We study theoretically the multiferroic dynamics in a composite one-dimensional system consisting of BaTiO3 multiferroically coupled to an iron chain. The method treats the magnetization and the polarization as thermodynamic quantities describable via a combination of the Landau-Lifshits- Gilbert and the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics coupled via an additional term in the total free energy density. This term stems from the multiferroic interaction at the interface. For a wide range of strengths of this coupling we predict the possibility of obtaining a well-developed hysteresis in the ferromagnetic part of the system induced by an external electric field. The dependence of the reversal modes on the electric field frequency is also investigated and we predict a considerable stability of the magnetization reversal for frequencies in the range of 0.5 - 12 [GHz].

In elastically coupled multiferroic heterostructures that exhibit full domain correlations between ferroelectric and ferromagnetic sub-systems, magnetic domain walls are firmly pinned on top of ferroelectric domain boundaries. In this work we investi gate the influence of pinned magnetic domain walls on the magnetization reversal process in a Co40Fe40B20 wedge film that is coupled to a ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate via interface strain transfer. We show that the magnetic field direction can be used to select between two distinct magnetization reversal mechanisms, namely (1) double switching events involving alternate stripe domains at a time or (2) synchronized switching of all domains. Furthermore, scaling of the switching fields with domain width and film thickness is also found to depend on field orientation. These results are explained by considering the dissimilar energies of the two types of pinned magnetic domain walls that are formed in the system.

We demonstrate that the magnetization of a ferromagnet in contact with an antiferromagnetic multiferroic (LuMnO3) can be speedily reversed by electric field pulsing, and the sign of the magnetic exchange bias can switch and recover isothermally. As L uMnO3 is not ferroelastic, our data conclusively show that this switching is not mediated by strain effects but is a unique electric-field driven decoupling of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domains walls. Their distinct dynamics are essential for the observed magnetic switching.
Our results describe an unprecedented example of change in the mechanism of magnetically-induced electric polarization from spin current to spin-dependent p-d hybridization model. We have followed the evolution of the magnetic structures of (ND4)2[Fe Cl5 D2O] compound using single crystal neutron diffraction under external magnetic field. The spin arrangements change from incommensurate cycloidal to commensurate distorted-cycloidal and finally to quasi-collinear. The determination of the magnetic structures allows us to explain the observed electric polarization in the different ferroelectric phases. Two different magneto-electric coupling mechanisms are at play: the spin-current mechanism for external magnetic field below 5 T, and the spin dependent p-d hybridization mechanism for magnetic field above this value, being this compound the first example reported presenting this sequence of magneto-electric coupling mechanisms.
Using a magneto-optical pump-probe technique with micrometer spatial resolution we show that magnetization precession can be launched in individual magnetic domains imprinted in a Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB) layer by elastic coupling to ferroe lectric domains in a BaTiO$_{3}$ substrate. The dependence of the precession parameters on external magnetic field strength and orientation reveal that by laser-induced ultrafast partial quenching of the magnetoelastic coupling parameter of CoFeB by $approx$27% along with 10% ultrafast demagnetization trigger the magnetization precession. The relation between the laser-induced reduction of the magnetoelastic coupling and the demagnetization is approximated by the $n(n+1)/2$-law with n$approx$2. This correspondence confirms the thermal origin of the laser-induced anisotropy change. Based on the analysis and modeling of the excited precession we find signatures of laser-induced precessional switching, which occurs when the magnetic field is applied along the hard magnetization axis and its value is close to the effective magnetoelastic anisotropy field. The precession excitation process in an individual magnetoelastic domain is found to be unaffected by neighboring domains. This makes laser-induced changes of magnetoelastic anisotropy a promising tool for driving magnetization dynamics and switching in composite multiferroics with spatial selectivity.
Magnetic, dielectric and calorimetric studies on 0.9BiFeO3-0.1BaTiO3 indicate strong magnetoelectric coupling. XRD studies reveal a very remarkable change in the rhombohedral distortion angle and a significant shift in the atomic positions at the mag netic Tc due to an isostructural phase transition. The calculated polarization using Rietveld refined atomic positions scales linearly with magnetization. Our results provide the first unambiguous evidence for magnetoelectric coupling of intrinsic multiferroic origin in a BiFeO3 based system.
