We examine the diffraction properties of lattice dynamical systems of algebraic origin. It is well-known that diverse dynamical properties occur within this class. These include different orders of mixing (or higher-order correlations), the presence or absence of measure rigidity (restrictions on the set of possible shift-invariant ergodic measures to being those of algebraic origin), and different entropy ranks (which may be viewed as the maximal spatial dimension in which the system resembles an i.i.d. process). Despite these differences, it is shown that the resulting diffraction spectra are essentially indistinguishable, thus raising further difficulties for the inverse problem of structure determination from diffraction spectra. Some of them may be resolved on the level of higher-order correlation functions, which we also briefly compare.

We consider metrizable ergodic topological dynamical systems over locally compact, $sigma$-compact abelian groups. We study pure point spectrum via suitable notions of almost periodicity for the points of the dynamical system. More specifically, we c haracterize pure point spectrum via mean almost periodicity of generic points. We then go on and show how Besicovitch almost periodic points determine both eigenfunctions and the measure in this case. After this, we characterize those systems arising from Weyl almost periodic points and use this to characterize weak and Bohr almost periodic systems. Finally, we consider applications to aperiodic order.

The well-known plastic number substitution gives rise to a ternary inflation tiling of the real line whose inflation factor is the smallest Pisot-Vijayaraghavan number. The corresponding dynamical system has pure point spectrum, and the associated co ntrol point sets can be described as regular model sets whose windows in two-dimensional internal space are Rauzy fractals with a complicated structure. Here, we calculate the resulting pure point diffraction measure via a Fourier matrix cocycle, which admits a closed formula for the Fourier transform of the Rauzy fractals, via a rapidly converging infinite product.
Typically, in the dynamical theory of extremal events, the function that gauges the intensity of a phenomenon is assumed to be convex and maximal, or singular, at a single, or at most a finite collection of points in phase--space. In this paper we ge neralize this situation to fractal landscapes, i.e. intensity functions characterized by an uncountable set of singularities, located on a Cantor set. This reveals the dynamical r^ole of classical quantities like the Minkowski dimension and content, whose definition we extend to account for singular continuous invariant measures. We also introduce the concept of extremely rare event, quantified by non--standard Minkowski constants and we study its consequences to extreme value statistics. Limit laws are derived from formal calculations and are verified by numerical experiments.

In this paper, we show that there is a Cantor set of initial conditions in the planar four-body problem such that all four bodies escape to infinity in a finite time, avoiding collisions. This proves the Painlev{e} conjecture for the four-body case, and thus settles the last open case of the conjecture.
We study the topological properties of attractors of Iterated Function Systems (I.F.S.) on the real line, consisting of affine maps of homogeneous contraction ratio. These maps define what we call a second generation I.F.S.: they are uncountably many and the set of their fixed points is a Cantor set. We prove that when this latter either is the attractor of a finite, non-singular, hyperbolic, I.F.S. (of first generation), or it possesses a particular dissection property, the attractor of the second generation I.F.S. consists of finitely many closed intervals.
