Predicting the transition temperature, Tc, of a superconductor from Periodic Table normal state properties is regarded as one of the grand challenges of superconductivity. By studying the correlations of Periodic Table properties with known superconductors, it is possible to estimate their transition temperatures. Starting from the isotope effect and correlations of superconductivity with electronegativity (Chi), valence electron count per atom (Ne), atomic number(Z) and formula weight (Fw), we derive an empirical formula for estimating Tc that includes an unknown parameter,(Ko). With average values of Chi, Ne and Z, we develop a material specific characterization dataset (MSCD) model of a superconductor that is quantitatively useful for characterizing and comparing superconductors. We show that for most superconductors, Ko correlates with Fw/Z, Ne, Z, number of atoms (An) in the formula, number of elements (En) and with Tc. We study some superconductor families and use the discovered correlations to predict similar and novel superconductors and also estimate their Tcs. Thus the material specific equations derived in this paper, the material specific characterization dataset (MSCD) system developed here and the discovered correlation between Tc and Fw/Z, En and An, provide the building blocks for the analysis, design and search of potential novel high temperature superconductors with specific estimated Tcs.

We show that the dependence of the total energy of the atoms on their atomic number follows a q-exponential (function proposed by C. Tsallis), for almost all elements of the periodic table. The result is qualitatively explained in terms of the way th e atomic configurations are arranged to minimize energy.

A modification of the standard periodic table of the elements reveals $4n^{2}$ periods, where $n=2,3,dots$. The new arrangement places hydrogen with halogens and keeps the rare-earth elements in the table proper (without separating them as they are i n the standard table). Effectively, periods in the modified table are defined by the halogens rather than by the noble gases. The graph of ionization energy of the elements is presented for comparison of periods in the standard and the modified tables.

We have investigated the electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of PdTe2 and 4% Cu intercalated PdTe2 compounds. Electrical resistivity for the compounds shows Bloch-Gruneisen type linear temperature (T) dependence for 1 00 K < T < 480 K, and Fermi liquid behavior (~ T^2) below 50 K. Seebeck coefficient data exhibit strong competition between Normal (N) and Umklapp (U) scattering processes at low T. Though our results indicate the transfer of charge carriers to PdTe2 upon Cu intercalation, it is difficult to discern any change in the Fermi surface of the compound by Nordheim-Gorter plots. The estimated Fermi energies of the compounds are quite comparable to good metals Cu, Ag and Au. The low T, thermal conductivity (k) of the compounds is strongly dominated by the electronic contribution, and exhibits a rare linear T dependence below 10 K. However, high T, k(T) shows usual 1/T dependence, dominated by U scattering process. The electron phonon coupling parameters, estimated from the low T, specific heat data and first principle electronic structure calculations suggest that PdTe2 and Cu0.04PdTe2 are intermediately coupled superconductors.

An overview of the momentum and frequency dependence of effective electron-electron interactions which favor electronic instability to a superconducting state in the angular-momentum channel $ell$ and the properties of the interactions which determin e $T_c$ is provided. Both interactions induced through exchange of phonons as well as purely electronic fluctuations of spin density, charge density or current density are considered. Special attention is paid to the role of quantum critical fluctuations including pairing due to their virtual exchange as well as de-pairing due to inelastic scattering. In light of the above, empirical data and theory specific to phonon induced superconductivity, in cold atoms, superfluidity in liquid $He^3$, superconductivity in some of the heavy fermion compounds, in Cuprates, in pncitides and the valence skipping compound, is reviewed. The physical basis for the following observation is provided: The universal ratio of s-wave $T_c$ to Fermi-energy for fermions at the unitarity limit with attractive interactions is about 0.15, the ratio of the maximum $T_c$ to the typical phonon frequency in phonon induced s-wave superconductivity is of the same order; the ratio of p-wave $T_c$ to the renormalized Fermi-energy in liquid $He^3$, a very strongly correlated Fermi-liquid near its melting pressure, is only $O(10^{-3})$; in the Cuprates and the heavy-fermions where d-wave superconductivity occurs in a region governed by a special class of quantum-critical fluctuations, this ratio rises to $O(10^{-2})$. These discussions also suggest factors important for obtaining higher $T_c$.
The electronic and magnetic properties of the new hydride superconductor CaFeAsH, which superconducts up to 47 K when electron-doped with La, and the isovalent alloy system CaFeAsH$_{1-x}$F$_x$ are investigated using density functional based methods. The $vec Q = (pi,pi,0)$ peak of the nesting function $xi(vec q)$ is found to be extremely strong and sharp, and additional structure in $xi(vec q)$ associated with the near-circular Fermi surfaces (FSs) that may impact low energy excitations is quantified. The unusual band introduced by H, which shows strong dispersion perpendicular to the FeAs layers, is shown to be connected to a peculiar van Hove singularity just below the Fermi level. This band provides a three dimensional electron ellipsoid Fermi surface not present in other Fe-based superconducting materials nor in CaFeAsF. Electron doping by 25% La or Co has minor affect on this ellipsoid Fermi surface, but suppresses FS nesting strongly, consistent with the viewpoint that eliminating strong nesting and the associated magnetic order allows high T$_c$ superconductivity to emerge. Various aspects of the isovalent alloy system CaFeAsH$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and means of electron doping are discussed in terms of influence of incipient bands.
