We present an implicit solvent model for ab initio electronic structure calculations which is fully self-consistent and is based on direct solution of the nonhomogeneous Poisson equation. The solute cavity is naturally defined in terms of an isosurface of the electronic density according to the formula of Fattebert and Gygi (J. Comp. Chem. 23, 6 (2002)). While this model depends on only two parameters, we demonstrate that by using appropriate boundary conditions and dispersion-repulsion contributions, solvation energies obtained for an extensive test set including neutral and charged molecules show dramatic improvement compared to existing models. Our approach is implemented in, but not restricted to, a linear-scaling density functional theory (DFT) framework, opening the path for self-consistent implicit solvent DFT calculations on systems of unprecedented size, which we demonstrate with calculations on a 2615-atom protein-ligand complex.

We consider a direct optimization approach for ensemble density functional theory electronic structure calculations. The update operator for the electronic orbitals takes the structure of the Stiefel manifold into account and we present an optimizati on scheme for the occupation numbers that ensures that the constraints remain satisfied. We also compare sequential and simultaneous quasi-Newton and nonlinear conjugate gradient optimization procedures, and demonstrate that simultaneous optimization of the electronic orbitals and occupation numbers improve performance compared to the sequential approach.
QMCPACK is an open source quantum Monte Carlo package for ab-initio electronic structure calculations. It supports calculations of metallic and insulating solids, molecules, atoms, and some model Hamiltonians. Implemented real space quantum Monte Car lo algorithms include variational, diffusion, and reptation Monte Carlo. QMCPACK uses Slater-Jastrow type trial wave functions in conjunction with a sophisticated optimizer capable of optimizing tens of thousands of parameters. The orbital space auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method is also implemented, enabling cross validation between different highly accurate methods. The code is specifically optimized for calculations with large numbers of electrons on the latest high performance computing architectures, including multicore central processing unit (CPU) and graphical processing unit (GPU) systems. We detail the programs capabilities, outline its structure, and give examples of its use in current research calculations. The package is available at http://www.qmcpack.org .
We report calculation of the energy spectrum and the spectroscopic properties of the superheavy element ion: Rf^+. We use the 4-component relativistic Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian and the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) model to tackle t he complex electronic structure problem that combines strong relativistic effects and electron correlation. We determine the energies of the ground and the low-lying excited states of Rf+, which originate from the 7s^26d^1, 7s^16d^2, 7s^27p^1, and 7s^16d^17p^1 configurations. The results are discussed vis-`a-vis the lighter homologue, Hf^+ ion. We also assess the uncertainties of the predicted energy levels. The main purpose of the presented calculations is to provide a reliable prediction of the energy levels and to identify suitable metastable excited states that are good candidates for the planned ion-mobility-assisted laser spectroscopy studies.

We consider a minimization scheme based on the Householder transport operator for the Grassman manifold, where a point on the manifold is represented by a m x n matrix with orthonormal columns. In particular, we consider the case where m >> n and pre sent a method with asymptotic complexity mn^2. To avoid explicit parametrization of the manifold we use Householder transforms to move on the manifold, and present a formulation for simultaneous Householder reflections for S-orthonormal columns. We compare a quasi-Newton and nonlinear conjugate gradient implementation adapted to the manifold with a projected nonlinear conjugate gradient method, and demonstrate that the convergence rate is significantly improved if the manifold is taken into account when designing the optimization procedure.
We present SPARC: Simulation Package for Ab-initio Real-space Calculations. SPARC can perform Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations for isolated systems such as molecules as well as extended systems such as crystals and surfaces, in both s tatic and dynamic settings. It is straightforward to install/use and highly competitive with state-of-the-art planewave codes, demonstrating comparable performance on a small number of processors and increasing advantages as the number of processors grows. Notably, SPARC brings solution times down to a few seconds for systems with $mathcal{O}(100-500)$ atoms on large-scale parallel computers, outperforming planewave counterparts by an order of magnitude and more.
