Graphene has a multitude of striking properties that make it an exceedingly attractive material for various applications, many of which will emerge over the next decade. However, one of the most promising applications lie in exploiting its peculiar electronic properties which are governed by its electrons obeying a linear dispersion relation. This leads to the observation of half integer quantum hall effect and the absence of localization. The latter is attractive for graphene-based field effect transistors. However, if graphene is to be the material for future electronics, then significant hurdles need to be surmounted, namely, it needs to be mass produced in an economically viable manner and be of high crystalline quality with no or virtually no defects or grains boundaries. Moreover, it will need to be processable with atomic precision. Hence, the future of graphene as a material for electronic based devices will depend heavily on our ability to piece graphene together as a single crystal and define its edges with atomic precision. In this progress report, the properties of graphene that make it so attractive as a material for electronics is introduced to the reader. The focus then centers on current synthesis strategies for graphene and their weaknesses in terms of electronics applications are highlighted.

Traditional origami structures can be continuously deformed back to a flat sheet of paper, while traditional kirigami requires glue or seams in order to maintain its rigidity. In the former, non-trivial geometry can be created through overfolding pap er while, in the latter, the paper topology is modified. Here we propose a hybrid approach that relies upon overlapped flaps that create in-plane compression resulting in the formation of virtual elastic shells. Not only are these structures self-supporting, but they have colossal load-to-weight ratios of order 10000.
Because of its fascinating electronic properties, graphene is expected to produce breakthroughs in many areas of nanoelectronics. For spintronics, its key advantage is the expected long spin lifetime, combined with its large electron velocity. In thi s article, we review recent theoretical and experimental results showing that graphene could be the long-awaited platform for spintronics. A critical parameter for both characterization and devices is the resistance of the contact between the electrodes and the graphene, which must be large enough to prevent quenching of the induced spin polarization but small enough to allow for the detection of this polarization. Spin diffusion lengths in the 100-{mu}m range, much longer than those in conventional metals and semiconductors, have been observed. This could be a unique advantage for several concepts of spintronic devices, particularly for the implementation of complex architectures or logic circuits in which information is coded by pure spin currents.
The stability of two-dimensional (2D) layers and membranes is subject of a long standing theoretical debate. According to the so called Mermin-Wagner theorem, long wavelength fluctuations destroy the long-range order for 2D crystals. Similarly, 2D me mbranes embedded in a 3D space have a tendency to be crumpled. These dangerous fluctuations can, however, be suppressed by anharmonic coupling between bending and stretching modes making that a two-dimensional membrane can exist but should present strong height fluctuations. The discovery of graphene, the first truly 2D crystal and the recent experimental observation of ripples in freely hanging graphene makes these issues especially important. Beside the academic interest, understanding the mechanisms of stability of graphene is crucial for understanding electronic transport in this material that is attracting so much interest for its unusual Dirac spectrum and electronic properties. Here we address the nature of these height fluctuations by means of straightforward atomistic Monte Carlo simulations based on a very accurate many-body interatomic potential for carbon. We find that ripples spontaneously appear due to thermal fluctuations with a size distribution peaked around 70 AA which is compatible with experimental findings (50-100 AA) but not with the current understanding of stability of flexible membranes. This unexpected result seems to be due to the multiplicity of chemical bonding in carbon.
In this work, high field carrier transport in two dimensional (2D) graphene is investigated. Analytical models are applied to estimate the saturation currents in graphene, based on the high scattering rate of optical phonon emission. Non-equilibrium (hot) phonon effect was studied by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. MC simulation confirms that hot phonon effects play a dominant role in current saturation in graphene. Current degradation due to elastic scattering events is much smaller compared to the hot phonon effect. Transient phenomenon as such as velocity overshoot was also studied using MC simulation. The simulation results shows promising potential for graphene to be used in high speed electronic devices by shrinking the channel length below 100nm if electrostatic control can be exercised in the absence of a band gap.

We investigated experimentally the high-temperature electrical resistance of graphene interconnects. The test structures were fabricated using the focused ion beam from the single and bi-layer graphene produced by mechanical exfoliation. It was found that as temperature increases from 300 to 500K the resistance of the single- and bi-layer graphene interconnects drops down by 30% and 70%, respectively. The quenching and temperature dependence of the resistance were explained by the thermal generation of the electron-hole pairs and acoustic phonon scattering. The obtained results are important for the proposed applications of graphene as interconnects in integrated circuits.
