We investigate fundamental processes that govern dynamics of vortex nucleation in sub-100 nm mesoscopic magnets. We focus on a structure with broken symmetry - Pacman-like nanomagnet shape - in which we study micromagnetic behavior both by means of a simple model and numerically. We show that it is possible to establish desired vortex chirality and polarity by applying only quasi-static in-plane magnetic field along specific directions. We identify the modes of vortex nucleation that are very robust against external magnetic field noise. These vortex nucleation modes are common among wide range of sub-100 nm magnets with broken rotational symmetry.

Stacked spin-vortex pairs in magnetic multilayered nanopillars, with vertical separation between the vortices small compared to the vortex core size, exhibit spin dynamics absent in individual vortices. This dynamics is nonlinear and is due to the st rong direct core-core coupling in the system, dominating energetically for small- signal excitation. We observe and explain the appearance of spin resonance modes, forbidden within linear dynamics, and discuss how they depend on the magnetic and morphological asymmetries in the samples.
Near-infrared magneto-optical spectroscopy of single-walled carbon nanotubes reveals two absorption peaks with an equal strength at high magnetic fields ($>$ 55 T). We show that the peak separation is determined by the Aharonov-Bohm phase due to the tube-threading magnetic flux, which breaks the time-reversal symmetry and lifts the valley degeneracy. This field-induced symmetry breaking thus overcomes the Coulomb-induced intervalley mixing which is predicted to make the lowest exciton state optically inactive (or ``dark).
Recently discovered exotic magnetic configurations, namely magnetic solitons appearing in the presence of bulk or interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (i-DMI), have excited scientists to explore their potential applications in emerging spint ronic technologies such as race-track magnetic memory, spin logic, radio frequency nano-oscillators and sensors. Such studies are motivated by their foreseeable advantages over conventional micro-magnetic structures due to their small size, topological stability and easy spin-torque driven manipulation with much lower threshold current densities giving way to improved storage capacity, and faster operation with efficient use of energy. In this work, we show that in the presence of i-DMI in Pt/CoFeB/Ti multilayers by tuning the magnetic anisotropy (both in-plane and perpendicular-to-plane) via interface engineering and postproduction treatments, we can stabilize a variety of magnetic configurations such as Neel skyrmions, horseshoes and most importantly for the first time, the recently predicted isolated radial vortices at room temperature and under zero bias field. Especially, the radial vortex state with its absolute convergence to or divergence from a single point can potentially offer exciting new applications such as particle trapping/detrapping in addition to magnetoresistive memories with efficient switching, where the radial vortex state can act as a source of spin-polarized current with radial polarization.
We study the response of a weakly damped vibrational mode of a nanostring resonator to a moderately strong resonant driving force. Because of the geometry of the experiment, the studied flexural vibrations lack inversion symmetry. As we show, this le ads to a nontrivial dependence of the vibration amplitude on the force parameters. For a comparatively weak force, the response has the familiar Duffing form, but for a somewhat stronger force, it becomes significantly different. Concurrently there emerge vibrations at twice the drive frequency, a signature of the broken symmetry. Their amplitude and phase allow us to establish the cubic nonlinearity of the potential of the mode as the mechanism responsible for both observations. The developed theory goes beyond the standard rotating-wave approximation. It quantitatively describes the experiment and allows us to determine the nonlinearity parameters.

Comprehensive control of the domain wall nucleation process is crucial for spin-based emerging technologies ranging from random-access and storage-class memories over domain-wall logic concepts to nanomagnetic logic. In this work, focused Ga+ ion-irr adiation is investigated as an effective means to control domain-wall nucleation in Ta/CoFeB/MgO nanostructures. We show that analogously to He+ irradiation, it is not only possible to reduce the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy but also to increase it significantly, enabling new, bidirectional manipulation schemes. First, the irradiation effects are assessed on film level, sketching an overview of the dose-dependent changes in the magnetic energy landscape. Subsequent time-domain nucleation characteristics of irradiated nanostructures reveal substantial increases in the anisotropy fields but surprisingly small effects on the measured energy barriers, indicating shrinking nucleation volumes. Spatial control of the domain wall nucleation point is achieved by employing focused irradiation of pre-irradiated magnets, with the diameter of the introduced circular defect controlling the coercivity. Special attention is given to the nucleation mechanisms, changing from a Stoner-Wohlfarth particles coherent rotation to depinning from an anisotropy gradient. Dynamic micromagnetic simulations and related measurements are used in addition to model and analyze this depinning-dominated magnetization reversal.
