The initial velocity dispersion of newborn stars is a major unconstrained aspect of star formation theory. Using near-infrared spectra obtained with the APOGEE spectrograph, we show that the velocity dispersion of young (1-2 Myr) stars in NGC 1333 is 0.92+/-0.12 km/s after correcting for measurement uncertainties and the effect of binaries. This velocity dispersion is consistent with the virial velocity of the region and the diffuse gas velocity dispersion, but significantly larger than the velocity dispersion of the dense, star-forming cores, which have a sub-virial velocity dispersion of 0.5 km/s. Since the NGC 1333 cluster is dynamically young and deeply embedded, this measurement provides a strong constraint on the initial velocity dispersion of newly-formed stars. We propose that the difference in velocity dispersion between stars and dense cores may be due to the influence of a 70 micro-Gauss magnetic field acting on the dense cores, or be the signature of a cluster with initial sub-structure undergoing global collapse.

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey Measuring Young Stars in Space and Time (MYSST) entails some of the deepest photometric observations of extragalactic star formation, capturing even the lowest mass stars of the active star-forming complex N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We employ the new MYSST stellar catalog to identify and characterize the content of young pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars across N44 and analyze the PMS clustering structure. To distinguish PMS stars from more evolved line of sight contaminants, a non-trivial task due to several effects that alter photometry, we utilize a machine learning classification approach. This consists of training a support vector machine (SVM) and a random forest (RF) on a carefully selected subset of the MYSST data and categorize all observed stars as PMS or non-PMS. Combining SVM and RF predictions to retrieve the most robust set of PMS sources, we find $sim26,700$ candidates with a PMS probability above 95% across N44. Employing a clustering approach based on a nearest neighbor surface density estimate, we identify 18 prominent PMS structures at $1$ $sigma$ significance above the mean density with sub-clusters persisting up to and beyond $3$ $sigma$ significance. The most active star-forming center, located at the western edge of N44s bubble, is a subcluster with an effective radius of $sim 5.6$ pc entailing more than 1,100 PMS candidates. Furthermore, we confirm that almost all identified clusters coincide with known H II regions and are close to or harbor massive young O stars or YSOs previously discovered by MUSE and Spitzer observations.
The kinematic properties of young stars that have not yet reached the stage of the main sequence are studied. The selection of these stars was recently carried out by Marton et al. (2019) and Vioque et al. (2020) according to the Gaia DR2 catalog usi ng a number of photometric infrared surveys. We have determined the rotation parameters of the Galaxy and the parameters of the ellipsoids of the residual velocities. The linear velocity of the circular rotation of a solar region around the center of the Galaxy, found using 4431 stars, is equal to V_0=229.1+-4.4 km/s. The following ellipsoid parameters of their residual velocities are found from low-mass stars (of type T Tau): $sigma_{1,2,3}=(9.45,6.99,6.61)pm(0.94,0.43,0.32)$ km/s. For stars of intermediate masses (Herbig Ae/Be stars), their values turned out to be somewhat larger $sigma_{1,2,3}=(13.67,9.25,7.26)pm(2.40,2.44,0.88)$ km/s. Distant stars from both Catalogs trace the local spiral arm well. For 1212 stars, a new estimate of the pitch angle of the Local spiral arm is equal to i=-8.9+-0.1 deg.
We present results of multi-epoch (fourteen nights during 2007-2010) $V$-band photometry of the cluster NGC 1893 region to identify photometric variable stars in the cluster. The study identified a total of 53 stars showing photometric variability. T he members associated with the region are identified on the basis of spectral energy distribution, $J-H/H-K$ two colour diagram and $V/V-I$ colour-magnitude diagram. The ages and masses of the majority of pre-main-sequence sources are found to be $lesssim$ 5 Myr and in the range 0.5 $lesssim$ $M/M_{odot}$ $lesssim$ 4, respectively. These pre-main-sequence sources hence could be T Tauri stars. We also determined the physical parameters like disk mass and accretion rate from the spectral energy distribution of these T Tauri stars. The periods of majority of the T Tauri stars range from 0.1 to 20 day. The brightness of Classical T Tauri stars is found to vary with larger amplitude in comparison to Weak line T Tauri stars. It is found that the amplitude decreases with increase in mass, which could be due to the dispersal of disks of massive stars.

We present initial result of a large spectroscopic survey aimed at measuring the timescale of mass accretion in young, pre-main-sequence stars in the spectral type range K0 - M5. Using multi-object spectroscopy with VIMOS at the VLT we identified the fraction of accreting stars in a number of young stellar clusters and associations of ages between 1 - 50 Myr. The fraction of accreting stars decreases from ~60% at 1.5 - 2 Myr to ~2% at 10 Myr. No accreting stars are found after 10 Myr at a sensitivity limit of $10^{-11}$ Msun yr-1. We compared the fraction of stars showing ongoing accretion (f_acc) to the fraction of stars with near-to-mid infrared excess (f_IRAC). In most cases we find f_acc < f_IRAC, i.e., mass accretion appears to cease (or drop below detectable level) earlier than the dust is dissipated in the inner disk. At 5 Myr, 95% of the stellar population has stopped accreting material at a rate of > 10^{-11} Msun yr-1, while ~20% of the stars show near-infrared excess emission. Assuming an exponential decay, we measure a mass accretion timescale (t_acc) of 2.3 Myr, compared to a near-to-mid infrared excess timescale (t_IRAC) of 2.9 Myr. Planet formation, and/or migration, in the inner disk might be a viable mechanism to halt further accretion onto the central star on such a short timescale.
The Halo Assembly in Lambda-CDM: Observations in 7 Dimensions (HALO7D) dataset consists of Keck II/DEIMOS spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope-measured proper motions of Milky Way (MW) halo main sequence turnoff stars in the CANDELS fields. In thi s paper, the second in the HALO7D series, we present the proper motions for the HALO7D sample. We discuss our measurement methodology, which makes use of a Bayesian mixture modeling approach for creating the stationary reference frame of distant galaxies. Using the 3D kinematic HALO7D sample, we estimate the parameters of the halo velocity ellipsoid, $langle v_{phi} rangle, sigma_r, sigma_{phi}, sigma_{theta}$, and the velocity anisotropy $beta$. Using the full HALO7D sample, we find $beta=0.63 pm 0.05$ at $langle r rangle =24$ kpc. We also estimate the ellipsoid parameters for our sample split into three apparent magnitude bins; the posterior medians for these estimates of $beta$, while consistent with one another, increase as a function of mean sample distance. Finally, we estimate $beta$ in each of the individual HALO7D fields. We find that the velocity anisotropy $beta$ can vary from field to field, which suggests that the halo is not phase mixed at $langle r rangle =24$ kpc. We explore the $beta$ variation across the skies of two stellar halos from the textit{Latte} suite of FIRE-2 simulations, finding that both simulated galaxies show $beta$ variation over a similar range to the variation observed across the four HALO7D fields. The accretion histories of the two simulated galaxies result in different $beta$ variation patterns; spatially mapping $beta$ is thus a way forward in characterizing the accretion history of the Galaxy.
