Near band gap photoluminescence (PL) of hBN single crystal has been studied at cryogenic temperatures with synchrotron radiation excitation. The PL signal is dominated by the D-series previously assigned to excitons trapped on structural defects. A much weaker S-series of self-trapped excitons at 5.778 eV and 5.804 eV has been observed using time-window PL technique. The S-series excitation spectrum shows a strong peak at 6.02 eV, assigned to free exciton absorption. Complementary photoconductivity and PL measurements set the band gap transition energy to 6.4 eV and the Frenkel exciton binding energy larger than 380 meV.

We combine linear and non-linear optical spectroscopy at 4K with ab initio calculations to study the electronic bandstructure of MoSe2 monolayers. In 1-photon photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and reflectivity we measure a separation between the A- and B-exciton emission of 220 meV. In 2-photon PLE we detect for the A- and B-exciton the 2p state 180meV above the respective 1s state. In second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy we record an enhancement by more than 2 orders of magnitude of the SHG signal at resonances of the charged exciton and the 1s and 2p neutral A- and B-exciton. Our post-Density Functional Theory calculations show in the conduction band along the $K-Gamma$ direction a local minimum that is energetically and in k-space close to the global minimum at the K-point. This has a potentially strong impact on the polarization and energy of the excitonic states that govern the interband transitions and marks an important difference to MoS2 and WSe2 monolayers.
Ca2Co2O5 in the brownmillerite form was synthesized using a high-pressure optical-image floating zone furnace, and single crystals with dimensions up to 1.4x0.8x0.5 mm3 were obtained. At room temperature, Ca2Co2O5 crystallizes as a fully ordered brow nmillerite variant in the orthorhombic space group Pcmb (No. 57) with unit cell parameters a=5.28960(10) {AA}, b=14.9240(2) {AA}, and c=10.9547(2) {AA}. With decreasing temperature, it undergoes a re-entrant sequence of first-order structural phase transitions (Pcmb to P2/c11 to P121/m1 to Pcmb) that is unprecedented among brownmillerites, broadening the family of space groups available to these materials and challenging current approaches for sorting the myriad variants of brownmillerite structures. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate antiferromagnetic ordering in Ca2Co2O5 occurs near 240 K, corroborated by neutron powder diffraction. Below 140 K, the specimen exhibits a weak ferromagnetic component directed primarily along the b axis that shows a pronounced thermal and magnetic history dependence.

Polarized superradiant emission and exciton delocalization in tetracene single crystals are reported. Polarization-, time-, and temperature-resolved spectroscopy evidence the complete polarization of the zero-phonon line of the intrinsic tetracene em ission from both the lower (F state) and the upper (thermally activated) Davydov excitons. The superradiance of the F emission is substantiated by a nearly linear decrease of the radiative lifetime with temperature, being fifteen times shorter at 30 K compared to the isolated molecule, with an exciton delocalization of about 40 molecules.

We present resistivity, specific heat and magnetization measurements in high quality single crystals of HoBi, with a residual resistivity ratio of 126. We find, from the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization, an antiferromagnetic tran sition at 5.7 K, which evolves, under magnetic fields, into a series of up to five metamagnetic phases.
In this paper, the magnetic and transport properties were systematically studied for EuAg$_4$As$_2$ single crystals, crystallizing in a centrosymmetric trigonal CaCu$_4$P$_2$ type structure. It was confirmed that two magnetic transitions occur at $te xtit{T}$$_{N1}$ = 10 K and $textit{T}$$_{N2}$ = 15 K, respectively. With the increasing field, the two transitions are noticeably driven to lower temperature. At low temperatures, applying a magnetic field in the $textit{ab}$ plane induces two successive metamagnetic transitions. For both $textit{H}$ $parallel$ $textit{ab}$ and $textit{H}$ $parallel$ $textit{c}$, EuAg$_4$As$_2$ shows a positive, unexpected large magnetoresistance (up to 202%) at low fields below 10 K, and a large negative magnetoresistance (up to -78%) at high fields/intermediate temperatures. Such anomalous field dependence of magnetoresistance may have potential application in the future magnetic sensors. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams of EuAg$_{4}$As$_{2}$ were constructed for both $textit{H}$ $parallel$ $textit{ab}$ and $textit{H}$ $parallel$ $textit{c}$.
