We study interfaces between graphene and graphane. If the interface is oriented along a zigzag direction, edge states are found which exhibit a strong amplification of effects related to the spin-orbit interaction. The enhanced spin splitting of the edge states allows a conversion between valley polarization and spin polarization at temperatures near one Kelvin. We show that these edge states give rise to quantum spin and/or valley Hall effects.

We study the magnetic properties of graphene edges and graphene/graphane interfaces under the influence of electrostatic gates. For this, an effective low-energy theory for the edge states, which is derived from the Hubbard model of the honeycomb lat tice, is used. We first study the edge state model in a mean-field approximation for the Hubbard Hamiltonian and show that it reproduces the results of the extended 2D lattice theory. Quantum fluctuations around the mean-field theory of the effective one-dimensional model are treated by means of the bosonization technique in order to check the stability of the mean-field solution. We find that edge magnetism at graphene/graphane interfaces can be switched on and off by means of electrostatic gates. We describe a quantum phase transition between an ordinary and a ferromagnetic Luttinger liquid - a realization of itinerant one-dimensional ferromagnetism. This mechanism may provide means to experimentally discriminate between edge magnetism or disorder as the reason for a transport gap in very clean graphene nanoribbons.
We study a model of a $p$-$n$ junction in single-layer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and spin-orbit interactions. By solving the relevant quantum-mechanical problem for a potential step, we determine the exact spectrum of spin-resolved dispersive Landau levels. Close to zero energy, we find a pair of linearly dispersing zero modes, which possess a wave-vector-dependent spin polarization and can be regarded as quantum analogous of spinful snake states. We show that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, in particular, produces a wave vector shift between the dispersions of these modes with observable interference effects. These effects can in principle provide a way to detect the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction and measure its strength. Our results suggest that a graphene $p$-$n$ junction in the presence of strong spin-orbit interaction could be used as a building block in a spin field-effect transistor.
We study graphene which has both spin-orbit coupling (SOC), taken to be of the Kane-Mele form, and a Zeeman field induced due to proximity to a ferromagnetic material. We show that a zigzag interface of graphene having SOC with its pristine counterpa rt hosts robust chiral edge modes in spite of the gapless nature of the pristine graphene; such modes do not occur for armchair interfaces. Next we study the change in the local density of states (LDOS) due to the presence of an impurity in graphene with SOC and Zeeman field, and demonstrate that the Fourier transform of the LDOS close to the Dirac points can act as a measure of the strength of the spin-orbit coupling; in addition, for a specific distribution of impurity atoms, the LDOS is controlled by a destructive interference effect of graphene electrons which is a direct consequence of their Dirac nature. Finally, we study transport across junctions which separates spin-orbit coupled graphene with Kane-Mele and Rashba terms from pristine graphene both in the presence and absence of a Zeeman field. We demonstrate that such junctions are generally spin active, namely, they can rotate the spin so that an incident electron which is spin polarized along some direction has a finite probability of being transmitted with the opposite spin. This leads to a finite, electrically controllable, spin current in such graphene junctions. We discuss possible experiments which can probe our theoretical predictions.
The quasi-two-dimensional electron gas found at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface offers exciting new functionalities, such as tunable superconductivity, and has been proposed as a new nanoelectronics fabrication platform. Here we lay out a new example of an electronic property arising from the interfacial breaking of inversion symmetry, namely a large Rashba spin-orbit interaction, whose magnitude can be modulated by the application of an external electric field. By means of magnetotransport experiments we explore the evolution of the spin-orbit coupling across the phase diagram of the system. We uncover a steep rise in Rashba interaction occurring around the doping level where a quantum critical point separates the insulating and superconducting ground states of the system.
Introduction of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) into graphene with weak hydrogenation ($sim$0.1%) by dissociation of hydrogen silsesquioxane resist has been confirmed through the appearance of inverse spin Hall effect. The spin current was produced by s pin injection from permalloy electrodes excluding non-spin relating experimental artifact.
