The unique capabilities of capacitance measurements in bilayer graphene enable probing of layer-specific properties that are normally out of reach in transport measurements. Furthermore, capacitance measurements in the top-gate and penetration field geometries are sensitive to different physical quantities: the penetration field capacitance probes the two layers equally, whereas the top gate capacitance preferentially samples the near layer, resulting in the near-layer capacitance enhancement effect observed in recent top-gate capacitance measurements. We present a detailed theoretical description of this effect and show that capacitance can be used to determine the equilibrium layer polarization, a potentially useful tool in the study of broken symmetry states in graphene.

The quantum Hall effect is a remarkable manifestation of quantized transport in a two-dimensional electron gas. Given its technological relevance, it is important to understand its development in realistic nanoscale devices. In this work we present h ow the appearance of different edge channels in a field-effect device is influenced by the inhomogeneous capacitance profile existing near the sample edges, a condition of particular relevance for graphene. We apply this practical idea to experiments on high quality graphene, demonstrating the potential of quantum Hall transport as a spatially resolved probe of density profiles near the edge of this two-dimensional electron gas.

We report a symmetry resolved electronic Raman scattering (ERS) study of a bilayer graphene device under gate voltage. We show that the ERS continuum is dominated by interband chiral excitations of $A_{2}$ symmetry and displays a characteristic Pauli -blocking behavior similar to the monolayer case. Crucially, we show that non-chiral excitations make a vanishing contribution to the Raman cross-section due to destructive interference effects in the Raman amplitude matrix elements. This is in a marked contrast to optical absorption measurements and opens interesting venues for the use of Raman scattering as a selective probe of chiral degrees of freedom in topological matter and other 2D crystals.
Moire materials, and in particular twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), exhibit a range of fascinating phenomena, that emerge from the interplay of band topology and interactions. We show that the non-linear second-order photoresponse is an appealing prob e of this rich interplay. A dominant part of the photoresponse is the shift-current, which is determined by the geometry of the electronic wavefunctions and carrier properties, and thus becomes strongly modified by electron-electron interactions. We analyze its dependence on the twist angle and doping, and investigate the role of interactions. In the absence of interactions, the response of the system is dictated by two energy scales: the mean energy of direct transitions between the hole and electron flat bands, and the gap between flat and dispersive bands. Including electron-electron interactions, both enhance the response at the non-interacting characteristic frequencies as well as produce new resonances. We attribute these changes to the filling-dependent band renormalization in TBG. Our results highlight the connection between non-trivial geometric properties of TBG and its optical response, as well as demonstrate how optical probes can access the role of interactions in moire materials.
We explore the dependence of electrical transport in a graphene field effect transistor (GraFET) on the flow of the liquid within the immediate vicinity of that transistor. We find large and reproducible shifts in the charge neutrality point of GraFE Ts that are dependent on the fluid velocity and the ionic concentration. We show that these shifts are consistent with the variation of the local electrochemical potential of the liquid next to graphene that are caused by the fluid flow (streaming potential). Furthermore, we utilize the sensitivity of electrical transport in GraFETs to the parameters of the fluid flow to demonstrate graphene-based mass flow and ionic concentration sensing. We successfully detect a flow as small as~70nL/min, and detect a change in the ionic concentration as small as ~40nM.

We report on low-temperature transport study of a single layer graphene (SLG)-twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) junction device. The SLG-tBLG junction in the device is grown by chemical vapor deposition and the device is fabricated in a Hall-bar config uration on Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. The longitudinal resistances across the SLG-tBLG junction (cross-junction resistances) on the two sides of the Hall bar and the Hall resistances of SLG and tBLG in the device are measured. In the quantum Hall regime, the measurements show that the measured cross-junction resistances exhibit a series of new quantized plateaus and the appearance of these resistance plateaus can be attributed to the presence of the well-defined edge-channel transport along the SLG-tBLG junction interface. The measurements also show that the difference between the cross-junction resistances measured on the two sides of the Hall-bar provides a sensitive measure to the edge channel transport characteristics in the two graphene layers that constitute the SLG-tBLG junction and to degeneracy lifting of the Landau levels in the tBLG layer. Temperature dependent measurements of the cross-junction resistance in the quantum Hall regime are also carried out and the influence of the transverse transport of the bulk Landau levels on the edge channel transport along the SLG-tBLG junction interface are extracted. These results enrich the understanding of the charge transport across interfaces in graphene hybrid structures and open up new opportunities for probing exotic quantum phenomena in graphene devices.
