We derive the dynamical structure factor for an inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid as can be formed in a confined strongly interacting one-dimensional gas. In view of current experimental progress in the field, we provide a simple analytic expression for the light-scattering cross section, requiring only the knowledge of the density dependence of the ground-state energy, as they can be extracted e.g. from exact or Quantum Monte Carlo techniques, and a Thomas-Fermi description. We apply the result to the case of one-dimensional quantum bosonic gases with dipolar interaction in a harmonic trap, using an energy functional deduced from Quantum Monte Carlo computations. We find an universal scaling behavior peculiar of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, a signature that can be eventually probed by Bragg spectroscopy in experimental realizations of such systems.

We develop a general framework to compute the scaling of entanglement entropy in inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems belonging to the Luttinger liquid universality class. While much insight has been gained in homogeneous systems by making u se of conformal field theory techniques, our focus is on systems for which the Luttinger parameter $K$ depends on position, and conformal invariance is broken. An important point of our analysis is that contributions stemming from the UV cutoff have to be treated very carefully, since they now depend on position. We show that such terms can be removed either by considering regularized entropies specifically designed to do so, or by tabulating numerically the cutoff, and reconstructing its contribution to the entropy through the local density approximation. We check our method numerically in the spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain in a spatially varying magnetic field, and find excellent agreement.
The light-cone spreading of entanglement and correlation is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of homogeneous extended quantum systems. Here we point out that a class of inhomogenous Luttinger liquids (those with a uniform Luttinger parameter $K$) at low energy display the universal phenomenon of curved light cones: gapless excitations propagate along the geodesics of the metric $ds^2=dx^2+v(x)^2 dtau^2$, with $v(x)$ being the calculable spatial dependent velocity induced by the inhomogeneity. We confirm our findings with explicit analytic and numerical calculations both in- and out-of-equilibrium for a Tonks-Girardeau gas in a harmonic potential and in lattice systems with artificially tuned hamiltonian density.
The concept of Tomonaga--Luttinger liquids (TLL) on the basis of the free-boson models is ubiquitous in theoretical descriptions of low-energy properties in one-dimensional quantum systems. In this work, we develop a squeezed-field path-integral desc ription for gapless one-dimensional systems beyond the free-boson picture of the TLL paradigm. In the squeezed-field description, the parameter of the Bogoliubov transformation for the TL Hamiltonian becomes a dynamical squeezing field, and its fluctuations give rise to corrections to the free-boson results. We derive an effective nonlinear Lagrangian describing the dispersion relation of the squeezing field, and interactions between the excitations of the TLL and the squeezing modes. Using the effective Lagrangian, we analyze the imaginary-time correlation function of a vertex operator in the non-interacting limit. We show that a side-band branch emerges due to the fluctuation of the squeezing field, in addition to the standard branch of the free-boson model of the TLL paradigm. Furthermore, we perturbatively analyze the spectral function of the density fluctuations for an ultracold Bose gas in one dimension. We evaluate the renormalized values of the phase velocities and spectral weights of the TLL and side-band branches due to the interaction between the TLL and the squeezing modes. At zero temperature, the renormalized dispersion relations are linear in the momentum, but at nonzero temperatures, these acquire a nonlinear dependence on the momentum due to the thermal population of the excitation branches.
We present two methods to determine whether the interactions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state of a spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder are attractive or repulsive. The first method combines two bulk measurements, of magnetization and specific heat, to deduce the TLL parameter that distinguishes between the attraction and repulsion. The second one is based on a local-probe, NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation. For the strong-leg spin ladder compound $mathrm{(C_7H_{10}N)_2CuBr_4}$ we find that the isothermal magnetic field dependence of the relaxation rate, $T_1^{-1}(H)$, displays a concave curve between the two critical fields that bound the TLL regime. This is in sharp contrast to the convex curve previously reported for a strong-rung ladder $mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$. Within the TLL description, we show that the concavity directly reflects the attractive interactions, while the convexity reflects the repulsive ones.
We investigate charge fractionalizations in artificial Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) composed of two capacitively coupled quantum Hall edge channels (ECs) in graphene. The interaction strength of the artificial TLLs can be controlled through dist ance W between the ECs. We show that the fractionalization ratio r and the TLL mode velocity v vary with W. The experimentally obtained relation between v and r follows a unique function predicted by the TLL theory. We also show that charged wavepackets are reflected back and forth multiple times at both ends of the TLL region.
