Magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phase of CaFe2As2 (T_N=172 K) have been examined by means of inelastic neutron scattering from 180 K (~ 1.05 T_N) up to 300 K (~1.8 T_N). Despite the first-order nature of the magnetic ordering, strong but short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations are clearly observed. These correlations, which consist of quasi-elastic scattering centered at the wavevector Q_{AFM} of the low-temperature AFM structure, are observed up to the highest measured temperature of 300 K and at high energy transfer (E> 60 meV). The L dependence of the scattering implies rather weak interlayer coupling in the tetragonal c-direction corresponding to nearly two-dimensional fluctuations in the (ab) plane. The spin correlation lengths within the Fe layer are found to be anisotropic, consistent with underlying fluctuations of the AFM stripe structure. Similar to the cobalt doped superconducting BaFe2As2 compounds, these experimental features can be adequately reproduced by a scattering model that describes short-range anisotropic spin correlations with overdamped spin dynamics.

In this work, fabrication and characterization of magnetic properties of EuFe2As2 and EuRbFe4As4 single crystals is reported. Magnetization measurements of samples with well defined thin film geometry and crystal orientation demonstrate a striking si milarity in ferromagnetic properties of Eu subsystems in these two compounds. Measurements with magnetic field applied along ab crystal planes reveal meta-magnetic transition in both compounds. Numerical studies employing the Jz1-Jz2 Heisenberg model suggest that the ground state of the magnetic order in Eu subsystem for both compounds is the helical spin order with the helical angle about 2pi/5, while the meta-magnetic transition is the helix-to-fan first order phase transition.
The effects of pressure generated in a liquid medium, clamp, pressure cell on the in-plane and c-axis resistance, temperature-dependent Hall coefficient and low temperature, magnetoresistance in CaFe2As2 are presented. The T - P phase diagram, includ ing the observation of a complete superconducting transition in resistivity, delineated in earlier studies is found to be highly reproducible. The Hall resistivity and low temperature magnetoresistance are sensitive to different states/phases observed in CaFe2As2. Auxiliary measurements under uniaxial, c-axis, pressure are in general agreement with the liquid medium clamp cell results with some difference in critical pressure values and pressure derivatives. The data may be viewed as supporting the potential importance of non-hydrostatic components of pressure in inducing superconductivity in CaFe2As2.
Single crystals of the compound LaFePO were prepared using a flux growth technique at high temperatures. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal metallic behavior and a resistive transition to the superconducting state at a critical temperature T_ c ~ 6.6 K. Magnetization measurements also show the onset of superconductivity near 6 K. In contrast, specific heat measurements manifest no discontinuity at T_c. These results lend support to the conclusion that the superconductivity is associated with oxygen vacancies that alter the carrier concentration in a small fraction of the sample, although superconductivity characterized by an unusually small gap value can not be ruled-out. Under applied magnetic fields, T_c is suppressed anisotropically for fields perpendicular and parallel to the ab-plane, suggesting that the crystalline anisotropy strongly influences the superconducting state. Preliminary high-pressure measurements show that T_c passes through a maximum of nearly 14 K at ~ 110 kbar, demonstrating that significantly higher T_c values may be achieved in the phosphorus-based oxypnictides.
The density functional non-interacting susceptibility has been analyzed in different phases of CaFe2As2 and compared with similar data for pure d-metals. The conditions for the no local moment itinerant state with large frustrations are found for the collapsed phase (corresponding to superconducting phase). This itineracy determines the instability versus the incommensurate magnetic order for the narrow region of wave vectors. For the ambient pressure phase, the local moments on Fe atoms with much less frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions are stabilized and a magnetic short or long range order for all wave vectors is developed.
The structural properties of the CaFe2As2 have been investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques as a function of temperature. Unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for coexistence of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases below 1 70 K in contrast to existing literature. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show that the sample does not transform completely in to the orthorhombic phase at the lowest temperature even though it is the majority phase. We have found that the unit cell volume of the orthorhombic phase is higher compared to that of the tetragonal phase for all the temperatures. X-ray data on CaFe2As2 shows anomalous (at) lattice parameter contraction with increasing temperature and phase co-existence behavior below 170 K unlike other members of the 122 family of compounds like SrFe2As2 and EuFe2As2. Temperature dependent magnetization of polycrystalline CaFe2As2 sample show weak anomalies below 170 K. This behavior of the polycrystalline sample is in contrast to that of a single crystal reported earlier.
