We report high resolution neutron scattering measurements on the triangular lattice Mott insulator Na$_x$CrO$_2$ ($x$=1) which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusually broad fluctuating crossover regime extending far below the onset of spin freezing ($T_csim$41K). Our results show that below some crossover temperature ($Tsim0.75T_c$) a small incommensuration develops which helps resolve the spin frustration and drives three-dimensional magnetic order supporting coherent spin wave modes. This incommensuration assisted dimensional crossover suggests that inter-layer frustration is responsible for stabilizing the rare 2D correlated phase above 0.75$T_c$. In contrast to the host compound of 2D cobaltate superconductor such as Na$_x$CoO$_2$ ($xi_c>50$AA), no magnetic long-range order is observed down to 1.5K ($xi_c<16$AA).
The intertwined charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom could endow 5d compounds with exotic properties. Current interest is focused on electromagnetic interactions in these materials, whereas the important role of lattice geometry rema
The classical ground states of the SU(4) Heisenberg model on the face centered cubic lattice constitute a highly degenerate manifold. We explicitly construct all the classical ground states of the model. To describe quantum fluctuations above these c
We identify and discuss the ground state of a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice with bond-dependent Ising-type spin couplings, that is, a triangular analog of the Kitaev honeycomb model. The classical ground-state manifold of the model is spanne
We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferrom
We have performed high resolution neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the frustrated multiferroic hexagonal compounds RMnO3 (R=Ho, Yb, Sc, Y), which provide evidence of a strong magneto-elastic coupling in the the whol
