Segmentation of medical images is a challenging task owing to their complexity. A standard segmentation problem within Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the task of labeling voxels according to their tissue type. Image segmentation provides volumetric quantification of liver area and thus helps in the diagnosis of disorders, such as Hepatitis, Cirrhosis, Jaundice, Hemochromatosis etc. This work deals with comparison of segmentation by applying Level Set Method,Fuzzy Level Information C-Means Clustering Algorithm and Gradient Vector Flow Snake Algorithm. The results are compared using the parameters such as Number of pixels correctly classified, and percentage of area segmented.

Automatic segmentation of the liver and hepatic lesions is an important step towards deriving quantitative biomarkers for accurate clinical diagnosis and computer-aided decision support systems. This paper presents a method to automatically segment l iver and lesions in CT and MRI abdomen images using cascaded fully convolutional neural networks (CFCNs) enabling the segmentation of a large-scale medical trial or quantitative image analysis. We train and cascade two FCNs for a combined segmentation of the liver and its lesions. In the first step, we train a FCN to segment the liver as ROI input for a second FCN. The second FCN solely segments lesions within the predicted liver ROIs of step 1. CFCN models were trained on an abdominal CT dataset comprising 100 hepatic tumor volumes. Validations on further datasets show that CFCN-based semantic liver and lesion segmentation achieves Dice scores over 94% for liver with computation times below 100s per volume. We further experimentally demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method on an 38 MRI liver tumor volumes and the public 3DIRCAD dataset.
Automatic segmentation of hepatic lesions in computed tomography (CT) images is a challenging task to perform due to heterogeneous, diffusive shape of tumors and complex background. To address the problem more and more researchers rely on assistance of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) with 2D or 3D type architecture that have proven to be effective in a wide range of computer vision tasks, including medical image processing. In this technical report, we carry out research focused on more careful approach to the process of learning rather than on complex architecture of the CNN. We have chosen MICCAI 2017 LiTS dataset for training process and the public 3DIRCADb dataset for validation of our method. The proposed algorithm reached DICE score 78.8% on the 3DIRCADb dataset. The described method was then applied to the 2019 Kidney Tumor Segmentation (KiTS-2019) challenge, where our single submission achieved 96.38% for kidney and 67.38% for tumor Dice scores.
In this work, we report the set-up and results of the Liver Tumor Segmentation Benchmark (LITS) organized in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2016 and International Conference On Medical Image Computing C omputer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2017. Twenty four valid state-of-the-art liver and liver tumor segmentation algorithms were applied to a set of 131 computed tomography (CT) volumes with different types of tumor contrast levels (hyper-/hypo-intense), abnormalities in tissues (metastasectomie) size and varying amount of lesions. The submitted algorithms have been tested on 70 undisclosed volumes. The dataset is created in collaboration with seven hospitals and research institutions and manually reviewed by independent three radiologists. We found that not a single algorithm performed best for liver and tumors. The best liver segmentation algorithm achieved a Dice score of 0.96(MICCAI) whereas for tumor segmentation the best algorithm evaluated at 0.67(ISBI) and 0.70(MICCAI). The LITS image data and manual annotations continue to be publicly available through an online evaluation system as an ongoing benchmarking resource.

Whole-brain surface extraction is an essential topic in medical imaging systems as it provides neurosurgeons with a broader view of surgical planning and abnormality detection. To solve the problem confronted in current deep learning skull stripping methods lacking prior shape information, we propose a new network architecture that incorporates knowledge of signed distance fields and introduce an additional Laplacian loss to ensure that the prediction results retain shape information. We validated our newly proposed method by conducting experiments on our brain magnetic resonance imaging dataset (111 patients). The evaluation results demonstrate that our approach achieves comparable dice scores and also reduces the Hausdorff distance and average symmetric surface distance, thus producing more stable and smooth brain isosurfaces.
Primary tumors have a high likelihood of developing metastases in the liver and early detection of these metastases is crucial for patient outcome. We propose a method based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) to detect liver metastases. First, th e liver was automatically segmented using the six phases of abdominal dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MR images. Next, DCE-MR and diffusion weighted (DW) MR images are used for metastases detection within the liver mask. The liver segmentations have a median Dice similarity coefficient of 0.95 compared with manual annotations. The metastases detection method has a sensitivity of 99.8% with a median of 2 false positives per image. The combination of the two MR sequences in a dual pathway network is proven valuable for the detection of liver metastases. In conclusion, a high quality liver segmentation can be obtained in which we can successfully detect liver metastases.
