We investigate the properties of an atmospheric channel for free space quantum communication with continuous polarization variables. In our prepare-and-measure setup, coherent polarization states are transmitted through an atmospheric quantum channel of 100m length on the roof of our institutes building. The signal states are measured by homodyne detection with the help of a local oscillator (LO) which propagates in the same spatial mode as the signal, orthogonally polarized to it. Thus the interference of signal and LO is excellent and atmospheric fluctuations are autocompensated. The LO also acts as spatial and spectral filter, which allows for unrestrained daylight operation. Important characteristics for our system are atmospheric channel influences that could cause polarization, intensity and position excess noise. Therefore we study these influences in detail. Our results indicate that the channel is suitable for our quantum communication system in most weather conditions.

Quantum communications using continuous variables are quite mature experimental techniques and the relevant theories have been extensively investigated with various methods. In this paper, we study the continuous variable quantum channels from a diff erent angle, i.e., by exploring master equations. And we finally give explicitly the capacity of the channel we are studying. By the end of this paper, we derive the criterion for the optimal capacities of the Gaussian channel versus its fidelity.
We investigate estimation of fluctuating channels and its effect on security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution. We propose a novel estimation scheme which is based on the clusterization of the estimated transmittance data. We show that uncertainty about whether the transmittance is fixed or not results in a lower key rate. However, if the total number of measurements is large, one can obtain using our method a key rate similar to the non-fluctuating channel even for highly fluctuating channels. We also verify our theoretical assumptions using experimental data from an atmospheric quantum channel. Our method is therefore promising for secure quantum communication over strongly fluctuating turbulent atmospheric channels.
Integrated quantum photonics provides a scalable platform for the generation, manipulation, and detection of optical quantum states by confining light inside miniaturized waveguide circuits. Here we show the generation, manipulation, and interferomet ric stage of homodyne detection of non-classical light on a single device, a key step towards a fully integrated approach to quantum information with continuous variables. We use a dynamically reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide network to generate and characterize squeezed vacuum and two-mode entangled states, key resources for several quantum communication and computing protocols. We measure a squeezing level of -1.38+-0.04 dB and demonstrate entanglement by verifying an inseparability criterion I=0.77+-0.02<1. Our platform can implement all the processes required for optical quantum technology and its high nonlinearity and fast reconfigurability makes it ideal for the realization of quantum computation with time encoded continuous variable cluster states.
Optical telecommunication is at the heart of todays internet and is currently enabled by the transmission of intense optical signals between remote locations. As we look to the future of telecommunication, quantum mechanics promise new ways to be abl e to transmit and process that information. Demonstrations of quantum key distribution and quantum teleportation using multi-photon states have been performed, but only over ranges limited to one hundred kilometers. To go beyond this, we need repeaters that are compatible with these quantum multi-photon continuous variables pulses. Here we present a design for a continuous variable quantum repeaters that can distribute entangled and pure two-mode squeezed states over arbitrarily long distances with a success probability that scales only polynomially with distance. The proposed quantum repeater is composed from several basic known building blocks such as non-Gaussian operations for entanglement distillation and an iterative Gaussification protocol (for retaining the Gaussian character of the final state), but complemented with a heralded non-Gaussian entanglement swapping protocol, which allows us to avoid extensive iterations of quantum Gaussification. We characterize the performance of this scheme in terms of key rates for quantum key distribution and show a secure key can be generated over thousands of kilometers.
Quantum information protocols are inevitably affected by decoherence which is associated with the leakage of quantum information into an environment. In this paper we address the possibility of recovering the quantum information from an environmental measurement. We investigate continuous variable quantum information, and we propose a simple environmental measurement that under certain circumstances fully restores the quantum information of the signal state although the state is not reconstructed with unit fidelity. We implement the protocol for which information is encoded into conjugate quadratures of coherent states of light and the noise added under the decoherence process is of Gaussian nature. The correction protocol is tested using both a deterministic as well as a probabilistic strategy. The potential use of the protocol in a continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme as a means to combat excess noise is also investigated.
