Alternative theories to quantum mechanics motivate important fundamental tests of our understanding and descriptions of the smallest physical systems. Here, using spontaneous parametric downconversion as a heralded single-photon source, we place experimental limits on a class of alternative theories, consisting of classical field theories which result in power-dependent normalized correlation functions. In addition, we compare our results with standard quantum mechanical interpretations of our spontaneous parametric downconversion source over an order of magnitude in intensity. Our data match the quantum mechanical expectations, and do not show a statistically significant dependence on power, limiting on quantum mechanics alternatives which require power-dependent autocorrelation functions.

We implemented the experiment proposed by Cabello [arXiv:quant-ph/0309172] to test the bounds of quantum correlation. As expected from the theory we found that, for certain choices of local observables, Cirelsons bound of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Ho lt inequality ($2sqrt{2}$) is not reached by any quantum states.
In this paper we discuss how the gauge principle can be applied to classical-mechanics models with finite degrees of freedom. The local invariance of a model is understood as its invariance under the action of a matrix Lie group of transformations pa rametrized by arbitrary functions. It is formally presented how this property can be introduced in such systems, followed by modern applications. Furthermore, Lagrangians describing classical-mechanics systems with local invariance are separated in equivalence classes according to their local structures.
We extend the work of Hellerman (arxiv:0902.2790) to derive an upper bound on the conformal dimension $Delta_2$ of the next-to-lowest nontrival primary operator in unitary two-dimensional conformal field theories without chiral primary operators. The bound we find is of the same form as found for $Delta_1$: $Delta_2 leq c_{tot}/12 + O(1)$. We find a similar bound on the conformal dimension $Delta_3$, and present a method for deriving bounds on $Delta_n$ for any $n$, under slightly modified assumptions. For asymptotically large $c_{tot}$ and fixed $n$, we show that $Delta_n leq frac{c_{tot}}{12}+O(1)$. We conclude with a brief discussion of the gravitational implications of these results.
We introduce a minimal set of physically motivated postulates that the Hamiltonian H of a continuous-time quantum walk should satisfy in order to properly represent the quantum counterpart of the classical random walk on a given graph. We found that these conditions are satisfied by infinitely many quantum Hamiltonians, which provide novel degrees of freedom for quantum enhanced protocols, In particular, the on-site energies, i.e. the diagonal elements of H, and the phases of the off-diagonal elements are unconstrained on the quantum side. The diagonal elements represent a potential energy landscape for the quantum walk, and may be controlled by the interaction with a classical scalar field, whereas, for regular lattices in generic dimension, the off-diagonal phases of H may be tuned by the interaction with a classical gauge field residing on the edges, e.g., the electro-magnetic vector potential for a charged walker.
A unifying principle explaining the numerical bounds of quantum correlations remains elusive despite the efforts devoted to identifying it. Here we show that these bounds are indeed not exclusive to quantum theory: for any abstract correlation scenar io with compatible measurements, models based on classical waves produce probability distributions indistinguishable from those of quantum theory and, therefore, share the same bounds. We demonstrate this finding by implementing classical microwaves that propagate along meter-size transmission-line circuits and reproduce the probabilities of three emblematic quantum experiments. Our results show that the quantum bounds would also occur in a classical universe without quanta. The implications of this observation are discussed.
