We present the first N-band nulling plus K- and L-band V2 observations of a young stellar object, MWC325, taken with the 85 m baseline Keck Interferometer. The Keck nuller was designed for the study of faint dust signatures associated with debris disks, but it also has a unique capability for studying the temperature and density distribution of denser disks found around young stellar objects. Interferometric observations of MWC 325 at K, L and N encompass a factor of five in spectral range and thus, especially when spectrally dispersed within each band, enable characterization of the structure of the inner disk regions where planets form. Fitting our observations with geometric models such as a uniform disk or a Gaussian disk show that the apparent size increases monotonically with wavelength in the 2-12 um wavelength region, confirming the widely held assumption based on radiative transfer models, now with spatially resolved measurements over broad wavelength range, that disks are extended with a temperature gradient. The effective size is a factor of about 1.3 and 2 larger in the L-band and N-band, respectively, compared to that in the K-band. The existing interferometric measurements and the spectral energy distribution can be reproduced by a flat disk or a weakly-shadowed nearly flat-disk model, with only slight flaring in the outer regions of the disk, consisting of representative sub-micron (0.1 um) and micron (2 um) grains of a 50:50 ratio of silicate and graphite. This is marked contrast with the disks previously found in other Herbig Ae/Be stars suggesting a wide variety in the disk properties among Herbig Ae/Be stars.

We present spatially-resolved K- and L-band spectra (at spectral resolution R = 230 and R = 60, respectively) of MWC 419, a Herbig Ae/Be star. The data were obtained simultaneously with a new configuration of the 85-m baseline Keck Interferometer. Ou r observations are sensitive to the radial distribution of temperature in the inner region of the disk of MWC 419. We fit the visibility data with both simple geometric and more physical disk models. The geometric models (uniform disk and Gaussian) show that the apparent size increases linearly with wavelength in the 2-4 microns wavelength region, suggesting that the disk is extended with a temperature gradient. A model having a power-law temperature gradient with radius simultaneously fits our interferometric measurements and the spectral energy distribution data from the literature. The slope of the power-law is close to that expected from an optically thick disk. Our spectrally dispersed interferometric measurements include the Br gamma emission line. The measured disk size at and around Br gamma suggests that emitting hydrogen gas is located inside (or within the inner regions) of the dust disk.

The formation and the evolution of protoplanetary disks are important stages in the lifetime of stars. The processes of disk evolution and planet formation are intrinsically linked. We spatially resolve with GRAVITY/VLTI in the K-band the sub au-scal e region of 27 stars to gain statistical understanding of their properties. We look for correlations with stellar parameters, such as luminosity, mass, temperature and age. Our sample also cover a range of various properties in terms of reprocessed flux, flared or flat morphology, and gaps. We developed semi-physical geometrical models to fit our interferometric data. Our best models correspond to smooth and wide rings, implying that wedge-shaped rims at the dust sublimation edge are favored, as found in the H-band. The closure phases are generally non-null with a median value of ~10 deg, indicating spatial asymmetries of the intensity distributions. Multi-size grain populations could explain the closure phase ranges below 20-25 deg but other scenarios should be invoked to explain the largest ones. Our measurements extend the Radius-Luminosity relation to ~1e4 Lsun and confirm the significant spread around the mean relation observed in the H-band. Gapped sources exhibit a large N-to-K band size ratio and large values of this ratio are only observed for the members of our sample that would be older than 1 Ma, less massive, and with lower luminosity. In the 2 Ms mass range, we observe a correlation in the increase of the relative age with the transition from group II to group I, and an increase of the N-to-K size ratio. However, the size of the current sample does not yet permit us to invoke a clear universal evolution mechanism across the HAeBe mass range. The measured locations of the K-band emission suggest that these disks might be structured by forming young planets, rather than by depletion due to EUV, FUV, and X-ray photo-evaporation.

We present the results of 10 micron nulling interferometric observations of 13 Herbig Ae stars using the Magellan I (Baade) and the MMT 6.5 m telescopes. A portion of the observations was completed with the adaptive secondary at the MMT. We have conc lusively spatially resolved 3 of the 13 stars, HD 100546, AB Aur, and HD 179218, the latter two recently resolved using adaptive optics in combination with nulling interferometry. For the resolved objects we find that the 10 $mu$m emitting regions have a spatial extent of 15-30 AU in diameter. We also have some evidence for resolved emission surrounding an additional 2 stars (V892 Tau and R CrA). For those objects in our study with mid-IR SEDs classifications from Meeus et al. (2001), we find that the Group I objects (those with constant to increasing mid-IR flux) are more likely to be resolved, within our limited sample. This trend is evident in correlations in the inferred disk sizes vs. the sub-millimeter SED slope and disk size vs. fractional infrared luminosity of the systems. We explore the spatial distribution and orientation of the warm dust in the resolved systems and constrain physical models which are consistent with their observational signatures.
PDS 144 is a pair of Herbig Ae stars that are separated by 5.35 on the sky. It has previously been shown to have an A2Ve Herbig Ae star viewed at 83circ inclination as its northern member and an A5Ve Herbig Ae star as its southern member. Direct imag ery revealed a disk occulting PDS 144 N - the first edge-on disk observed around a Herbig Ae star. The lack of an obvious disk in direct imagery suggested PDS 144 S might be viewed face-on or not physically associated with PDS 144 N. Multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope imagery of PDS 144 with a 5 year baseline demonstrates PDS 144 N & S are comoving and have a common proper motion with TYC 6782-878-1. TYC 6782-878-1 has previously been identified as a member of Upper Sco sub-association A at d = 145 pm 2 pc with an age of 5-10 Myr. Ground-based imagery reveals jets and a string of Herbig-Haro knots extending 13 (possibly further) which are aligned to within 7circ pm 6circ on the sky. By combining proper motion data and the absence of a dark mid-plane with radial velocity data, we measure the inclination of PDS 144 S to be i = 73circ pm 7circ. The radial velocity of the jets from PDS 144 N & S indicates they, and therefore their disks, are misaligned by 25circ pm 9circ. This degree of misalignment is similar to that seen in T Tauri wide binaries.
MOST observations and model analysis of the Herbig Ae star HD 34282 (V1366 Ori) reveal {delta}-Scuti pulsations. 22 frequencies are observed, 10 of which confirm those previously identified by Amado et al. (2006), and 12 of which are newly discovered in this work. We show that the weighted-average frequency in each group fits the radial p-mode frequencies of viable models. We argue that the observed pulsation spectrum extends just to the edge to the acoustic cut-off frequency and show that this also is consistent with our best-fitting models.
