All-sky data from the Planck survey and the Meta-Catalogue of X-ray detected Clusters of galaxies (MCXC) are combined to investigate the relationship between the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal and X-ray luminosity. The sample comprises ~ 1600 X-ray clusters with redshifts up to ~ 1 and spans a wide range in X-ray luminosity. The SZ signal is extracted for each object individually, and the statistical significance of the measurement is maximised by averaging the SZ signal in bins of X-ray luminosity, total mass, or redshift. The SZ signal is detected at very high significance over more than two decades in X-ray luminosity (10^43 erg/s < L_500 E(z)^-7/3 < 2 X 10^45 erg/s). The relation between intrinsic SZ signal and X-ray luminosity is investigated and the measured SZ signal is compared to values predicted from X-ray data. Planck measurements and X-ray based predictions are found to be in excellent agreement over the whole explored luminosity range. No significant deviation from standard evolution of the scaling relations is detected. For the first time the intrinsic scatter in the scaling relation between SZ signal and X-ray luminosity is measured and found to be consistent with the one in the luminosity -- mass relation from X-ray studies. There is no evidence of any deficit in SZ signal strength in Planck data relative to expectations from the X-ray properties of clusters, underlining the robustness and consistency of our overall view of intra-cluster medium properties.

We present the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal-to-richness scaling relation (Y500-N200) for the MaxBCG cluster catalogue. Employing a multi-frequency matched filter on the Planck sky maps, we measure the SZ signal for each cluster by adapting the filte r according to weak-lensing calibrated mass-richness relations (N200-M500). We bin our individual measurements and detect the SZ signal down to the lowest richness systems (N200=10) with high significance, achieving a detection of the SZ signal in systems with mass as low as M500~5e13 Msolar. The observed Y500-N200 relation is well modeled by a power law over the full richness range. It has a lower normalisation at given N200 than predicted based on X-ray models and published mass-richness relations. An X-ray subsample, however, does conform to the predicted scaling, and model predictions do reproduce the relation between our measured bin-average SZ signal and measured bin-average X-ray luminosities. At fixed richness, we find an intrinsic dispersion in the Y500-N200 relation of 60% rising to of order 100% at low richness. Thanks to its all-sky coverage, Planck provides observations for more than 13,000 MaxBCG clusters and an unprecedented SZ/optical data set, extending the list of known cluster scaling laws to include SZ-optical properties. The data set offers essential clues for models of galaxy formation. Moreover, the lower normalisation of the SZ-mass relation implied by the observed SZ-richness scaling has important consequences for cluster physics and cosmological studies with SZ clusters.
We present precise Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect measurements in the direction of 62 nearby galaxy clusters (z <0.5) detected at high signal-to-noise in the first Planck all-sky dataset. The sample spans approximately a decade in total mass, 10^14 < M_500 < 10^15, where M_500 is the mass corresponding to a total density contrast of 500. Combining these high quality Planck measurements with deep XMM-Newton X-ray data, we investigate the relations between D_A^2 Y_500, the integrated Compton parameter due to the SZ effect, and the X-ray-derived gas mass M_g,500, temperature T_X, luminosity L_X, SZ signal analogue Y_X,500 = M_g,500 * T_X, and total mass M_500. After correction for the effect of selection bias on the scaling relations, we find results that are in excellent agreement with both X-ray predictions and recently-published ground-based data derived from smaller samples. The present data yield an exceptionally robust, high-quality local reference, and illustrate Plancks unique capabilities for all-sky statistical studies of galaxy clusters.

We present scaling relations between the integrated Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE) signal, $Y_{rm SZ}$, its X-ray analogue, $Y_{rm X}equiv M_{rm gas}T_{rm X}$, and total mass, $M_{rm tot}$, for the 45 galaxy clusters in the Bolocam X-ray-SZ (BOXSZ) s ample. All parameters are integrated within $r_{2500}$. $Y_{2500}$ values are measured using SZE data collected with Bolocam, operating at 140 GHz at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). The temperature, $T_{rm X}$, and mass, $M_{rm gas,2500}$, of the intracluster medium are determined using X-ray data collected with Chandra, and $M_{rm tot}$ is derived from $M_{rm gas}$ assuming a constant gas mass fraction. Our analysis accounts for several potential sources of bias, including: selection effects, contamination from radio point sources, and the loss of SZE signal due to noise filtering and beam-smoothing effects. We measure the $Y_{2500}$--$Y_{rm X}$ scaling to have a power-law index of $0.84pm0.07$, and a fractional intrinsic scatter in $Y_{2500}$ of $(21pm7)%$ at fixed $Y_{rm X}$, both of which are consistent with previous analyses. We also measure the scaling between $Y_{2500}$ and $M_{2500}$, finding a power-law index of $1.06pm0.12$ and a fractional intrinsic scatter in $Y_{2500}$ at fixed mass of $(25pm9)%$. While recent SZE scaling relations using X-ray mass proxies have found power-law indices consistent with the self-similar prediction of 5/3, our measurement stands apart by differing from the self-similar prediction by approximately 5$sigma$. Given the good agreement between the measured $Y_{2500}$--$Y_{rm X}$ scalings, much of this discrepancy appears to be caused by differences in the calibration of the X-ray mass proxies adopted for each particular analysis.
Uncertainty in the mass-observable scaling relations is currently the limiting factor for galaxy cluster based cosmology. Weak gravitational lensing can provide a direct mass calibration and reduce the mass uncertainty. We present new ground-based we ak lensing observations of 19 South Pole Telescope (SPT) selected clusters at redshifts $0.29 leq z leq 0.61$ and combine them with previously reported space-based observations of 13 galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.576 leq z leq 1.132$ to constrain the cluster mass scaling relations with the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE), the cluster gas mass mgas, and yx, the product of mgas and X-ray temperature. We extend a previously used framework for the analysis of scaling relations and cosmological constraints obtained from SPT-selected clusters to make use of weak lensing information. We introduce a new approach to estimate the effective average redshift distribution of background galaxies and quantify a number of systematic errors affecting the weak lensing modelling. These errors include a calibration of the bias incurred by fitting a Navarro-Frenk-White profile to the reduced shear using $N$-body simulations. We blind the analysis to avoid confirmation bias. We are able to limit the systematic uncertainties to 5.6% in cluster mass (68% confidence). Our constraints on the mass--X-ray observable scaling relations parameters are consistent with those obtained by earlier studies, and our constraints for the mass--SZE scaling relation are consistent with the simulation-based prior used in the most recent SPT-SZ cosmology analysis. We can now replace the external mass calibration priors used in previous SPT-SZ cosmology studies with a direct, internal calibration obtained on the same clusters.
This is the first of two papers investigating the deprojection and spherical averaging of ellipsoidal galaxy clusters. We specifically consider applications to hydrostatic X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) studies, though many of the results also appl y to isotropic dispersion-supported stellar dynamical systems. Here we present analytical formulas for galaxy clusters described by a gravitational potential that is a triaxial ellipsoid of constant shape and orientation. For this model type we show that the mass bias due to spherically averaging X-ray observations is independent of the temperature profile, and for the special case of a scale-free logarithmic potential, there is exactly zero mass bias for any shape, orientation, and temperature profile. The ratio of spherically averaged intracluster medium (ICM) pressures obtained from SZ and X-ray measurements depends only on the ICM intrinsic shape, projection orientation, and H_0, which provides another illustration of how cluster geometry can be recovered through a combination of X-ray and SZ measurements. We also demonstrate that Y_SZ and Y_X have different biases owing to spherical averaging, which leads to an offset in the spherically averaged Y_SZ - Y_X relation. A potentially useful application of the analytical formulas presented is to assess the error range of an observable (e.g., mass, Y_SZ) accounting for deviations from assumed spherical symmetry, without having to perform the ellipsoidal deprojection explicitly. Finally, for dedicated ellipsoidal studies, we also generalize the spherical onion peeling method to the triaxial case for a given shape and orientation.
