We investigate an extended version of the quantum Ising model which includes beyond-nearest neighbour interactions and an additional site-dependent longitudinal magnetic field. Treating the interaction exactly and using perturbation theory in the longitudinal field, we calculate the energy spectrum and find that the presence of beyond-nearest-neighbour interactions enhances the minimal gap between the ground state and the first excited state, irrespective of the nature of decay of these interactions along the chain. The longitudinal field adds a correction to this gap that is independent of the number of qubits. We discuss the application of our model to implementing specific instances of 3-satisfiability problems (Exact Cover) and make a connection to a chain of flux qubits.

Originating in questions regarding work extraction from quantum systems coupled to a heat bath, quantum deficit, a kind of quantum correlations besides entanglement and quantum discord, links quantum thermodynamics with quantum correlations. In this paper, we evaluate the one-way deficit of two adjacent spins in the bulk for the $XY$ model and its extend model: the extended Ising model. We find that the one-way deficit susceptibility is able to characterize the quantum phase transitions in the $XY$ model and even the topological phase transitions in the extend Ising model. This study may enlighten extensive studies of quantum phase transitions from the perspective of quantum information processing and quantum computation, including finite-temperature phase transitions, topological phase transitions and dynamical phase transitions of a variety of quantum many-body systems.
We benchmark the quantum processing units of the largest quantum annealers to date, the 5000+ qubit quantum annealer Advantage and its 2000+ qubit predecessor D-Wave 2000Q, using tail assignment and exact cover problems from aircraft scheduling scena rios. The benchmark set contains small, intermediate, and large problems with both sparsely connected and almost fully connected instances. We find that Advantage outperforms D-Wave 2000Q for almost all problems, with a notable increase in success rate and problem size. In particular, Advantage is also able to solve the largest problems with 120 logical qubits that D-Wave 2000Q cannot solve anymore. Furthermore, problems that can still be solved by D-Wave 2000Q are solved faster by Advantage. We find that D-Wave 2000Q can only achieve better success rates for a few very sparsely connected problems.
We investigate quantum phase transitions, quantum criticality, and Berry phase for the ground state of an ensemble of non-interacting two-level atoms embedded in a non-linear optical medium, coupled to a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field. T he optical medium is pumped externally through a classical electric field, so that there is a degenerate parametric amplification effect, which strongly modifies the field dynamics without affecting the atomic sector. Through a semiclassical description the different phases of this extended Dicke model are described. The quantum phase transition is characterized with the expectation values of some observables of the system as well as the Berry phase and its first derivative, where such quantities serve as order parameters. It is remarkable that the model allows the control of the quantum criticality through a suitable choice of the parameters of the non-linear optical medium, which could make possible the use of a low intensity laser to access the superradiant region experimentally.
Extended Thermodynamics is a very important theory: for example, it predicts hyperbolicity, finite speeds of propagation waves as well as continuous dependence on initial data. Therefore, it constitutes a significative improvement of ordinary thermod ynamics. Here its methods are applied to the case of an arbitrary, but fixed, number of moments. The kinetic approach has already been developed in literature; then, the macroscopic approach is here considered and the constitutive functions appearing in the balance equations are determined up to whatever order with respect to thermodynamical equilibrium. The results of the kinetic approach are a particular case of the present ones.
The Dicke-Ising model describes cavity quantum electrodynamics setups in which dipoles couple not only with the photonic cavity field but also to each other through dipole-dipole interaction. In this work we diagonalise such a model in terms of boson ic polaritonic operators for arbitrarily large values of the light-matter coupling and for values of the dipole-dipole interaction until the onset of the ferromagnetic Ising phase transition. In order to accomplish this task we exploit higher order terms of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, developing a general method which allows to solve the normal phase of the Ising model in term of bosonic excitations for large values of the dipole-dipole interaction. Our results shed light on the interplay between the dipole-dipole and the light-matter coupling strengths, and their effect on the virtual excitations which populate the ground-state when the interactions become comparable with the bare transition frequency.
