Imperfect channel state information degrades the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications; its effect on single-user (SU) and multi-user (MU) MIMO transmissions are quite different. In particular, MU-MIMO suffers from residual inter-user interference due to imperfect channel state information while SU-MIMO only suffers from a power loss. This paper compares the throughput loss of both SU and MU MIMO on the downlink due to delay and channel quantization. Accurate closed-form approximations are derived for the achievable rates for both SU and MU MIMO. It is shown that SU-MIMO is relatively robust to delayed and quantized channel information, while MU MIMO with zero-forcing precoding loses spatial multiplexing gain with a fixed delay or fixed codebook size. Based on derived achievable rates, a mode switching algorithm is proposed that switches between SU and MU MIMO modes to improve the spectral efficiency, based on the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the normalized Doppler frequency, and the channel quantization codebook size. The operating regions for SU and MU modes with different delays and codebook sizes are determined, which can be used to select the preferred mode. It is shown that the MU mode is active only when the normalized Doppler frequency is very small and the codebook size is large.

Integer-forcing (IF) precoding, also known as downlink IF, is a promising new approach for communication over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels. Inspired by the integer-forcing linear receiver for multiple-access channels, it g eneralizes linear precoding by inducing an effective channel matrix that is approximately integer, rather than approximately identity. Combined with lattice encoding and a pre-inversion of the channel matrix at the transmitter, the scheme has the potential to outperform any linear precoding scheme, despite enjoying similar low complexity. In this paper, a specific IF precoding scheme, called diagonally-scaled exact IF (DIF), is proposed and shown to achieve maximum spatial multiplexing gain. For the special case of two receivers, in the high SNR regime, an optimal choice of parameters is derived analytically, leading to an almost closed-form expression for the achievable sum rate. In particular, it is shown that the gap to the sum capacity is upper bounded by 0.27 bits for any channel realization. For general SNR, a regularized version of DIF (RDIF) is proposed. Numerical results for two receivers under Rayleigh fading show that RDIF can achieve performance superior to optimal linear precoding and very close to the sum capacity.
We consider the problem of channel estimation for uplink multiuser massive MIMO systems, where, in order to significantly reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are used at the base station (BS) to quantize the received signal. Channel estimation for one-bit massive MIMO systems is challenging due to the severe distortion caused by the coarse quantization. It was shown in previous studies that an extremely long training sequence is required to attain an acceptable performance. In this paper, we study the problem of optimal one-bit quantization design for channel estimation in one-bit massive MIMO systems. Our analysis reveals that, if the quantization thresholds are optimally devised, using one-bit ADCs can achieve an estimation error close to (with an increase by a factor of $pi/2$) that of an ideal estimator which has access to the unquantized data. The optimal quantization thresholds, however, are dependent on the unknown channel parameters. To cope with this difficulty, we propose an adaptive quantization (AQ) approach in which the thresholds are adaptively adjusted in a way such that the thresholds converge to the optimal thresholds, and a random quantization (RQ) scheme which randomly generate a set of nonidentical thresholds based on some statistical prior knowledge of the channel. Simulation results show that, our proposed AQ and RQ schemes, owing to their wisely devised thresholds, present a significant performance improvement over the conventional fixed quantization scheme that uses a fixed (typically zero) threshold, and meanwhile achieve a substantial training overhead reduction for channel estimation. In particular, even with a moderate number of pilot symbols (about 5 times the number of users), the AQ scheme can provide an achievable rate close to that of the perfect channel state information (CSI) case.
The relay broadcast channel (RBC) is considered, in which a transmitter communicates with two receivers with the assistance of a relay. Based on different degradation orders among the relay and the receivers outputs, three types of physically degrade d RBCs (PDRBCs) are introduced. Inner bounds and outer bounds are derived on the capacity region of the presented three types. The bounds are tight for two types of PDRBCs: 1) one receivers output is a degraded form of the other receivers output, and the relays output is a degraded form of the weaker receivers output; 2) one receivers output is a degraded form of the relays output, and the other receivers output is a degraded form of the relays output. For the Gaussian PDRBC, the bounds match, i.e., establish its capacity region.
The identification (ID) capacity region of the two-receiver broadcast channel (BC) is shown to be the set of rate-pairs for which, for some distribution on the channel input, each receivers ID rate does not exceed the mutual information between the c hannel input and the channel output that it observes. Moreover, the capacity regions interior is achieved by codes with deterministic encoders. The results are obtained under the average-error criterion, which requires that each receiver reliably identify its message whenever the message intended for the other receiver is drawn at random. They hold also for channels whose transmission capacity region is to-date unknown. Key to the proof is a new ID code construction for the single-user channel. Extensions to the BC with one-sided feedback and the three-receiver BC are also discussed: inner bounds on their ID capacity regions are obtained, and those are shown to be in some cases tight.
Channel-state-information (CSI) feedback methods are considered, especially for massive or very large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To extract essential information from the CSI without redundancy that arises from the highly co rrelated antennas, a receiver transforms (sparsifies) a correlated CSI vector to an uncorrelated sparse CSI vector by using a Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) matrix that consists of the eigen vectors of covariance matrix of CSI vector and feeds back the essential components of the sparse CSI, i.e., a principal component analysis method. A transmitter then recovers the original CSI through the inverse transformation of the feedback vector. Herein, to obtain the covariance matrix at transceiver, we derive analytically the covariance matrix of spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels based on its statistics including transmit antennas and receive antennas correlation matrices, channel variance, and channel delay profile. With the knowledge of the channel statistics, the transceiver can readily obtain the covariance matrix and KLT matrix. Compression feedback error and bit-error-rate performance of the proposed method are analyzed. Numerical results verify that the proposed method is promising, which reduces significantly the feedback overhead of the massive-MIMO systems with marginal performance degradation from full-CSI feedback (e.g., feedback amount reduction by 80%, i.e., 1/5 of original CSI, with spectral efficiency reduction by only 2%). Furthermore, we show numerically that, for a given limited feedback amount, we can find the optimal number of transmit antennas to achieve the largest spectral efficiency, which is a new design framework.
