Several channels with asynchronous side information are introduced. We first consider single-user state-dependent channels with asynchronous side information at the transmitter. It is assumed that the state information sequence is a possibly delayed version of the state sequence, and that the encoder and the decoder are aware of the fact that the state information might be delayed. It is additionally assumed that an upper bound on the delay is known to both encoder and decoder, but other than that, they are ignorant of the actual delay. We consider both the causal and the noncausal cases and present achievable rates for these channels, and the corresponding coding schemes. We find the capacity of the asynchronous Gelfand-Pinsker channel with feedback. Finally, we consider a memoryless state dependent channel with asynchronous side information at both the transmitter and receiver, and establish a single-letter expression for its capacity.

In this paper we use a variation of simulated annealing algorithm for optimizing two-dimensional constellations with 32 signals. The main objective is to maximize the symmetric pragmatic capacity under the peak-power constraint. The method allows the joint optimization of constellation and binary labeling. We also investigate the performance of the optimized constellation over nonlinear satellite channel under additive white Gaussian noise. We consider the performance over systems with and without pre-distorters. In both cases the optimized constellations perform considerably better than the conventional Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) modulations, used in the current digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-S2) on satellite channels. Based on our optimized constellations, we also propose a new labeling for the 4+12+16-APSK constellation of the DVB-S2 standard which is Gray over all rings.
In this paper, we propose two schemes for asynchronous multi-relay two-way relay (MR-TWR) systems in which neither the users nor the relays know the channel state information (CSI). In an MR-TWR system, two users exchange their messages with the help of $N_R$ relays. Most of the existing works on MR-TWR systems based on differential modulation assume perfect symbol-level synchronization between all communicating nodes. However, this assumption is not valid in many practical systems, which makes the design of differentially modulated schemes more challenging. Therefore, we design differential modulation schemes that can tolerate timing misalignment under frequency-selective fading. We investigate the performance of the proposed schemes in terms of either probability of bit error or pairwise error probability. Through numerical examples, we show that the proposed schemes outperform existing competing solutions in the literature, especially for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values.
Recent advances in DNA sequencing technology and DNA storage systems have rekindled the interest in deletion channels. Multiple recent works have looked at variants of sequence reconstruction over a single and over multiple deletion channels, a notor iously difficult problem due to its highly combinatorial nature. Although works in theoretical computer science have provided algorithms which guarantee perfect reconstruction with multiple independent observations from the deletion channel, they are only applicable in the large blocklength regime and more restrictively, when the number of observations is also large. Indeed, with only a few observations, perfect reconstruction of the input sequence may not even be possible in most cases. In such situations, maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum aposteriori (MAP) estimates for the deletion channels are natural questions that arise and these have remained open to the best of our knowledge. In this work, we take steps to answer the two aforementioned questions. Specifically: 1. We show that solving for the ML estimate over the single deletion channel (which can be cast as a discrete optimization problem) is equivalent to solving its relaxation, a continuous optimization problem; 2. We exactly compute the symbolwise posterior distributions (under some assumptions on the priors) for both the single as well as multiple deletion channels. As part of our contributions, we also introduce tools to visualize and analyze error events, which we believe could be useful in other related problems concerning deletion channels.
The zero-error feedback capacity of the Gelfand-Pinsker channel is established. It can be positive even if the channels zero-error capacity is zero in the absence of feedback. Moreover, the error-free transmission of a single bit may require more tha n one channel use. These phenomena do not occur when the state is revealed to the transmitter causally, a case that is solved here using Shannon strategies. Cost constraints on the channel inputs or channel states are also discussed, as is the scenario where---in addition to the message---also the state sequence must be recovered.
This paper investigates delay-distortion-power trade offs in transmission of quasi-stationary sources over block fading channels by studying encoder and decoder buffering techniques to smooth out the source and channel variations. Four source and cha nnel coding schemes that consider buffer and power constraints are presented to minimize the reconstructed source distortion. The first one is a high performance scheme, which benefits from optimized source and channel rate adaptation. In the second scheme, the channel coding rate is fixed and optimized along with transmission power with respect to channel and source variations; hence this scheme enjoys simplicity of implementation. The two last schemes have fixed transmission power with optimized adaptive or fixed channel coding rate. For all the proposed schemes, closed form solutions for mean distortion, optimized rate and power are provided and in the high SNR regime, the mean distortion exponent and the asymptotic mean power gains are derived. The proposed schemes with buffering exploit the diversity due to source and channel variations. Specifically, when the buffer size is limited, fixed channel rate adaptive power scheme outperforms an adaptive rate fixed power scheme. Furthermore, analytical and numerical results demonstrate that with limited buffer size, the system performance in terms of reconstructed signal SNR saturates as transmission power is increased, suggesting that appropriate buffer size selection is important to achieve a desired reconstruction quality.
