A number of elite thinkers in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries pursued an agenda which historian Paolo Rossi calls the quest for a universal language, a quest which was deeply interwoven with the emergence of the scientific method. From a modern perspective, one of the many surprising aspects of these efforts is that they relied on a diverse array of memorization techniques as foundational elements. In the case of Leibnizs universal calculus, the ultimate vision was to create a pictorial language that could be learned by anyone in a matter of weeks and which would contain within it a symbolic representation of all domains of contemporary thought, ranging from the natural sciences, to theology, to law. In this brief article, I explore why this agenda might have been appealing to thinkers of this era by examining ancient and modern memory feats. As a thought experiment, I suggest that a society built entirely upon memorization might be less limited than we might otherwise imagine, and furthermore, that cultural norms discouraging the use of written language might have had implications for the development of scientific methodology. Viewed in this light, the efforts of Leibniz and others seem significantly less surprising. I close with some general observations about cross-cultural origins of scientific thought.

With Cyrano, Voltaire, and Verne, France provided important milestones in the history of early science fiction. However, even if the genre was not very common a few centuries ago, there were numerous additional contributions by French-speaking writer s. In this paper, we review two cases of interplanetary novels written in the second half of the eighteenth century and sharing a rare particularity: their authors were female. Voyages de Milord Ceton was imagined by Marie-Anne de Roumier-Robert whereas Cornelie Wouters de Wasse conceived Le Char Volant. While their personal lives were very different, and their writing style too, both authors share in these novels a common philosophy in which equality -- between ranks but also between genders -- takes an important place. Their works thus clearly fit into the context of the Enlightenment.
Initially defined by the IAU in 1958, the galactic coordinate system was thereafter in 1984 transformed from the B1950.0 FK4-based system to the J2000.0 FK5-based system. In 1994, the IAU recommended that the dynamical reference system FK5 be replace d by the ICRS, which is a kinematical non-rotating system defined by a set of remote radio sources. However the definition of the galactic coordinate system was not updated. We consider that the present galactic coordinates may be problematic due to the unrigorous transformation method from the FK4 to the FK5, and due to the non-inertiality of the FK5 system with respect to the ICRS. This has led to some confusions in applications of the galactic coordinates. We tried to find the transformation matrix in the framework of the ICRS after carefully investigating the definition of the galactic coordinate system and transformation procedures, however we could not find a satisfactory galactic coordinate system that is connected steadily to the ICRS. To avoid unnecessary misunderstandings, we suggest to re-consider the definition of the galactic coordinate system which should be directly connected with the ICRS for high precise observation at micro-arcsecond level.
The temporal statistics exhibited by written correspondence appear to be media dependent, with features which have so far proven difficult to characterize. We explain the origin of these difficulties by disentangling the role of spontaneous activity from decision-based prioritizing processes in human dynamics, clocking all waiting times through each agents `proper time measured by activity. This unveils the same fundamental patterns in written communication across all media (letters, email, sms), with response times displaying truncated power-law behavior and average exponents near -3/2. When standard time is used, the response time probabilities are theoretically predicted to exhibit a bi-modal character, which is empirically borne out by our new years-long data on email. These novel perspectives on the temporal dynamics of human correspondence should aid in the analysis of interaction phenomena in general, including resource management, optimal pricing and routing, information sharing, emergency handling.
Climate change is a pressing issue that is currently affecting and will affect every part of our lives. Its becoming incredibly vital we, as a society, address the climate crisis as a universal effort, including those in the Computer Vision (CV) comm unity. In this work, we analyze the total cost of CO2 emissions by breaking it into (1) the architecture creation cost and (2) the life-time evaluation cost. We show that over time, these costs are non-negligible and are having a direct impact on our future. Importantly, we conduct an ethical analysis of how the CV-community is unintentionally overlooking its own ethical AI principles by emitting this level of CO2. To address these concerns, we propose adding enforcement as a pillar of ethical AI and provide some recommendations for how architecture designers and broader CV community can curb the climate crisis.
We reconsider a model introducing a scalar leptoquark $phi sim (mathbf{3}, mathbf{1}, -1/3)$ to explain recent deviations from the standard model in semileptonic $B$ decays. The leptoquark can accommodate the persistent tension in the decays $bar{B}r ightarrow D^{(*)}tau bar{ u}$ as long as its mass is lower than approximately $10 text{ TeV}$, and we show that a sizeable Yukawa coupling to the right-chiral tau lepton is necessary for an acceptable explanation. Agreement with the measured $bar{B}rightarrow D^{(*)}tau bar{ u}$ rates is mildly compromised for parameter choices addressing the tensions in $b to s mu mu$, where the model can significantly reduce the discrepancies in angular observables, branching ratios and the lepton-flavor-universality observables $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$. The leptoquark can also reconcile the predicted and measured value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and appears naturally in models of radiative neutrino mass derived from lepton-number violating effective operators. As a representative example, we incorporate the particle into an existing two-loop neutrino mass scenario derived from a dimension-nine operator. In this specific model, the structure of the neutrino mass matrix provides enough freedom to explain the small masses of the neutrinos in the region of parameter space dictated by agreement with the anomalies in $bar{B}rightarrow D^{(*)}tau bar{ u}$, but not the $b to s$ transition. This is achieved without excessive fine-tuning in the parameters important for neutrino mass.
