We assume that the early universe is homogeneous, anisotropic, and is dominated by the mutually BPS 2255 intersecting branes of M theory. The spatial directions are all taken to be toroidal. Using analytical and numerical methods, we study the evolution of such an universe. We find that, asymptotically, three spatial directions expand to infinity and the remaining spatial directions reach stabilised values. Any stabilised values can be obtained by a fine tuning of initial brane densities. We give a physical description of the stabilisation mechanism. Also, from the perspective of four dimensional spacetime, the effective four dimensional Newtons constant G_4 is now time varying. Its time dependence will follow from explicit solutions. We find in the present case that, asymptotically, G_4 exhibits characteristic log periodic oscillations.

A period of slow contraction with equation of state w > 1, known as an ekpyrotic phase, has been shown to flatten and smooth the universe if it begins the phase with small perturbations. In this paper, we explore how robust and powerful the ekpyrotic smoothing mechanism is by beginning with highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic initial conditions and numerically solving for the subsequent evolution of the universe. Our studies, based on a universe with gravity plus a scalar field with a negative exponential potential, show that some regions become homogeneous and isotropic while others exhibit inhomogeneous and anisotropic behavior in which the scalar field behaves like a fluid with w=1. We find that the ekpyrotic smoothing mechanism is robust in the sense that the ratio of the proper volume of the smooth to non-smooth region grows exponentially fast along time slices of constant mean curvature.
We provide ${cal N}=1$ superfield description of BPS backgrounds in six-dimensional supergravity (6D SUGRA) with 3-branes, which is compactified on a two-dimensional space. The brane terms induce the localized fluxes. We find a useful gauge in which the background equations become significantly simple. This is not the Wess-Zumino gauge, and the relation to the usual component-field expression of 6D SUGRA is not straightforward. One of the equations reduces to the Liouville equation. By moving to the Wess-Zumino gauge, we check that our expressions reproduce the known results of the previous works, which are expressed in the component fields. Our results help us develop the systematic derivation of four-dimensional effective theories that keeps the ${cal N}=1$ SUSY structure.
Assuming that superstring theory is the fundamental theory which unifies all forces of Nature at the quantum level, I argue that there are key limitations on the applicability of effective field theory techniques in describing early universe cosmology.

We study the dynamics of a timelike vector field which violates Lorentz invariance when the background spacetime is in an accelerating phase in the early universe. It is shown that a timelike vector field is difficult to realize an inflationary phase , so we investigate the evolution of a vector field within a scalar field driven inflation model. And we calculate the power spectrum of the vector field without considering the metric perturbations. While the time component of the vector field perturbations provides a scale invariant spectrum when $xi = 0$, where $xi$ is a nonminimal coupling parameter, both the longitudinal and transverse perturbations give a scale invariant spectrum when $xi = 1/6$.
We investigate how non-linear scalar field theories respond to point sources. Taking the symmetron as a specific example of such a theory, we solve the non-linear equation of motion in one spatial dimension for (i) an isolated point source and (ii) t wo identical point sources with arbitrary separation. We find that the mass of a single point source can be screened by the symmetron field, provided that its mass is above a critical value. We find that two point sources behave as independent, isolated sources when the separation between them is large, but, when their separation is smaller than the symmetrons Compton wavelength, they behave much like a single point source with the same total mass. Finally, we explore closely related behavior in a toy Higgs-Yukawa model, and find indications that the maximum fermion mass that can be generated consistently via a Yukawa coupling to the Higgs in 1+1 dimensions is roughly the mass of the Higgs itself, with potentially intriguing implications for the hierarchy problem.
