Magnetic order and excitations in multiferroic DyMnO3 were studied by neutron scattering experiments using a single crystal prepared with enriched 162Dy isotope. The ordering of Mn moments exhibits pronounced hysteresis arising from the interplay between Mn and Dy magnetism which possesses a strong impact on the ferroelectric polarization. The magnon dispersion resembles that reported for TbMnO3. We identify the excitations at the magnetic zone center and near the zone boundary in the b direction, which can possess electromagnon character. The lowest frequency of the zone-center magnons is in good agreement with a signal in a recent optical measurement so that this mode can be identified as the electromagnon coupled by the same Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction as the static multiferroic phase.

We present data on the magnetic and magneto-elastic coupling in the hexagonal multiferroic manganite LuMnO3 from inelastic neutron scattering, magnetization and thermal expansion measurements. We measured the magnon dispersion along the main symmetry directions and used this data to determine the principal exchange parameters from a spin-wave model. An analysis of the magnetic anisotropy in terms of the crystal field acting on the Mn is presented. We compare the results for LuMnO3 with data on other hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.
Rare earth (R) half-Heusler compounds, RBiPt, exhibit a wide spectrum of novel ground states. Recently, GdBiPt has been proposed as a potential antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFTI). We have employed x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to elu cidate the microscopic details of the magnetic structure in GdBiPt below T_N = 8.5 K. Experiments at the Gd L_2 absorption edge show that the Gd moments order in an antiferromagnetic stacking along the cubic diagonal [1 1 1] direction satisfying the requirement for an AFTI, where both time-reversal symmetry and lattice translational symmetry are broken, but their product is conserved.
The magnetic ordering of the hexagonal multiferroic compound YbMnO$_3$ has been studied between 100 K and 1.5 K by combining neutron powder diffraction, $^{170}$Yb Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The Yb moments of the two cryst allographic sites order at two different temperatures, the $4b$ site together with the Mn moments (at $T_N simeq$85 K) and the $2a$ site well below (at 3.5 K). The temperature dependences of the Mn and Yb moments are explained within a molecular field model, showing that the $4b$ and $2a$ sites order via Yb-Mn and Yb-Yb interactions respectively. A simple picture taking into account the local Mn environment of the Rare earth R ($4b$) ion is proposed to couple R and Mn orders in hexagonal RMnO$_3$ manganites. The nature and symmetry of the R-Mn interactions yielding the R order are discussed.
We have performed elastic neutron scattering experiments under uniaxial stress sigma applied along the tetragonal [100], [110] and [001] directions for the heavy electron compound URu2Si2. We found that antiferromagnetic (AF) order with large moment is developed with sigma along the [100] and [110] directions. If the order is assumed to be homogeneous, the staggered ordered moment mu_o continuously increases from 0.02 mu_B (sigma=0) to 0.22 mu_B (0.25 GPa). The rate of increase partial mu_o/partial sigma is ~ 1.0 mu_B/GPa, which is four times larger than that for the hydrostatic pressure (partial mu_o/partial P sim 0.25 mu_B/GPa). Above 0.25 GPa, mu_o shows a tendency to saturate, similar to the hydrostatic pressure behavior. For sigma||[001], mu_o shows only a slight increase to 0.028 mu_B (sigma = 0.46 GPa) with a rate of ~ 0.02 mu_B/GPa, indicating that the development of the AF state highly depends on the direction of sigma. We have also found a clear hysteresis loop in the isothermal mu_o(sigma) curve obtained for sigma||[110] under the zero-stress-cooled condition at 1.4 K. This strongly suggests that the sigma-induced AF phase is metastable, and separated from the hidden order phase by a first-order phase transition. We discuss these experimental results on the basis of crystalline strain effects and elastic energy calculations, and show that the c/a ratio plays a key role in the competition between these two phases.

By inelastic neutron scattering, we have analyzed the magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic metallic region of the series Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4), 0.2<=x<=0.62. We find different contributions that correspond to 2D ferromagnetic fluctuations and to fl uctuations at incommensurate wave vectors (0.11,0,0), (0.26,0,0) and (0.3,0.3,0). These components constitute the measured response as function of the Sr-concentration x, of the magnetic field and of the temperature. A generic model is applicable to metallic Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) close to the Mott transition, in spite of their strongly varying physical properties. The amplitude, characteristic energy and width of the incommensurate components vary only little as function of x, but the ferromagnetic component depends sensitively on concentration, temperature and magnetic field. While ferromagnetic fluctuations are very strong in Ca1.38Sr0.62RuO4 with a low characteristic energy of 0.2 meV at T=1.5 K, they are strongly suppressed in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4, but reappear upon the application of a magnetic field and form a magnon mode above the metamagnetic transition. The inelastic neutron scattering results document how the competition between ferromagnetic and incommensurate antiferromagnetic instabilities governs the physics of this system.
