The density functional non-interacting susceptibility has been analyzed in different phases of CaFe2As2 and compared with similar data for pure d-metals. The conditions for the no local moment itinerant state with large frustrations are found for the collapsed phase (corresponding to superconducting phase). This itineracy determines the instability versus the incommensurate magnetic order for the narrow region of wave vectors. For the ambient pressure phase, the local moments on Fe atoms with much less frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions are stabilized and a magnetic short or long range order for all wave vectors is developed.

Neutron diffraction measurements of a high quality single crystal of CaFe2As2 are reported. A sharp transition was observed between the high temperature tetragonal and low temperature orthorhombic structures at TS = 172.5K (on cooling) and 173.5K (on warming). Coincident with the structural transition we observe a rapid, but continuous, ordering of the Fe moments, in a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure is observed, with a saturated moment of 0.80(5)muB/Fe directed along the orthorhombic a-axis. The hysteresis of the structural transition is 1K between cooling and warming and is consistent with previous thermodynamic, transport and single crystal x-ray studies. The temperature onset of magnetic ordering shifts rigidly with the structural transition providing the clearest evidence to date of the coupling between the structural and magnetic transitions in this material and the broader class of iron arsenides.
Nematic orders emerge nearly universally in iron-based superconductors, but elucidating their origins is challenging because of intimate couplings between orbital and magnetic fluctuations. The iron-based ladder material BaFe2S3, which superconducts under pressure, exhibits antiferromagnetic order below TN ~ 117K and a weak resistivity anomaly at T* ~ 180K, whose nature remains elusive. Here we report angle-resolved magnetoresistance (MR) and elastoresistance (ER) measurements in BaFe2S3, which reveal distinct changes at T*. We find that MR anisotropy and ER nematic response are both suppressed near T*, implying that an orbital order promoting isotropic electronic states is stabilized at T*. Such an isotropic state below T* competes with the antiferromagnetic order, which is evidenced by the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of nematic fluctuations. In contrast to the cooperative nematic orders in spin and orbital channels in iron pnictides, the present competing orders can provide a new platform to identify the separate roles of orbital and magnetic fluctuations.
Neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in single crystals of antiferromagnetic CaFe2As2 reveal steeply dispersive and well-defined spin waves up to an energy of 100 meV. Magnetic excitations above 100 meV and up to the maximum en ergy of 200 meV are however broader in energy and momentum than the experimental resolution. While the low energy modes can be fit to a Heisenberg model, the total spectrum cannot be described as arising from excitations of a local moment system. Ab-initio calculations of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility suggest that the high energy behavior is dominated by the damping of spin waves by particle-hole excitations.
Magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phase of CaFe2As2 (T_N=172 K) have been examined by means of inelastic neutron scattering from 180 K (~ 1.05 T_N) up to 300 K (~1.8 T_N). Despite the first-order nature of the magnetic ordering, strong but sh ort-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations are clearly observed. These correlations, which consist of quasi-elastic scattering centered at the wavevector Q_{AFM} of the low-temperature AFM structure, are observed up to the highest measured temperature of 300 K and at high energy transfer (E> 60 meV). The L dependence of the scattering implies rather weak interlayer coupling in the tetragonal c-direction corresponding to nearly two-dimensional fluctuations in the (ab) plane. The spin correlation lengths within the Fe layer are found to be anisotropic, consistent with underlying fluctuations of the AFM stripe structure. Similar to the cobalt doped superconducting BaFe2As2 compounds, these experimental features can be adequately reproduced by a scattering model that describes short-range anisotropic spin correlations with overdamped spin dynamics.
The structural properties of the CaFe2As2 have been investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques as a function of temperature. Unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for coexistence of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases below 1 70 K in contrast to existing literature. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show that the sample does not transform completely in to the orthorhombic phase at the lowest temperature even though it is the majority phase. We have found that the unit cell volume of the orthorhombic phase is higher compared to that of the tetragonal phase for all the temperatures. X-ray data on CaFe2As2 shows anomalous (at) lattice parameter contraction with increasing temperature and phase co-existence behavior below 170 K unlike other members of the 122 family of compounds like SrFe2As2 and EuFe2As2. Temperature dependent magnetization of polycrystalline CaFe2As2 sample show weak anomalies below 170 K. This behavior of the polycrystalline sample is in contrast to that of a single crystal reported earlier.
