Spin waves have been studied experimentally and by simulations in 1000 nm side equilateral triangular Permalloy dots in the Buckle state (B, with in-plane field along the triangle base) and the Y state (Y, with in-plane field perpendicular to the base). The excess of exchange energy at the triangles edges creates channels that allow effective spin wave propagation along the edges inthe B state. These quasi one-dimensional spin waves emitted by the vertex magnetic charges gradually transform from propagating to standing due to interference and(as pointed out by simulations) areweakly affected by smallvariations of the aspect ratio(from equilateral to isosceles dots) or by interdot dipolar interaction present in our dot arrays. Spin waves excited in the Y state have mainly a two-dimensional character.Propagation of the spin waves along the edge states in triangular dots opens possibilities for creation of new and versatile spintronic devices.

Broadband magnetization response of equilateral triangular 1000 nm Permalloy dots has been studied under an in-plane magnetic field, applied parallel (buckle state) and perpendicular (Y state) to the triangles base. Micromagnetic simulations identify edge spin waves (E-SWs) in the buckle state as SWs propagating along the two adjacent edges. These quasi one-dimensional spin waves emitted by the vertex magnetic charges gradually transform from propagating to standing due to interference and are weakly affected by dipolar interdot interaction and variation of the aspect ratio. Spin waves in the Y state have a two dimensional character. These findings open perspectives for implementation of the E-SWs in magnonic crystals and thin films.
We study the low energy spin excitations of zigzag graphene nanoribbons of varying width. We find their energy dispersion at small wave vector to be dominated by antiferromagnetic correlations between the ribbons edges, in accrodance with previous ca lculations. We point out that spin wave lifetimes are very long due to the semi-conducting nature of the electrically neutral nanoribbons. However, application of very modest gate voltages cause a discontinuous transition to a regime of finite spin wave lifetime. By further increasing doping the ferromagnetic alignments along the edge become unstable against transverse spin fluctuations. This makes the experimental detection of ferromagnetism is this class of systems very delicate, and poses a difficult challenge to the possible uses of these nanoribbons as basis for spintronic devices.

The presence of edges locally breaks the inversion symmetry of heterostructures and gives rise to lateral (edge) spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which, under some conditions, can lead to the formation of helical edge states. If the edge SOC is strong enou gh, the helical edge states can penetrate the band-gap and be energetically isolated from the bulk-like states. As a result backward scattering is suppressed, dissipationless helical edge channels protected against time-inversion symmetric perturbations emerge, and the system behaves as a 2D topological insulator (TI). However, unlike in previous works on TIs, the mechanism proposed here for the creation of protected helical edge states relies on the strong edge SOC rather than on band inversion.
We study graphene which has both spin-orbit coupling (SOC), taken to be of the Kane-Mele form, and a Zeeman field induced due to proximity to a ferromagnetic material. We show that a zigzag interface of graphene having SOC with its pristine counterpa rt hosts robust chiral edge modes in spite of the gapless nature of the pristine graphene; such modes do not occur for armchair interfaces. Next we study the change in the local density of states (LDOS) due to the presence of an impurity in graphene with SOC and Zeeman field, and demonstrate that the Fourier transform of the LDOS close to the Dirac points can act as a measure of the strength of the spin-orbit coupling; in addition, for a specific distribution of impurity atoms, the LDOS is controlled by a destructive interference effect of graphene electrons which is a direct consequence of their Dirac nature. Finally, we study transport across junctions which separates spin-orbit coupled graphene with Kane-Mele and Rashba terms from pristine graphene both in the presence and absence of a Zeeman field. We demonstrate that such junctions are generally spin active, namely, they can rotate the spin so that an incident electron which is spin polarized along some direction has a finite probability of being transmitted with the opposite spin. This leads to a finite, electrically controllable, spin current in such graphene junctions. We discuss possible experiments which can probe our theoretical predictions.
Spin waves in antiferromagnetic materials have great potential for next-generation magnonic technologies. However, their properties and their dependence on the type of ground-state antiferromagnetic structure are still open questions. Here, we invest igate theoretically spin waves in one- and two-dimensional model systems with a focus on noncollinear antiferromagnetic textures such as spin spirals and skyrmions of opposite topological charges. We address in particular the nonreciprocal spin excitations recently measured in bulk antiferromagnet $alpha$--$text{Cu}_2text{V}_2text{O}_7$ utilizing inelastic neutron scattering experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. textbf{119}, 047201 (2017)], where we help to characterize the nature of the detected spin-wave modes. Furthermore, we discuss how the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can lift the degeneracy of the spin-wave modes in antiferromagnets, resembling the electronic Rashba splitting. We consider the spin-wave excitations in antiferromagnetic spin-spiral and skyrmion systems and discuss the features of their inelastic scattering spectra. We demonstrate that antiskyrmions can be obtained with an isotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in certain antiferromagnets.
