This paper provides a first example of constructing Lyapunov functions in a class of piecewise linear systems with limit cycles. The method of construction helps analyze and control complex oscillating systems through novel geometric means. Special attention is stressed upon a problem not formerly solved: to impose consistent boundary conditions on the Lyapunov function in each linear region. By successfully solving the problem, the authors construct continuous Lyapunov functions in the whole state space. It is further demonstrated that the Lyapunov functions constructed explain for the different bifurcations leading to the emergence of limit cycle oscillation.

We consider families of piecewise linear maps in which the moduli of the two slopes take different values. In some parameter regions, despite the variations in the dynamics, the Lyapunov exponent and the topological entropy remain constant. We provid e numerical evidence of this fact and we prove it analytically for some special cases. The mechanism is very different from that of the logistic map and we conjecture that the Lyapunov plateaus reflect arithmetic relations between the slopes.
Piecewise-Linear in Rates (PWLR) Lyapunov functions are introduced for a class of Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs). In addition to their simple structure, these functions are robust with respect to arbitrary monotone reaction rates, of which mass-ac tion is a special case. The existence of such functions ensures the convergence of trajectories towards equilibria, and guarantee their asymptotic stability with respect to the corresponding stoichiometric compatibility class. We give the definition of these Lyapunov functions, prove their basic properties, and provide algorithms for constructing them. Examples are provided, relationship with consensus dynamics are discussed, and future directions are elaborated.
We propose a learning-based method for Lyapunov stability analysis of piecewise affine dynamical systems in feedback with piecewise affine neural network controllers. The proposed method consists of an iterative interaction between a learner and a ve rifier, where in each iteration, the learner uses a collection of samples of the closed-loop system to propose a Lyapunov function candidate as the solution to a convex program. The learner then queries the verifier, which solves a mixed-integer program to either validate the proposed Lyapunov function candidate or reject it with a counterexample, i.e., a state where the stability condition fails. This counterexample is then added to the sample set of the learner to refine the set of Lyapunov function candidates. We design the learner and the verifier based on the analytic center cutting-plane method, in which the verifier acts as the cutting-plane oracle to refine the set of Lyapunov function candidates. We show that when the set of Lyapunov functions is full-dimensional in the parameter space, the overall procedure finds a Lyapunov function in a finite number of iterations. We demonstrate the utility of the proposed method in searching for quadratic and piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions.
The scaling behavior of the maximal Lyapunov exponent in chaotic systems with time-delayed feedback is investigated. For large delay times it has been shown that the delay-dependence of the exponent allows a distinction between strong and weak chaos, which are the analogy to strong and weak instability of periodic orbits in a delay system. We find significant differences between scaling of exponents in periodic or chaotic systems. We show that chaotic scaling is related to fluctuations in the linearized equations of motion. A linear delay system including multiplicative noise shows the same properties as the deterministic chaotic systems.

We use the weight $delta$I, deduced from the estimation of Lyapunov vectors, in order to characterise regions in the kinetic (x, v) space with particles that most contribute to chaoticity. For the paradigmatic model, the cosine Hamiltonian mean field model, we show that this diagnostic highlights the vicinity of the separatrix, even when the latter hardly exists.
