Oxides containing iridium ions display a range of magnetic and conducting properties that depend on the delicate balance between interactions and are controlled, at least in part, by the details of the crystal architecture. We have used muon-spin rotation ($mu$SR) to study the local field in four iridium oxides, Ca$_4$IrO$_6$, Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which show contrasting behavior. Our $mu$SR data on Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ and Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ are consistent with conventional antiferromagnetism where quasistatic magnetic order develops below $T_{rm N}=13.85(6)$ K and 7.84(7) K respectively. A lower internal field is observed for Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, as compared to Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ reflecting the presence of both Ir$^{4+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ ions, resulting in a more magnetically dilute structure. Muon precession is only observed over a restricted range of temperature in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, while the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ displays more complex behavior, with the $mu$SR signal containing a single, well-resolved precession signal below $T_{rm N}=230$,K, which splits into two precession signals at low temperature following a reorientation of the spins in the ordered state.

The effect of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO$_2$ layers is readily modified upon compre ssion, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17-20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between $mathrm{J_{eff}}=1/2$ magnetic moments within the insulating IrO$_2$ layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended $5d$ orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.
Through a neutron scattering, charge transport, and magnetization study, the correlated ground state in the bilayer iridium oxide Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is explored. Our combined results resolve scattering consistent with a high temperature magnetic phase that persists above 600 K, reorients at the previously defined $T_{AF}=280$ K, and coexists with an electronic ground state whose phase behavior suggests the formation of a fluctuating charge or orbital phase that freezes below $T^{*}approx70$ K. Our study provides a window into the emergence of multiple electronic order parameters near the boundary of the metal to insulator phase transition of the 5d $J_{eff}=1/2$ Mott phase.
X-ray magnetic critical scattering measurements and specific heat measurements were performed on the perovskite iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We find that the magnetic interactions close to the N{e}el temperature $T_N$ = 283.4(2) K are three-dimensional . This contrasts with previous studies which suggest two-dimensional behaviour like Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Violation of the Harris criterion ($d u>2$) means that weak disorder becomes relevant. This leads a rounding of the antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N$, and modifies the critical exponents relative to the clean system. Specifically, we determine that the critical behaviour of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is representative of the diluted 3D Ising universality class.
We show that, contrary to previous belief, the transition to the antiferromagnetic state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ in zero magnetic field does show up in the transverse resistivity. We attribute this to a change in transverse integrals associated to the magne tic ordering, which is evaluated considering hopping of the localized charge. The evolution of the resistivity anomaly associated to the magnetic transition under applied magnetic field is studied. It tracks the magnetic phase diagram, allowing to identify three different lines, notably the spin-flip line, associated with the reordering of the ferromagnetic component of the magnetization, and an intriguing line for field induced magnetism, also corroborated by magnetization measurements.

We present a combined oxygen $K$-egde x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the bilayer ruthenate Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Our RIXS experiments on Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ were carried out on the overlapping i n-plane and inner apical oxygen resonances, which are distinguishable from the outer apical one. Comparison to equivalent oxygen $K$-edge spectra recorded on band-Mott insulating Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ is made. In contrast to Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ spectra, which contain excitations linked to Mott physics, Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ spectra feature only intra-$t_{2g}$ ones that do not directly involve the Coulomb energy scale. As found in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, we resolve two intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Moreover, the lowest lying excitation in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ shows a significant dispersion, revealing a collective character differently from what is observed in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$. Theoretical modelling supports the interpretation of this lowest energy excitation in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ as a magnetic transverse mode with multi-particle character, whereas the corresponding excitation in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ is assigned to combined longitudinal and transverse spin modes. These fundamental differences are discussed in terms of the inequivalent magnetic ground-state manifestations in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ and Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$.
