); also, eight stars have orbital energies and actions consistent with the Gaia-Enceladus accretion event. This paper contributes to our understanding of the complex chemo-dynamics of the metal-poor Galaxy, and increases the number of known bright metal-poor stars available for detailed nucleosynthetic studies.
The nature of the first massive stars may be inferred by investigating the origin of the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars, likely formed from the ejecta of one or a few previous massive stars. We investigate the rotational properties of early massive stars by comparing the abundance patterns of EMP stars with rotating massive stellar models. Low metallicity 20 $M_{odot}$ stellar models with initial rotation rates between 0 and $70~%$ of the critical velocity are computed. Explosions with strong fallback are assumed. The ejected material is considered to fit individually the abundance patterns of 272 EMP stars with $-4<$ [Fe/H] $<-3$. With increasing initial rotation, the [C/H], [N/H], [O/H], [Na/H], [Mg/H] and [Al/H] ratios in the massive star ejecta are gradually increased. Among the 272 EMP stars considered, $sim 40-50~%$ are consistent with our models. About $60 - 70~%$ of the CEMP star sample is reproduced against $sim 20 - 30~%$ for the C-normal EMP star sample. The CEMP stars are preferentially reproduced with a material coming from mid to fast rotating massive stars. The velocity distribution derived from the best massive star models increases from no rotation to fast rotation. The maximum is reached for massive stars having initial equatorial velocities of $sim 550 - 640$ km~s$^{-1}$. Although subject to significant uncertainties, these results suggest that the rotational mixing operating in between the H-burning shell and the He-burning core of early massive stars played an important role in the early chemical enrichment of the Universe. The comparison of the velocity distribution derived from the best massive star models with velocity distributions of nearby OB stars suggests a greater amount of massive fast rotators in the early Universe. This may have important consequences for reionization or integrated light from high redshift galaxies.
We present 22,901 OB spectra of 16,032 stars identified from LAMOST DR5 dataset. A larger sample of OB candidates are firstly selected from the distributions in the spectral line indices space. Then all 22,901 OB spectra are identified by manual insp ection. Based on a sub-sample validation, we find that the completeness of the OB spectra reaches about $89pm22$% for the stars with spectral type earlier than B7, while around $57pm16$% B8--B9 stars are identified. The smaller completeness for late B stars is lead to the difficulty to discriminate them from A0--A1 type stars. The sub-classes of the OB samples are determined using the software package MKCLASS. With a careful validation using 646 sub-samples, we find that MKCLASS can give fairly reliable sub-types and luminosity class for most of the OB stars. The uncertainty of the spectral sub-type is around 1 sub-type and the uncertainty of the luminosity class is around 1 level. However, about 40% of the OB stars are failed to be assigned to any class by MKCLASS and a few spectra are significantly misclassified by MKCLASS. This is likely because that the template spectra of MKCLASS are selected from nearby stars in the solar neighborhood, while the OB stars in this work are mostly located in the outer disk and may have lower metallicity. The rotation of the OB stars may also be responsible for the mis-classifications. Moreover, we find that the spectral and luminosity classes of the OB stars located in the Galactic latitude larger than 20$^circ$ are substantially different with those located in latitude smaller than 20$^circ$, which may either due to the observational selection effect or hint a different origin of the high Galactic latitude OB stars.
The large amount of chemical and kinematic information available in large spectroscopic surveys have inspired the search for chemically peculiar stars in the field. Though these metal-poor field stars ([Fe/H$]<-1$) are commonly enriched in nitrogen, their detailed spatial, kinematic, and chemical distributions suggest that various groups may exist, and thus their origin is still a mystery. To study these stars statistically, we increase the sample size by identifying new CN-strong stars with LAMOST DR3 for the first time. We use CN-CH bands around 4000 AA~to find CN-strong stars, and further separate them into CH-normal stars (44) and CH-strong (or CH) stars (35). The chemical abundances from our data-driven software and APOGEE DR 14 suggest that most CH-normal stars are N-rich, and it cannot be explained by only internal mixing process. The kinematics of our CH-normal stars indicate a substantial fraction of these stars are retrograding, pointing to an extragalactic origin. The chemistry and kinematics of CH-normal stars imply that they may be GC-dissolved stars, or accreted halo stars, or both.
