Adiabaticity of quantum evolution is important in many settings. One example is the adiabatic quantum computation. Nevertheless, up to now, there is no effective method to test the adiabaticity of the evolution when the eigenenergies of the driven Hamiltonian are not known. We propose a simple method to check adiabaticity of a quantum process for an arbitrary quantum system. We further propose a operational method for finding a uniformly adiabatic quench scheme based on Kibble-Zurek mechanism for the case when the initial and the final Hamiltonians are given. This method should help in implementing adiabatic quantum computation.

Spin echo can be used to refocus random dynamical phases caused by inhomogeneities in control fields and thereby retain the purity of a spatial distribution of quantum spins. This technique for accurate spin control is an essential ingredient in many applications, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetic resonance imaging, and quantum information processing. Here, we show how all the elements of a spin echo sequence can be performed at high speed by means of shortcuts to adiabaticity. Our proposal promises accurate control of rapid quantum spin evolution. We illustrate our scheme for a universal nonadiabatic geometric single-qubit gate.
The realization of quantum adiabatic dynamics is at the core of implementations of adiabatic quantum computers. One major issue is to efficiently compromise between the long time scales required by the adiabatic protocol and the detrimental effects o f the environment, which set an upper bound to the time scale of the operation. In this work we propose a protocol which achieves fast adiabatic dynamics by coupling the system to an external environment by the means of a quantum-non-demolition (QND) Hamiltonian. We analyse the infidelity of adiabatic transfer for a Landau-Zener problem in the presence of QND measurement, where the qubit couples to a meter which in turn quickly dissipates. We analyse the protocols fidelity as a function of the strength of the QND coupling and of the relaxation time of the meter. In the limit where the decay rate of the ancilla is the largest frequency scale of the dynamics, the QND coupling induces an effective dephasing in the adiabatic basis. Optimal conditions for adiabaticity are found when the coupling with the meter induces dissipative dynamics which suppresses unwanted diabatic transitions.

The future of long-distance quantum communication relies on the availability of quantum memory, i.e. devices that allow temporal storage of quantum information. We review research related to quantum state storage based on a photon-echo approach in rare earth ion doped crystals and glasses.
In this book chapter we review photon echo based schemes for optical quantum memory. We outline the basic principles of the Atomic Frequency Comb (AFC), Gradient Echo Memory (GEM) and Rephased Amplified Spontaneous Emission (RASE) protocols. We descr ibe the properties of the rare-earth ion and gaseous vapours ensembles that have been used to carry out experimental demonstrations. These experiments are then discussed with reference to relevant classical and quantum performance criteria.
Fast and robust quantum control protocols are often based on an idealised approximate description of the relevant quantum system. While this may provide a performance which is close to optimal, improvements can be made by incorporating elements of th e full system representation. We propose a new technique for such scenarios, called enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity (eSTA). The eSTA method works for previously intractable Hamiltonians by providing an analytical correction to existing STA protocols. This correction can be easily calculated and the resulting protocols are outside the class of STA schemes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for three distinct cases: manipulation of an internal atomic state beyond the rotating wave approximation, transport of a neutral atom in an optical Gaussian trap and transport of two trapped ions in an anharmonic trap.
