By inelastic neutron scattering, we have analyzed the magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic metallic region of the series Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4), 0.2<=x<=0.62. We find different contributions that correspond to 2D ferromagnetic fluctuations and to fluctuations at incommensurate wave vectors (0.11,0,0), (0.26,0,0) and (0.3,0.3,0). These components constitute the measured response as function of the Sr-concentration x, of the magnetic field and of the temperature. A generic model is applicable to metallic Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) close to the Mott transition, in spite of their strongly varying physical properties. The amplitude, characteristic energy and width of the incommensurate components vary only little as function of x, but the ferromagnetic component depends sensitively on concentration, temperature and magnetic field. While ferromagnetic fluctuations are very strong in Ca1.38Sr0.62RuO4 with a low characteristic energy of 0.2 meV at T=1.5 K, they are strongly suppressed in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4, but reappear upon the application of a magnetic field and form a magnon mode above the metamagnetic transition. The inelastic neutron scattering results document how the competition between ferromagnetic and incommensurate antiferromagnetic instabilities governs the physics of this system.

The strongly correlated insulator Ca$_{2}$RuO$_4$ is considered as a paradigmatic realization of both spin-orbital physics and a band-Mott insulating phase, characterized by orbitally selective coexistence of a band and a Mott gap. We present a high- resolution oxygen $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering study of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state of Ca$_{2}$RuO$_4$. A set of low-energy ($sim$80 and 400 meV) and high-energy ($sim$1.3 and 2.2 eV) excitations are reported that show strong incident light polarization dependence. Our results strongly support a spin-orbit coupled band-Mott scenario and explore in detail the nature of its exotic excitations. Guided by theoretical modelling, we interpret the low-energy excitations as a result of composite spin-orbital excitations. Their nature unveil the intricate interplay of crystal-field splitting and spin-orbit coupling in the band-Mott scenario. The high-energy excitations correspond to intra-atomic singlet-triplet transitions at an energy scale set by the Hunds coupling. Our findings give a unifying picture of the spin and orbital excitations in the band-Mott insulator Ca$_{2}$RuO$_4$.

We have performed neutron inelastic scattering and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu-$L_3$ edge to study high-energy magnetic excitations at energy transfers of more than 100 meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0. 25$ ($T_c=15$ K) and $x=0.30$ (non-superconducting) using identical single crystal samples for the two techniques. From constant-energy slices of neutron scattering cross-sections, we have identified magnetic excitations up to ~250 meV for $x=0.25$. Although the width in the momentum direction is large, the peak positions along the (pi, pi) direction agree with the dispersion relation of the spin-wave in the non-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCO), which is consistent with the previous RIXS results of cuprate superconductors. Using RIXS at the Cu-$L_3$ edge, we have measured the dispersion relations of the so-called paramagnon mode along both (pi, pi) and (pi, 0) directions. Although in both directions the neutron and RIXS data connect with each other and the paramagnon along (pi, 0) agrees well with the LCO spin-wave dispersion, the paramagnon in the (pi, pi) direction probed by RIXS appears to be less dispersive and the excitation energy is lower than the spin-wave of LCO near (pi/2, pi/2). Thus, our results indicate consistency between neutron inelastic scattering and RIXS, and elucidate the entire magnetic excitation in the (pi, pi) direction by the complementary use of two probes. The polarization dependence of the RIXS profiles indicates that appreciable charge excitations exist in the same energy range of magnetic excitations, reflecting the itinerant character of the overdoped sample. A possible anisotropy in the charge excitation intensity might explain the apparent differences in the paramagnon dispersion in the (pi, pi) direction as detected by the X-ray scattering.
We present data on the magnetic and magneto-elastic coupling in the hexagonal multiferroic manganite LuMnO3 from inelastic neutron scattering, magnetization and thermal expansion measurements. We measured the magnon dispersion along the main symmetry directions and used this data to determine the principal exchange parameters from a spin-wave model. An analysis of the magnetic anisotropy in terms of the crystal field acting on the Mn is presented. We compare the results for LuMnO3 with data on other hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.
We performed a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4+{delta}}$ (LSNO) at the oxygen $K$ edge to investigate the nature of the doped holes with regard to charge excitations. Charge excitations of the hole-doped nickelates are found to be almost independent of momentum transfer, indicating that the doped holes are strongly localized in character. Additionally, conspicuous changes in energy position are in temperature dependence. These characters are observed in stark contrast to those of the high-$T_{c}$ cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO), where delocalized doped holes form charge excitations with sizable momentum dependence in the CuO$_2$ plane. This distinct nature of charge excitations of doped holes is consistent with the metallicity of the materials and could be caused by strong electron-phonon coupling and weak quantum spin fluctuation in the nickelates.

The magnetoelastic coupling in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ and in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$ has been studied combining high-resolution dilatometer and diffraction techniques. Both compounds exhibit strong anomalies in the thermal-expansion coeffici ent at zero and at high magnetic field as well as an exceptionally large magnetostriction. All these structural effects, which are strongest in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, point to a redistribution of electrons between the different $t_{2g}$ orbitals tuned by temperature and magnetic field. The temperature and the field dependence of the thermal-expansion anomalies in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ yield evidence for a critical end-point lying close to the low-temperature metamagnetic transition; however, the expected scaling relations are not well fulfilled.
