We present adaptive optics-assisted J- and K-band integral field spectroscopy of the inner 300 x 300 pc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068. The data were obtained with the Gemini NIFS integral field unit spectrometer, which provided us with high-spatial and -spectral resolution sampling. The wavelength range covered by the observations allowed us to study the [CaVIII], [SiVI], [SiVII], [AlIX] and [SIX] coronal-line (CL) emission, covering ionization potentials up to 328 eV. The observations reveal very rich and complex structures, both in terms of velocity fields and emission-line ratios. The CL emission is elongated along the NE-SW direction, with the stronger emission preferentially localized to the NE of the nucleus. CLs are emitted by gas covering a wide range of velocities, with maximum blueshifts/redshifts of ~ -1600/1000 km/s. There is a trend for the gas located on the NE side of the nucleus to be blueshifted while the gas located towards the SW is redshifted. The morphology and the kinematics of the near-infrared CLs are in very good agreement with the ones displayed by low-ionization lines and optical CLs, suggesting a common origin. The line flux distributions, velocity maps, ionization structure (traced by the [SiVII]/[SiVI] emission-line ratio) and low ionization emission-line ratios (i.e., [FeII]/Pabeta and [FeII]/[PII]) suggest that the radio jet plays an important role in the structure of the coronal line region of this object, and possibly in its kinematics.

We present first results of near infrared J and H+K ESO-SINFONI integral field spectroscopy of the composite starburst/Seyfert 1.8 galaxy Mrk 609. The data were taken during the science verification period of SINFONI. We aim to investigate the morpho logy and excitation conditions within the central 2 kpc. Additional Nobeyama 45 m CO(1-0) data are presented, which we used to estimate the molecular gas mass. The source was selected from a sample of adaptive optics suitable, SDSS/ROSAT based, X-ray bright AGN with redshifts of 0.03 < z < 1. This sample allows for a detailed study of the NIR properties of the nuclear and host environments with high spectral and spatial resolution. Our NIR data reveal a complex emission-line morphology, possibly associated with a nuclear bar seen in the reconstructed continuum images. The detections of [SiVI] and a broad Pa alpha component are clear indicators for the presence of an accreting super-massive black hole at the center of Mrk 609. In agreement with previous observations we find that the circum-nuclear emission is not significantly extincted. The analysis of the high angular resolution rotational-vibrational molecular hydrogen and forbidden [FeII] emission reveals a LINER character of the nucleus. The large H_2 gas mass deduced from the CO(1-0) observation provides the fuel needed to feed the starburst and Seyfert activity in Mrk 609. High angular resolution imaging spectroscopy provides an ideal tool to resolve the nuclear and starburst contribution in active galaxies. We show that Mrk 609 exhibits LINER features, that appear to be hidden in larger aperture visible/NIR spectra.
(Abridge) The relationship between coronal line (CL) emission and nuclear activity in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is analyzed, for the first time, based on NIR spectra. The 8 CLs studied, of Si, S, Fe, Al and Ca elements and corresponding to ioniza tion potentials (IP) in the range 125-450 eV, are detected in 67% (36 AGNs) of the sample. The four most frequent CLs - [SiVI] 19630AA, [SVIII] 9913AA, [SIX] 12520AA and [SiX] 14320AA, - display a narrow range in luminosity, with most lines located in the interval logL 39-40 erg/s. We found that the non-detection is largely associated with either a lost of spatial resolution or increasing object distance. Yet, there are AGNs where the lack of CLs may be genuine and reflect an AGN ionising continuum lacking photons below a few keV. The FWHM of the lines profiles increases with increasing IP up to energies around 300 eV, where a maximum in the FWHM is reached. For higher IP lines, the FWHM remains nearly constant or decreases with increasing IP. We ascribe this effect to an increasing density environment as we approach to the innermost regions of the AGN, where densities above the critical density of the CLs with IP larger than 300 eV are reached. This sets a strict range limit for the density in the boundary region between the narrow and the broad region of 10^8 - 10^9 cm^{-3}. A relationship between the luminosity of the coronal lines and that of the soft and hard X-ray emission and the soft X-ray photon index is observed: the coronal emission becomes stronger with both increasing x-ray emission (soft and hard) and steeper X-ray photon index. Thus, photoionization appears as the dominant excitation mechanism. These trends hold when considering Type 1 sources only; they get weaker or vanish when including Type 2 sources, very likely because the X-ray emission measured in the later is not the intrinsic ionising continuum.
In this paper we present PMAS optical (3800-7200A) IFS of the northern hemisphere portion of a volume-limited sample of 11 LIRGs. The PMAS observations typically cover the central ~5kpc and are complemented with HST/NICMOS images. For most LIRGs in o ur sample, the peaks of the continuum and gas (e.g., Halpha, [NII]) emissions coincide, unlike what is observed in local, strongly interacting ULIRGs. The only exceptions are galaxies with circumnuclear rings of star formation where the most luminous Halpha emitting regions are found in the rings rather than in the nuclei, and the displacements are well understood in terms of differences in the stellar populations. A large fraction of the nuclei of these LIRGs are classified as LINER and intermediate LINER/HII, or composite objects. The excitation conditions of the integrated emission depend on the relative contributions of HII regions and the diffuse emission to the line emission over the PMAS FoV. Galaxies dominated by high surface-brightness HII regions show integrated HII-like excitation. A few galaxies show slightly larger integrated [NII]/Halpha and [SII]/Halpha line ratios than the nuclear ones, probably because of more contribution from the diffuse emission. The Halpha velocity fields over the central few kpc are generally consistent, at least to first order, with rotational motions. The velocity fields of most LIRGs are similar to those of disk galaxies, in contrast to the highly perturbed fields of most local, strongly interacting ULIRGs. The peak of the Halpha velocity dispersion coincides with the position of the nucleus and is likely to be tracing mass. All these results are similar to the properties of z~1 LIRGs, and they highlight the importance of detailed studies of flux-limited samples of local LIRGs. (Abridged)

We present Gemini integral field spectroscopy and Keck II longslit spectroscopy of the extended emission-line region (EELR) around the quasar 4C 37.43. The velocity structure of the ionized gas is complex and cannot be explained globally by a simple dynamical model. The spectra from the clouds are inconsistent with shock or ``shock + precursor ionization models, but they are consistent with photoionization by the quasar nucleus. The best-fit photoionization model requires a low-metallicity (12+log(O/H) < 8.7) two-phase medium, consisting of a matter-bounded diffuse component with a unity filling-factor (N ~ 1 cc, T ~ 15000 K), in which are embedded small, dense clouds (N ~ 400 cc, T ~ 10^4 K). The high-density clouds are transient and can be re-generated through compressing the diffuse medium by low-speed shocks (V_S lesssim 100 kms). Our photoionization model gives a total mass for the ionized gas of about 3x10^{10} M_sun, and the total kinetic energy implied by this mass and the observed velocity field is ~2x10^{58} ergs. The fact that luminous EELRs are confined to steep-spectrum radio-loud quasars, yet show no morphological correspondence to the radio jets, suggests that the driving force producing the 4C 37.43 EELR was a roughly spherical blast wave initiated by the production of the jet. That such a mechanism seems capable of ejecting a mass comparable to that of the total interstellar medium of the Milky Way suggests that ``quasar-mode feedback may indeed be an efficient means of regulating star formation in the early universe.

We present Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph integral field spectroscopy of the extended emission-line region associated with quasar 3C 249.1. The kinematics of the ionized gas measured from the [O III] $lambda$5007 line is rather complex and cannot be explained globally by a simple dynamical model, but some clouds can be modeled individually as having locally linear velocity gradients. The temperatures of the ionized gas appear uniform (varying from ~12000 to 15000 K), while the densities vary from a few tens to a few hundreds cm^{-3}. The emission mechanism of all of the emission clouds, as indicated by the line-ratio diagnostics, is consistent both with shock + precursor and pure photoionization models. The total mass of the ionized gas is on the order of 10^9 M_Sun. We estimate the bulk kinetic energy and momentum of the extended emission-line region of 2.5*10^{57} ergs and 10^{50} dyne s, and a dynamical timescale of ~10 Myr. By comparing the injection rates of kinetic energy and momentum of different galactic wind models with the observation, we argue that the emission-line clouds are most likely a direct result from the feedback of the quasar. We also discuss the nature of the extended X-ray emission surrounding the quasar.
