We evaluate the rating system of Heroes of Newerth (HoN), a multiplayer online action role-playing game, by using statistical analysis and comparison of a players in-game performance metrics and the player rating assigned by the rating system. The datasets for the analysis have been extracted from the web sites that record the players ratings and a number of empirical metrics. Results suggest that the HoNs Matchmaking rating algorithm, while generally capturing the skill level of the player well, also has weaknesses, which have been exploited by players to achieve a higher placement on the ranking ladder than deserved by actual skill. In addition, we also illustrate the effects of the choice of the business model (from pay-to-play to free-to-play) on player population.

This paper is to analyze the properties of evolving bipartite networks from four aspects, the growth of networks, the degree distribution, the popularity of objects and the diversity of user behaviours, leading a deep understanding on the empirical d ata. By empirical studies of data from the online bookstore Amazon and a question and answer site Stack Overflow, which are both rating bipartite networks, we could reveal the rules for the evolution of bipartite networks. These rules have significant meanings in practice for maintaining the operation of real systems and preparing for their future development. We find that the degree distribution of users follows a power law with an exponential cutoff. Also, according to the evolution of popularity for objects, we find that the large-degree objects tend to receive more new ratings than expected depending on their current degrees while the small-degree objects receive less ratings in terms of their degrees. Moreover, the user behaviours show such a trend that the larger degree the users have, the stronger purposes are with their behaviours except the initial periods when users choose a diversity of products to learn about what they want. Finally, we conclude with a discussion on how the bipartite network evolves, which provides guideline for meeting challenges brought by the growth of network.

Here we developed a new conceptual, stochastic Heterogeneous Opinion-Status model (HOpS model), which is adaptive network model. The HOpS model admits to identify the main attributes of dynamics on networks and to study analytically the relation betw een topological network properties and processes taking place on a network. Another key point of the HOpS model is the possibility to study network dynamics via the novel parameter of heterogeneity. We show that not only clear topological network properties, such as node degree, but also, the nodes status distribution (the factor of network heterogeneity) play an important role in so-called opinion spreading and information diffusion on a network. This model can be potentially used for studying the co-evolution of globally aggregated or averaged key observables of the earth system. These include natural variables such as atmospheric, oceanic and land carbon stocks, as well as socio-economic quantities such as global human population, economic production or wellbeing.
In this paper we apply techniques of complex network analysis to data sources representing public funding programs and discuss the importance of the considered indicators for program evaluation. Starting from the Open Data repository of the 2007-2013 Italian Program Programma Operativo Nazionale Ricerca e Competitivit`a (PON R&C), we build a set of data models and perform network analysis over them. We discuss the obtained experimental results outlining interesting new perspectives that emerge from the application of the proposed methods to the socio-economical evaluation of funded programs.

In this work we consider the topological analysis of symbolic formal systems in the framework of network theory. In particular we analyse the network extracted by Principia Mathematica of B. Russell and A.N. Whitehead, where the vertices are the stat ements and two statements are connected with a directed link if one statement is used to demonstrate the other one. We compare the obtained network with other directed acyclic graphs, such as a scientific citation network and a stochastic model. We also introduce a novel topological ordering for directed acyclic graphs and we discuss its properties in respect to the classical one. The main result is the observation that formal systems of knowledge topologically behave similarly to self-organised systems.
In their recent work Scale-free networks are rare, Broido and Clauset address the problem of the analysis of degree distributions in networks to classify them as scale-free at different strengths of scale-freeness. Over the last two decades, a multit ude of papers in network science have reported that the degree distributions in many real-world networks follow power laws. Such networks were then referred to as scale-free. However, due to a lack of a precise definition, the term has evolved to mean a range of different things, leading to confusion and contradictory claims regarding scale-freeness of a given network. Recognizing this problem, the authors of Scale-free networks are rare try to fix it. They attempt to develop a versatile and statistically principled approach to remove this scale-free ambiguity accumulated in network science literature. Although their paper presents a fair attempt to address this fundamental problem, we must bring attention to some important issues in it.
