Ultrafast optical spectroscopy is used to study the antiferromagnetic f-electron system USb2. We observe the opening of two charge gaps at low temperatures (<45 K), arising from renormalization of the electronic structure. Analysis of our data indicates that one gap is due to hybridization between localized f-electron and conduction electron bands, while band renormalization involving magnons leads to the emergence of the second gap. These experiments thus enable us to shed light on the complex electronic structure emerging at the Fermi surface in f-electron systems.

The real part of the optical in-plane conductivity of p-- and n--type cuprates thin films at various doping levels was deduced from highly accurate reflectivity measurements. We present here a comprehensive set of optical spectral weight data as a fu nction of the temperature $T (> T_c$), for underdoped and overdoped samples. The temperature dependence of the spectral weight is not universal. Using various cut-off frequencies for the spectral weight, we show that n--type Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and p--type Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+delta}$ exhibit both similarities and striking differences. The Fermi surface is closed in overdoped metallic samples. In underdoped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ samples, it clearly breaks into arcs, giving rise to a pseudogap signature. It is argued that such a signature is subtle in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+delta}$.
A central prospect of antiferromagnetic spintronics is to exploit magnetic properties that are unavailable with ferromagnets. However, this poses the challenge of accessing such properties for readout and control. To this end, light-induced manipulat ion of the transient ground state, e.g. by changing the magnetic anisotropy potential, opens promising pathways towards ultrafast deterministic control of antiferromagnetism. Here, we use this approach to trigger a $it{coherent}$ rotation of the entire long-range antiferromagnetic spin arrangement about a crystalline axis in $GdRh_2Si_2$ and demonstrate $it{deterministic}$ control of this rotation upon ultrafast optical excitation. Our observations can be explained by a displacive excitation of the Gd spins$$ local anisotropy potential by the optical excitation, allowing for a full description of this transient magnetic anisotropy potential.
The correlated electronic structure of SrVO3 has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using in-situ prepared thin films. Pronounced features of band renormalization have been observed: a sharp kink ~60 meV below the Fermi le vel (EF) and a broad so-called high-energy kink ~0.3 eV below EF as in the high-Tc cuprates although SrVO3 does not show magnetic fluctuations. We have deduced the self-energy in a wide energy range by applying the Kramers-Kronig relation to the observed spectra. The obtained self-energy clearly shows a large energy scale of ~0.7 eV which is attributed to electron-electron interaction and gives rise to the ~0.3 eV kink in the band dispersion as well as the incoherent peak ~1.5eV below EF. The present analysis enables us to obtain consistent picture both for the incoherent spectra and the band renormalization.
We report on the electronic structure of the perovskite oxide CaCrO3 using valence-band, core-level, and Cr 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Despite its antiferromagnetic order, a clear Fermi edge characteristic of a metal with domi nant Cr 3d character is observed in the valence band spectrum. The Cr 3d single particle density of states are spread over 2 eV, with the photoemission spectral weight distributed in two peaks centered at ~ 1.2 eV and 0.2 eV below EF, suggestive of the coherent and incoherent states resulting from strong electron-electron correlations. Resonant PES across the Cr 2p - 3d threshold identifies a two-hole correlation satellite and yields an on-site Coulomb energy U ~4.8 eV. The metallic DOS at EF is also reflected through the presence of a well-screened feature at low binding energy side of the Cr 2p core-level spectrum. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at Cr L3,2 and O K edges exhibit small temperature dependent changes that point towards a small change in Cr-O hybridization. The multiplet splitting in Cr 2p core level spectrum as well as the spectral shape of the Cr XAS can be reproduced using cluster model calculations which favour a negative value for charge transfer energy between the Cr 3d and O 2p states. The overall results indicate that CaCrO3 is a strongly hybridized antiferromagnetic metal, lying in the regime intermediate to Mott-Hubbard and charge-transfer systems.
The optical conductivity $sigma_{1}(omega)$ of Eu$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$B$_{6}$ has been obtained from reflectivity and ellipsometry measurements for series of compositions, $0leq xleq 1$. The interband part of $sigma_{1}(omega) $ shifts continuously to hig her frequency as Ca-content $x$ increases. Also the intraband spectral weight of $sigma_{1}(omega)$ decreases rapidly and essentially vanishes for $xgeq x_{c}=0.35$. These results show that the valence band and the conduction band of Eu$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$B$_{6}$ move away from each other such that their band overlap decreases with increasing Ca-substitution. As a result, the electronic state evolves from the semimetallic structure of EuB$_{6}$ to the insulating CaB$_{6}$ where the two bands are separated to open a finite gap ($simeq 0.25$ eV) at the X-point of the Brillouin zone.
