Ultracold hybrid ion-atom traps offer the possibility of microscopic manipulation of quantum coherences in the gas using the ion as a probe. However, inelastic processes, particularly charge transfer can be a significant process of ion loss and has been measured experimentally for the Yb$^{+}$ ion immersed in a Rb vapour. We use first-principles quantum chemistry codes to obtain the potential energy curves and dipole moments for the lowest-lying energy states of this complex. Calculations for the radiative decay processes cross sections and rate coefficients are presented for the total decay processes. Comparing the semi-classical Langevin approximation with the quantum approach, we find it provides a very good estimate of the background at higher energies. The results demonstrate that radiative decay mechanisms are important over the energy and temperature region considered. In fact, the Langevin process of ion-atom collisions dominates cold ion-atom collisions. For spin dependent processes cite{kohl13} the anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and the second-order spin-orbit coupling can play important roles, inducing couplingbetween the spin and the orbital motion. They measured the spin-relaxing collision rate to be approximately 5 orders of magnitude higher than the charge-exchange collision rate cite{kohl13}. Regarding the measured radiative charge transfer collision rate, we find that our calculation is in very good agreement with experiment and with previous calculations. Nonetheless, we find no broad resonances features that might underly a strong isotope effect. In conclusion, we find, in agreement with previous theory that the isotope anomaly observed in experiment remains an open question.

In order to study ultracold charge-transfer processes in hybrid atom-ion traps, we have mapped out the potential energy curves and molecular parameters for several low lying states of the Rb, Yb$^+$ system. We employ both a multi-reference configurat ion interaction (MRCI) and a full configuration interaction (FCI) approach. Turning points, crossing points, potential minima and spectroscopic molecular constants are obtained for the lowest five molecular states. Long-range parameters, including the dispersion coefficients are estimated from our {it ab initio} data. The separated-atom ionization potentials and atomic polarizability of the ytterbium atom ($alpha_d=128.4$ atomic units) are in good agreement with experiment and previous calculations. We present some dynamical calculations for (adiabatic) scattering lengths for the two lowest (Yb,Rb$^+$) channels that were carried out in our work. However, we find that the pseudo potential approximation is rather limited in validity, and only applies to nK temperatures. The adiabatic scattering lengths for both the triplet and singlet channels indicate that both are large and negative in the FCI approximation.
We present and derive analytic expressions for a fundamental limit to the sympathetic cooling of ions in radio-frequency traps using cold atoms. The limit arises from the work done by the trap electric field during a long-range ion-atom collision and applies even to cooling by a zero-temperature atomic gas in a perfectly compensated trap. We conclude that in current experimental implementations this collisional heating prevents access to the regimes of single-partial-wave atom-ion interaction or quantized ion motion. We determine conditions on the atom-ion mass ratio and on the trap parameters for reaching the s-wave collision regime and the trap ground state.

We propose a novel type of Rydberg dimer, consisting of a Rydberg-state atom bound to a distant positive ion. The molecule is formed through long-range electric-multipole interaction between the Rydberg atom and the point-like ion. We present potenti al energy curves (PECs) that are asymptotically connected with Rydberg $nP$- or $nD$-states of rubidium or cesium. The PECs exhibit deep, long-range wells which support many vibrational states of Rydberg-atom-ion molecules (RAIMs). We consider photo-association of RAIMs in both the weak and the strong optical-coupling regimes between initial and Rydberg states of the neutral atom. Experimental considerations for the realization of RAIMs are discussed.
We study several new magneto-optical trapping configurations in $^{87}$Rb. These unconventional MOTs all use type-II transitions, where the angular momentum of the ground state is greater than or equal to that of the excited state, and they may use e ither red-detuned or blue-detuned light. We describe the conditions under which each new MOT forms. The various MOTs exhibit an enormous range of lifetimes, temperatures and density distributions. At the detunings where they are maximized, the lifetimes of the various MOTs vary from 0.1 to 15 s. One MOT forms large ring-like structures with no density at the centre. The temperature in the red-detuned MOTs can be three orders of magnitude higher than in the blue-detuned MOTs. We present measurements of the capture velocity of a blue-detuned MOT, and we study how the loss rate due to ultracold collisions depends on laser intensity and detuning.
We inspect the first-order electron-electron capture scenario for transfer ionization that has been recently formulated by Voitkiv et al. (Phys. Rev. A 86, 012709 (2012) and references therein). Using the multichannel scattering theory for many-body systems with Coulomb interactions, we show that this scenario is just a part of the well-studied Oppenheimer-Brinkmann-Kramers approximation. Accurate numerical calculations in this approximation for the proton-helium transfer ionization reaction exhibit no appreciable manifestation of the claimed mechanism.
