We have investigated spin and carrier dynamics of resident holes in high-mobility two-dimensional hole systems in GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As single quantum wells at temperatures down to 400 mK. Time-resolved Faraday and Kerr rotation, as well as time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy are utilized in our study. We observe long-lived hole spin dynamics that are strongly temperature dependent, indicating that in-plane localization is crucial for hole spin coherence. By applying a gate voltage, we are able to tune the observed hole g factor by more than 50 percent. Calculations of the hole g tensor as a function of the applied bias show excellent agreement with our experimental findings.

For the realisation of scalable solid-state quantum-bit systems, spins in semiconductor quantum dots are promising candidates. A key requirement for quantum logic operations is a sufficiently long coherence time of the spin system. Recently, hole spi ns in III-V-based quantum dots were discussed as alternatives to electron spins, since the hole spin, in contrast to the electron spin, is not affected by contact hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spins. Here, we report a breakthrough in the spin coherence times of hole ensembles, confined in so called natural quantum dots, in narrow GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells at temperatures below 500 mK. Consistently, time-resolved Faraday rotation and resonant spin amplification techniques deliver hole-spin coherence times, which approach in the low magnetic field limit values above 70 ns. The optical initialisation of the hole spin polarisation, as well as the interconnected electron and hole spin dynamics in our samples are well reproduced using a rate equation model.
A hallmark of topological superconductivity is the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana bound states (MBS), its chargeless zero-energy emergent quasiparticles. The resulting fractionalization of a single electron, stored nonlocally as a two spatially s eparated MBS, provides a powerful platform for implementing fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. However, despite intensive efforts, experimental support for MBS remains indirect and does not probe their non-Abelian statistics. Here we propose how to overcome this obstacle in mini-gate controlled planar Josephson junctions (JJ) and demonstrate non-Abelian statistics through MBS fusion, detected by charge sensing using a quantum point contact. The feasibility of preparing, manipulating, and fusing MBS in two-dimensional (2D) systems is supported in our experiments which demonstrate the control of superconducting properties with five mini gates in InAs/Al-based JJs. While we focus on this well-established platform, where the topological superconductivity was already experimentally detected, our proposal to identify elusive non-Abelian statistics motivates also further MBS studies in other gate-controlled 2D systems.
Semiconductor holes with strong spin-orbit coupling allow all-electrical spin control, with broad applications ranging from spintronics to quantum computation. Using a two-dimensional hole system in a GaAs quantum well, we demonstrate a new mechanism of electrically controlling the Zeeman splitting, which is achieved through altering the hole wave vector $k$. We find a threefold enhancement of the in-plane $g-$factor $g_{parallel}(k)$. We introduce a new method for quantifying the Zeeman splitting from magnetoresistance measurements, since the conventional tilted field approach fails for two-dimensional systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. Finally, we show that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction suppresses the in-plane Zeeman interaction at low magnetic fields. The ability to control the Zeeman splitting with electric fields opens up new possibilities for future quantum spin-based devices, manipulating non-Abelian geometric phases, and realising Majorana systems in $p-$type superconductor systems.

We have calculated the exchange-energy contribution to the total energy of quasi-two-dimensional hole systems realized by a hard-wall quantum-well confinement of valence-band states in typical semiconductors. The magnitude of the exchange energy turn s out to be suppressed from the value expected for analogous conduction-band systems whenever the mixing between heavy-hole and light-hole components is strong. Our results are obtained using a very general formalism for calculating the exchange energy of many-particle systems where single-particle states are spinors. We have applied this formalism to obtain analytical results for spin-3/2 hole systems in limiting cases.

Tellurium (Te) has attracted great research interest due to its unique crystal structure since 1970s. However, the conduction band of Te is rarely studied experimentally because of the intrinsic p-type nature of Te crystal. By atomic layer deposited dielectric doping technique, we are able to access the conduction band transport properties of Te in a controlled fashion. In this paper, we report on a systematic study of weak-antilocalization (WAL) effect in n-type two-dimensional (2D) Te films. We find that the WAL agrees well with Iordanskii, Lyanda-Geller, and Pikus (ILP) theory. The gate and temperature dependent WAL reveals that Dyakonov-Perel (DP) mechanism is dominant for spin relaxation and phase relaxation is governed by electron-electron (e-e) interaction. Large phase coherence length near 600nm at T=1K is obtained, together with gate tunable spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Transition from weak-localization (WL) to weak-antilocalization (WAL) depending on gate bias is also observed. These results demonstrate that newly developed solution-based synthesized Te films provide a new controllable strong SOI 2D semiconductor with high potential for spintronic applications.
